About Nikon 18-200mm

This Nikon 18-200mm Bundle comes with $14.90 worth of free accessories including a Vivitar 3-Piece 72mm UV/CPL/ND Filter Kit and Shipping is free! .

New ultra-high ratio zoom lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II for use expressly with Nikon DX-format digital-SLR cameras.

A number of unique Nikon technologies have been developed for, and applied to, including a high zoom magnification of 11.1x, a Vibration Reductiaon (VR II) image stabilization system that provides camera shake compensation equivalent to increases in shutter speed by four stops, and a Silent Wave Motor (SWM), as well as a zoom lock switch. Designed expressly for use with Nikon digital-SLR cameras, exceptional image performance is assured.

As the compact AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II covers an extremely wide range of focal lengths (18-200mm, equivalent to 27-300mm in 35mm format; a zoom magnification of 11.1x), it offers excellent versatility for various scenes that include portraits and landscapes. The addition of a zoom lock switch allows photographers to secure the lens barrel at its minimum length, eliminating the natural gravitational effect that can draw the barrel downward during transport.

This lens offers superior optical performance in a compact size of just 77 x 96.5 mm, despite a high zoom magnification of 11.1x. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) assures fast and quiet autofocusing.

The Vibration Reduction system (VR II) provides camera shake compensation equivalent to increases in shutter speed by four steps. Two Vibration Reduction modes are available.

NORMAL VR mode: Reduces ordinary camera shake. Panning is also supported.

ACTIVE VR mode: Reduces extreme camera shake, such as that which occurs when shooting from a moving vehicle.

Optics, optimized for use with digital-SLR cameras, utilize two ED glass elements and three aspherical lenses for optimum balance of chromatic aberration, astigmatism and distortion compensation, allowing for capture of images exhibiting extraordinary fidelity, with vivid color, high resolution and crisp contrast.

Although DX NIKKOR lenses can be attached to 35mm-format and IX 240-format film cameras, the smaller image circle they project on the film plane prohibits compatibility with these cameras. When this (or any DX NIKKOR) lens is mounted on a Nikon FX-format digital SLR, with the Image Area option set to Auto DX crop (default), the camera recognizes that a DX NIKKOR lens is in use and the DX crop mode is activated automatically.

Unexpectedly love this camera more than any other!

After borrowing a friend D90 a bunch of times, i knew i wanted my own. After checking out a local camera shop I was torn between the D90 and D5100. I did a lot of research and decided on the D5100 as my camera. I really liked the D90 everytime i used it, but now after using the D5100 i would never look back. Its easy to use, has a ton of cool features, and the swivel screen LCD display comes in handy more times than you'd ever imagine.

Very dissapointed

Bought the lens, wanted a great multipurpose lens for my D90, and bought it after reading other commentary here. Bought the lens, wanted a great multipurpose lens for my D90, and bought it after reading other commentary here. I found the lens to be a massive disappointment, for the following reasons; Most importantly the images were not very sharp. Really performed poorly in low light Did not respond as smoothly as the stock lens that came with the D90 The VR reduction made a ridiculously loud clicking noise when engaged and took a second to actually make the click The autofocus just would not work well with this lens Not sure if I bought a lemon or if the lens just generally has issues. I could not return it because I bought it and immediately went on a long vacation with the lens, I had become so used to Nikon quality that I also failed to bring the warranty, and since you need to mail it back within a set period of days, I blew past that as well. BTW, why do they make you mail the warranty!?!? You should be able to fill it in online, ridiculous in this day and age. Bottom line is that I have an expensive paper weight at the moment instead of a great multipurpose lens, for this amount of money, I am profoundly upset.

Lens creep

from Undisclosed

I found a easy solution that has worked for years. I took a 2'' elastic strip found at a sewing counter and made a band around the lens, just snug enough to allow manual turning, but will not let the lens creep. Easily removed, but I keep it on all of the time. It is black so it is barely noticeable Good luck.

Super versatile lens

Though you might need a flash at 3.5 often I find this lens per forms beautifully at parties, concerts and other low light events.

First impression is good

from St Louis  -  Casual user

I bought this lens to replace the kit 18-55mm lens. My hopes for this lens were that it would be relatively compact and light and that it would outperform the kit lens as far as contrast and of course much better zoom. It meets most of my expectations. It is compact for a 200mm but is much larger and heavier than the 18-55mm. They talk about the silent wave auto focus. It is quieter than the kit lens but it clicks when focusing which is almost more annoying. The picture quality seems better than the kit lens and the zoom is great. Overall I would recommend it but I don't know if it takes the place of the 18-55mm in terms of portability.

Do-able. I guess, it gets the job done.

from Undisclosed

Takes very good pictures compare to some higher end models of other brands. Video quality is a BIG NO NO. The video quality is too choppy and not very smooth when compared to other brand. Not recommending this camera because there are two newer model.

Best Carry Everywhere Lens

from Hollywood FL  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This lens covers everything from a respectable wide angle to almost super telephoto range. It can do almost macrophotography and is a fine portrait lens, particularly if you shoot wide open. It also features Vibration Reduction for hand holding under borderline lighting conditions. It's reasonably small so you can take it anywhere. It's probably the perfect travel photograpny lens.

Excellent Focus

from San Jose, CA  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This is my second version of this model. Since my first lens there have been two revisions and have to say while I was in love with the first lens this one is even better. The focusing is tight, clear and with VR you can't take a better picture. This is a great all around lens and is my go to for just about everything.

I am pleased with this perchase

from Naples, FL  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

I use this lens for everything. The zoom makes it versatile. No need to carry other lenses. The pictures are sharp.

Wanted this lens for the last few years.

from Warsaw, NY  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

Replaced the 3 lenses that I was using. Now ready to shoot no matter what the situation. Will probably never be off this camera.
