Think twice before buying this lens.

First of all, this lens is probably not for you -- well, maybe a few of you. But not if you've never used wide-angles before. And I don't mean 28mm -- i mean 20mm at least. If you haven't at least tried a super wide angle lens before, use some common sense and try a demo first. The reason is that this lens, at 14mm, is mind-blowingly good -- but in a way very few people understand. "What's the point of that lens?" is the most common question people will ask you (and you'll ask it to yourself as well, as it sits in your bag, unused). I'm rating it a 4, because its not as sharp as advertised on the websites. It has decent sharpness. But the sharpness is hype. This is a quality zoom in a weird range. Maybe Kent Rockwell loves this lens -- but even he warns you to put your money into the 17-35mm instead. The 17-35mm looks nearly as good and takes filters. The 14-24 is unprotected. Its a huge bulb of bloated glass sitting out in the open that seems like it weighs more than my camera, because of how you have to hold this lens. And 24-14mm is usually not very useful, because it makes people look fat, and makes things look VERY VERY far away, unless you take the pic a foot away from them (literally). This lens is not for you, unless you know what ULTRA wideangles are, and you are ready to go to SUPER ultra wide angle. Its flawed in that it doesn't focus closer than 12 inches. If you buy it, youll know why (the fun is when things nearly touch a wideangle lens). Think twice. Then buy it, because its about the funnest and most artistic lens you can have that's not zany like a fisheye. This lens is NOT for portraits in the classical sense. Buy it only if you know you can tame it. Worse part: The lens cover is cheap plastic that does not stay on, and it constantly falls off, constantly threatening your valuable glass (and the lens doesn't take filters!). Best part: Best in its class.

It doesn't perform as well on subjects at infinity as I would like but for what it is it's quite good. It doesn't take filters but the contrast & saturation are so high I don't think it's as big a deal as people make it out. It's heavy so keep that in mind if you're using it on a heavy body with an on camera flash. The construction is solid and the focus & zoom rings are smooth. It's moving almost 1KG of glass so it's a given that there's a bit of resistance in the zoom ring compared to the focus ring. It's probably the smoothest "full time manual focus" ring I've ever experienced. The lens element is very exposed so I leave the lens cap on at all times and take it off to take a picture. I might relax a bit more and "let go" later but for now it makes me nervous. Dust on the front element WILL show up in the shot. This camera is unforgiving in that aspect. The chromatic aberration is manageable. Usually it doesn't need correction. There's barrel distortion on the wide end. Used on a D300. Waiting for my pre-ordered D800 to come in. The reason this lens gets 3 stars is because there's a serious "double vision" problem for out of focus elements. On the D300 small details are rendered twice if they're out of focus, about 3-4 pixels apart. Things like telephone wires in the distance, little leaves, etc. Having to stop down the lens extra to mitigate this defeats the purpose of having such a sharp lens. I really wish this issue didn't happen. For those interested I'm comparing this lens to the following that I've used: Zeiss 35mm T* 2.0 Distagon (on full frame), voigtlander 21mm color skopar F4 (on 35mm film and aps-c sony nex), Schneider Super Angulon F8 on 4x5 film

Full of high expectations from great reviews I was disappointed. I get better results with my Nikon 18-35. The focal length is so broad with the 14-24, I don't get the fine detail that I get with my 18-35. Of course this Nikon 14-24 is an old tech lens compared to the Nikon 18-35. The 18-35 has the ability to add filters, and seems to me to be Nikons upgrade to the 14-24.
Purchased this lens to use on the d810. Very fast and happy with the overall result.
I use this lens for real-estate photography. The wide angle makes it ideal for capturing rooms. The bulbous lens prevents me from adding a standard filter, but so far filters haven't proven necessary for my uses. If I ever need a filter, several third-party attachment systems exist (though pricey). Don't buy this as a "walking around" lens. If you aren't paying very close attention to distortions, you can get some pretty wonky photos. However, when you need the wide angle, this lens performs beautifully.
I bought this lens for real estate photography, and it's great! Wide angles but straight vertical lines.Fast and sharp.Ideal with my full-frame D750 for architecture. At first I was worried about not being able to fit a filter, but that hasn't been an issue for my work.
This is one of my go-to lenses- it is fast, tack-sharp and covers wide angles well.
Needs more than 5 stars! This lens is even better than i expected. after getting it in the mail i took it out for a test run taking pictures of my backyard, plants up close wide open and stopped down. and when it got dark i tried it out on the stars with my d700. it picked up alot of detail even with a town and city near by plus a moon out! i couldnt imaging what it would pick up if i was in a dark area! Its tack sharp and has excellent contrast and color! i specifically bought this lens for astro photography, land, cityscape, cramped areas and whatever else i can think of to use it for. id say the only complaint i have about it is it tends to have an easy tendency to get sun flares at 14 to 18mm from the sides of the lens. this is due to how the lens was made with the massive glass bulb on the end. this is normal, any lens this wide would be a sun flare magnet. to avoid this either have your back to the sun or make sure something is blocking the sun or have the sun centered with your photo. other that that its just a wow lens! remember to stop down to around f8 or higher with this lens to have sharp corners cause this is an ultra wide lens! i recommend this lens!

Sharp, fast, also tells other nikon users to look at me!!!! haha. Great lens, especially for compact places where you don't get to maneuver, and for seances. It does get a bit heavy with my D4.
I've been a Nikon owner and admirer for years. This is a terrific lens in all respects. It has no competition.
Below is a photo of a 340 foot long "box" truss I recently erected for an airplane hangar in Arizona. With limited foreground in which to work, this ultra wide angle zoom lens allowed me to get close to the structure, capture it all, and with no noticeable distortion. The image was taken at a shutter speed of 1/320th of a second, an aperture of f/9, an ISO of 100, a focal length of 14mm, Auto White Balance, and Matrix exposure metering.
