Great effect - Great lens

I am amazed every time I use this lens. I keep this lens tucked in my bag for almost every outing. Sometimes I find myself surrounded by closed in spaces or an area that has converging lines. This is when I bring this lens out it makes these spaces open up and provide a spectacular effect. The lens is a fish eye so straight lines curve and with a tillt of the lens will add drama to the photo. This lens is sharp and easy to use. The small light lens makes it a welcome addition to any camera bag...

Another excellent Nikkor lens

By

from South Carolina, USA

This has become a very important lens to me since I bought it. When I travel light, and that is most of the time I go with two lenses. My 28-300 and this 16mm 2.8 FE. I use the D700 and I have printed 30x40 prints using this lens, I am nuts about it. When you use Nikon capture NX2 to can straighten the FE lines for the widest wide angle lens available. If you want a new perspective you have it with this lens. It is very simply part of my photography.

Stadium and Starting Line Lens Requirement

By

from San Diego, California

Since the advent of the full frame FX sensor, the Nikon 16mm "fisheye" lens has been resurrected. The two photos below were taken with a Nikon D700 camera body. Resolution is excellent and depth of field is infinite, even at large apertures. The stadium photo and bike race photo were taken with the following respective settings: shutter speed of 1/800 of a second--1/200 of a second, aperture of f/7.1--f/5.6, ISO of 200--200, Auto White Balance--Auto White Balance, and Matrix Metering--Matrix Metering.

Fifty Year Wait

By

from Washington, USA

I've wanted a Fisheye for fifty years when I had my first Nikon, a Nikkorex-F. I've had this lens now for over a year and have had so much fun using it with my D800E, as it opens so many opportunities for creative perspective. Unlike the original Fisheye with a circular image, this Fisheye completely fills the FX frame and does so with outstanding sharpness. If you are careful with composition, lines can be controlled in a very reasonable manner. Images produced with this lens are truly unique. This truly is an outstanding Nikkor lens and is fast becoming one of my favorites. One criticism for Nikon though is the terrible front lens cap that is so easily dislodged. Nikon can do far better in redesigning this front lens cap.

Wonderful lens

By

from Fairbanks, AK

I purcahsed this lens mainly to shoot the Aurora Borealis but find my self using it for many other applications. The lens is tack sharp and works well for shooting groups indoors. There are several software packages that allow you to flatten the image it you do not like the "fish eye" look. The only complaint I have with the 16mm is the lens cap which does not fit well and you will loose it if you do not take some measure not to. I use a couple of small pieces of gaffers tape to keep it in place. It would be nice if Nikon would fix this.

Hey good lookin

By

from Pasadena, CA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This lens has an amazing quality. Pros: 1)Very creative shots 2)Lightweight lens 3)Very clear shots Cons: 1)Short length of lens w/ lack of a real hood and no way to mount one, creates the perfect storm for flash flare. If you use a diffuser on your flash you will get flare into your lens. My work around is to use my hand as a shield as if I were trying to keep out the sun. 2)There is no way to protect the lens from scratching. There is no filter mount and no way to attach a larger hood. One scratch and the lens could be ruined. 3)The lens cap is way too loose. Simple gravity will take this cap right off of the lens. Plus the replacement cap is $40. I would really give this lens 4.6 stars if I could. The fantastic optics more than make up for the cons I listed above. The creative look and feel of my shots has taken my photography to another level. Love this little lens.

I use this lens for a very specific interior photography process and it performs to the highest standards that I expected. It has extremely consistent output and is a jewel to work with.

Q&A

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
ALAN R  Basically a very nice, compact fisheye lens with all of the characteristics of a fisheye, able to create mind-warping images.
Shopper  can a FX lens be used on a DX camera?
THOMAS J  Yes. It is very common to use a FX lens on a DX camera. However, the effective focal length will be larger and the resulting field of view will be smaller. Thus, for example, a fisheye lens will produce less of a fisheye effect since the smaller DX image sensor is only seeing the center of the FX lens image.
Shopper  How do the gel filters for this lens attach?
GUY E  Filters are attached behind the rear element. Typical high quality Nikon fit.
