Very nice lens. A step up from the 18-70 ED DX. The VR works well. The lens is as sharp at f5.6 at 85 mm as it is at f8 by my preliminary tests. Slightly longer and heavier than the 18-70, and gets even longer when zoomed to 85mm. Very tight, solid zoom ring with a nice sturdy feel to it. Absolutely no lens creep. AF-S focusing is a dream on the D300. If you don't mind the slower speed, this is a great walk around lens. Overpriced for what you get, but so is the 70-300 VR. Also, you absolutel...

Also, you absolutely have to use the lens hood outdoors.

Not as sharp as 18-105 which is half the

The 18-105 is much sharper in the center. I tested 5 16-85 lenses and 2 18-105. Yes corner to corner the 16-85 i sharper but the center to me is much more important than the edges. Much more.

This lens is not about the numbers.

from San Jose, CA  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This might just be the most overlooked lens in Nikon's DX line-up. When shopping around, I saw a lot of criticism online for the lack of zoom range and high price. This lens is not about the numbers, but all about image quality while offering a zoom range that covers 90% of what most of us actually need. It's also weather sealed, well built, and focuses fast. True, it won't do shallow DOF and it is a bit heavy, but get yourself a prime to satisfy those needs and you'll have a great setup. The attached images are screenshots showing comparisons between the output of this lens vs my two favorite primes. These are at a 100% crop at the corner of RAW images straight out of my D7000 with all auto-corrections disabled. Judge for yourself, but I find the resolution and lack of CAs to be beyond my expectations for a zoom of this type.

Very useful

from Wildomar, CA  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

I find myself shooting with this lens about 80~90% of the time.Lightweight and practical.

Beyond expectations

from Wildomar, CA.  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

I am an amateur photographer and use this lens about once or twice a week. I am very happy with the results that I get, Clear, sharp pictures with outstanding color. Has a solid Nikon feel to it.

Sharp, crisp photos

from Michigan  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

Use for landscapes, group photos. Photos are sharp and clear. The lens is heavier than the 18-55mm kit lens but in my opinion the photo quality is worth carrying the extra weight. My lens is mounted on a D7000 and I am enjoying the quality photos I'm able to create.

Fantastic Travel Lens!

from Minnesota  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

Easy to use. One lens travel solution with my D90.

Great everyday lens!!!

from Washington  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This is a great everyday lens and has been on my camera since I purchased it. The 16mm on the wide end gives you just that little bit extra. The only reason I wouldn't give this five stars is that nothing is really perfect but this lens is close for that knock around lens that you can shoot just about anything with.

Nokon lens are hard to beat

from Radford Va.  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This lens is very sharp and covers the range I needed for my work. But the only thing is Adorama Done a very Sorry job in the way they package and sent this expensive lens. Very poor job.

Great Kit lens

from Wisconsin  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

A great lens, a solid upgrade from the standard 18-55. The lens is noticeably wider, has much sturdier build quality, and zooms and focuses great! Its sharp for all the uses I have for it. Certainly not professional, but professionals will buy a faster piece of glass anyway. A great fit on the D7000-they go great together! A fantastic walk around lens.

Great IQ zoom

from VT  -  Semi-Professional

I first purchased the 18-105 VR and wasn't very impressed with the quality. I returned it and got this and am very happy with the quality for the price. The build & image quality is better than the 18-105mm. On my D5200 the quality rivals my Canon 5D Mark II with 24-105 L lens. For the price this is a superb lens!

Questions about this item:

j s  do you have this lens used?
TOM H  Perhaps. It is barely used. How much are you looking to spend?
j s  Tom, I only have around $400 to spend on a lens if you are interested.
D. K  Which lens would be more recommended overall, if the extra length isn't super important......the 16-85 or the 18-140? I have a D7100.
JOHN S  I have the Nikon 16-85 that I use on a D7000 and D300. This is the primary zoom that I use on my DX cameras even though I also have the Nikon 18-200 and Nikon 17-55 2.8. The 16mm wide end is very handy for me, and it’s much smaller and lighter. Optically it’s as good if not better than the others. I don’t have the Nikon 18-140 but it is clearly built to a lower price point than the Nikon 16-85, but it is also a newer design. Overall the advantages of the 16-85 over the 18-140 would be the wider wide end, and higher quality more durable construction. The 18-140 is longer and cheaper. Optically they’re both excellent.
Shopper  does the serial # on this lens begin with, " US" ?
JIM D  Yes it does.
