I love this lens!

I ordered this as a lens kit. It's always nice to have a few cleaning supplies in a nice litte zippered case to toss in the camera bag. I love this lens! This will probably become my daily use lens. I ordered this as a lens kit. It's always nice to have a few cleaning supplies in a nice litte zippered case to toss in the camera bag. I love this lens! This will probably become my daily use lens. Even though you might think this lens is not fast, it far outshined my expectations. On a recent trip to Moab Utah, I was forced to shoot through the windshield of the car or out the side window. The only challenge was timing shots out the side window between bushes flying by. VR was set to active and wham, pow! Beautiful performance and great pictures to boot. The VR makes this lens seem very fast. Barely pushed the shutter button and it was focused. I took an 18-135mm along and never even got it out of the bag. My polarizing filter fell apart (but I've had it for a long time) so I ended up getting a Vivitar CPL, which is not a wideangle filter, because it was the only size filter available at the very small camera store in town; yet, I had no problem with vignetting in any of the shots. I got consistent shots whether we were flying down the road at 70 mph or standing still. I really don't do flash photography and haven't had the chance to try the lens out in low light or no flash situations, but I have a 50mm for those times. This is a great little lens and that extra 2mm over my 18-135 is a lot of fun, believe it or not.

This lens is not about the numbers.

By

from San Jose, CA  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This might just be the most overlooked lens in Nikon's DX line-up. When shopping around, I saw a lot of criticism online for the lack of zoom range and high price. This lens is not about the numbers, but all about image quality while offering a zoom range that covers 90% of what most of us actually need. It's also weather sealed, well built, and focuses fast. True, it won't do shallow DOF and it is a bit heavy, but get yourself a prime to satisfy those needs and you'll have a great setup. The attached images are screenshots showing comparisons between the output of this lens vs my two favorite primes. These are at a 100% crop at the corner of RAW images straight out of my D7000 with all auto-corrections disabled. Judge for yourself, but I find the resolution and lack of CAs to be beyond my expectations for a zoom of this type.

Sharp, crisp photos

By

from Michigan  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

Use for landscapes, group photos. Photos are sharp and clear. The lens is heavier than the 18-55mm kit lens but in my opinion the photo quality is worth carrying the extra weight. My lens is mounted on a D7000 and I am enjoying the quality photos I'm able to create.

Great everyday lens!!!

By

from Washington  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This is a great everyday lens and has been on my camera since I purchased it. The 16mm on the wide end gives you just that little bit extra. The only reason I wouldn't give this five stars is that nothing is really perfect but this lens is close for that knock around lens that you can shoot just about anything with.

Nokon lens are hard to beat

By

from Radford Va.  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This lens is very sharp and covers the range I needed for my work. But the only thing is Adorama Done a very Sorry job in the way they package and sent this expensive lens. Very poor job.

Great Kit lens

By

from Wisconsin  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

A great lens, a solid upgrade from the standard 18-55. The lens is noticeably wider, has much sturdier build quality, and zooms and focuses great! Its sharp for all the uses I have for it. Certainly not professional, but professionals will buy a faster piece of glass anyway. A great fit on the D7000-they go great together! A fantastic walk around lens.

Great IQ zoom

By

from VT  -  Semi-Professional

I first purchased the 18-105 VR and wasn't very impressed with the quality. I returned it and got this and am very happy with the quality for the price. The build & image quality is better than the 18-105mm. On my D5200 the quality rivals my Canon 5D Mark II with 24-105 L lens. For the price this is a superb lens!

Questions about this item:

Barb M  I have a Nikon D3100 with the kit lens. Will this lens work on my camera and will it be a better lens for me? I was looking for a wide angle lens and then I saw this and am now wondering if maybe I should go this way, wouldn't have to change my lens.
JANICE H  Hello Barb, Your D3100 will work with this lens since it is AF-S DX (auto focus is built into the lens). This is the walk-about lens for my camera because it does just about everything except macro and extreme telephoto. You will enjoy the wide range of options this lens will provide, plus the convenience of not having to carry additional equipment. This lens provides you with that grab-n-go luxury for your day-to-day needs. I do recommend getting one other accessory, the 67mm polarizing filter, which is also available through Adorama. For additional information, check the nikonusa website under the Learn and Explore section. There you will find an excellent reference article called "Which NIKKOR Lens Type is Right for Your D-SLR." Also check the specifications page for the D3100, which will show a section on "Compatible Lenses." Best regards, Jan
