I was looking for the Tokina, but I couldn't find a place to try it. I finally broke down and bought the Nikon, and I'm not looking back. The lens beautifully exaggerates perspective at its wide end, but so would any 12-24. The distortion is complex and hard to correct after the fact, but unless you're taking pictures of a horizon, it won't bother you unless you let it. Or, you could buy DxO. It is leaps and bounds ahead of the Sigma and Tameron that try to compete with it. I never did get a chance to try the Tokina, but after using this lens, I'm not sure I care about the extra money. I would absolutely buy it again and the first lens I'm going to buy when I can afford an FX camera is either going to be a 17-35 or 18-35 to duplicate this range. Seriously, this and the 18-200mm VR are all you need for a DX camera, perhaps with a 35 or 50 prime for really late night shooting.

I needed a wide angle lens for landscape photography, and read some good things about this lens. I couldn't afford the $1000 price tag, so I opted for a used lens with an E+ rating. I have to say I couldn't be happier! It looks and feels like a brand new lens (with minor scratches on the lens cap, but that doesn't affect photo quality so no big deal). This is more of a review on buying used lenses. E+ and above is pretty much brand new quality for WAY less money!!! I'm not hesitant to buy used lenses from Adorama anymore! :) Super happy with this lens!

Bought it used from Adorama with a Tiffen UV filter for around $Au699 (including shipping to Australia). It was a toss-up between the Nikon 12-24 and 10-24 (and the Tokina 11-16) but ended up going with the 12-24 after lots and lots of web research. Lens was described as in demo condition - and that was an accurate description. In really good shape. Ordered Tuesday afternoon, turned up Friday morning...from New York to Australia! Gotta love the Internet! The 18-105 that came with my D7000 is a nice lens but not quite wide enough. The 12-24 is a useful addition, particularly for travel and landscapes.
It looks and works like brand new, and I saved over $600.
Used for product photography
I recently entered the digital photo world after decades of extensive film equipment experience (elaborate 35mm and medium format systems). I recently used this lens with a Nikon D90 to take photos at the Hill Air Force Base Aerospace Museum. I adjusted the ISO to 1600, because of the low light, and fired away. The performance of this lens was spectacular (color rendition, low distortion, sharp as a tack, fast focusing, and excellent zoom range). I studied all available product reviews about lenses of this type. This lens was always rated above the others and my experience with the lens supports this view. It's perfect for the wide-angle photography environment that I operate in. If you're considering this lens, don't hesitate to buy.
I picked this up used - much cheaper the newer, said-to-be-better 10-24mm. Haven't really compared with [*] 10-24, but my Nikon are all made in either Japan or Thailand and I didn't want to change it now. Since DX body is just my spare body, I would not use this so extensively anyway. I am totally happy.
This is a very high quality wide zoom. It has good sharpness and the advantage of a consistent wide aperture. Being a wide only zoom however does limit it's usefulness. Make sure you really need a wide only zoom before buying. My "bread and butter" lens is the Nikon 16-85/3.5-5.6 zoom. This lens is very close my ideal lens and goes with me everywhere.
I'm a Realtor and bought this lens to shoot the interior of homes for myself and other Realtors. Also, works well on exteriors where there's no way to grab the shot with another lens. Internal focus, minimum distortion (easily corrected in seconds with software), great optics for catching details. Worth every penny I spent. It's paid for itself very quickly. Also great for creative and fun shots with that incredible depth of field. Heavy of course, lots of glass, professional quality DX lens.
This is an excellent lens for DSLR video, especially in a situation where depth of field is a plus. It is sharp from edge to edge and provides a wide view without serious barrel distortion. It's also a fine lens for making stills in tight quarters on a DX body. The light weight balances well on a d300s or d7000 body. The faster 14~28 f 2.8 lens is better suited for the heavier D3.
