DX User review

I plan to use it for events and portraits. Taking pictures of family, etc.. I seen many reviews from a fx perspective, I wanted to give it from an actual dx user (d7000). The lens is heavy if you compare it to a kit lens, but not heavy as if you can't handle it, just heavier in general. You will be fine with the wide side, but if you were into range, you definitely lack that, especially if you are moving from a 18-105. Reach was never a huge thing for me, I wanted that 3d, sharp look with all...

I plan to use it for events and portraits. Taking pictures of family, etc.. I seen many reviews from a fx perspective, I wanted to give it from an actual dx user (d7000). You will be fine with the wide side, but if you were into range, you definitely lack that, especially if you are moving from a 18-105. Reach was never a huge thing for me, I wanted that 3d, sharp look with all my photos, this provides that. I plan to give it more use, I just got it 19 hours ago, but I'm impressed with it. I rented the 85mm 1.4 before this for an event. Nice lens, but it locked you into a look. I think this will serve you better initally in your road to get more lenses and equipment (fx body). It balances just fine (98%) with the grip, but is somewhat face heavy without it. Still, a nice feel considering most of us shoot with two hands. Don't let the weight distract you, its not as big of a deal as people make it out to be, especially if you are just starting out. You are getting reviews from people who are great photographers and/or have been shooting for years. They are at a differen't point than you maybe, so they provide reviews based on the type of person they are now. Not to say they are not trying to help you. I decided to write this review because I think a lot of us start off with dx cameras who want to get more advance and was told glass was the way to go. I'm sure there are other great glass out there and this is definitely one of them.

The Professional Standard for Normal Focal Length Zoom Lenses

from San Diego, California

The Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens is not only extremely sharp, it is equally versatile. It is my go-to lens for weddings and other social events. It also does very well as a food photography lens, as evidenced below by an image taken at a shutter speed of one second (on a tripod), an aperture of f/11, a focal length of 45mm, an ISO of 640, Matrix Metering, and Auto White Balance.

Great Lense

from st.paul mn  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This lens is top notch. I use this for portraits indoors and outdoors. Also great for event photography were the f 2.8 comes in handy to get that extra light.

Awesome lense

This lens is a workhorse. The speed and accuracy of the focus amazing. I love this lens for portrait work both in studio and outdoors.

Ridiculously Amazing!

from Atlanta, GA, USA

Ok, I'm not quite a pro but I've been shooting long enough now to know the difference between sub-par quality and spot on accuracy. The 24-70 is a legend of a lens! I rented one a couple of years ago for a trip just to see what all of the hype was about and it didn't take 10 shots to realize just how special the 24-70 really is. Here's why it's special: it's freaking sharper than a razor blade! Not to mention the color rendition you get with the lens is truly superb. Build quality is military grade with solid, super fast focus. It IS quite heavy but there is something about the feel of a heavy piece of glass that I kind of like, especially on a heavy body like my D810. I was coming from a 24-85 kit lens which was not too shabby either. I really didn't believe the 24-70 could possibly be that much better and to be fair, better is a relative term. I did get some fantastic shots with the 24-85, no doubt, but there's just something about the 24-70 that takes it to another level. I even purchased the 24-120 (which has VR) thinking perhaps it would shake out to be a better overall choice due to it's employment of vibration reduction and it's added focal length. I REALLY wanted to like the lens better than the 24-70 because I could always use more focal length. I did numerous comparisons between the two, testing bokeh, color, sharpness, etc. But in the end, the 24-70 once again came out the winner! This was mainly in the area of sharpness for which it excels in every way. Thus, I returned the 24-120. I find that there is a psychological aspect of shooting with such a legendary piece of photo gear. You just feel like what you're doing matters more. I've seen beautiful images taken with both the 24-85 and the 24-120 so I'm certainly not dogging either, but if you want the best overall image quality and are ok with sacrificing the added 50mm of focal length (and more importantly, the extra $$$) then you've got to go with this masterpiece of a lens!

Professional's Kit Lens

from Undisclosed

Why you have to have one? - This is a lens that every professional has. If a professional can only use 1 lens in his life, this is the lens, because this is made for general purposes. Why you don't have to have one? - It's expensive; and if you're not really serious with photography, just try other lenses because this lens is built for the serious and professionals. What's I like about this lens? - It's sharp on all focal lengths and apertures, renders color very well, renders out-of-focus blur very well, and this is solidly built for professionals because it can withstand in any weather conditions and hazardous situations, for a bit. - It's not too short, and not too long, it's just alright. - This lens is made to be in between of the specialty lenses not only for Nikon but for the other brands. Hence, being called by many as a general lens. What's I don't like about this lens? - It's heavy. - It's expensive. - You get a bit of attention when you take photos of other people in the streets, but not too much. Take another lens for street photography, if ever. - If this lens is not that wide for you, get a lens wider than 24. - If this lens is a bit short for portrait and you need longer reach, get a longer focal length lens. - If you're not satisfied with the bokeh, or you are not satisfied with how 2.8 handles low light situations, get a prime 50mm or 85mm with a 1.8/1.4 aperture lens.

Excellant purchase!

Absolutely love this lens! Best of everything

Somewhat disappointed at quality

from Portland, OR, USA

I was not getting sharp images with this lens so I had it checked. It was back focusing considerably. It took a setting of 8 on my D800 focus adjustment to correct. That is too much for an expensive prro lens in my opinion. The lens is also very heavy and bulky but extremely versatile and reasonably fast.

Great Lens!!!

from Fairfax, VA  -  Photo Enthusiast

This lens is definitely worth every penny! I had been wanting this lens for over two years. I wouldn't stop talking about it and my girlfriend told me to buy it so I would finally shut up about it...I think I talk more about it now. It is incredibly sharp! Everything about it is amazing. I was able to hike a mountain with it and take great photos at sunrise, and it does amazing work on portraits too. You've probably read many reviews about it being an all around workhorse. I feel the same way as those happy buyers. The lens is very fast at focusing, and has a very soft bokeh. It being 24-70 makes it ideal for most day to day situations. If you are thinking about buying it, stop thinking and just add it to your shopping cart.

A suberb lens for landscape and general

from far, far, northern California  -  Semi-pro Photographer

First of, I should mention that I boughta refurbished version of this lens from Adorama and sent it back. The zoom ring was sticky and tight, and I after reading about some problems with that on the net, I decided i did not want to deal with it. Adorama gave a a no-hassle, postage-paid return and credited me back my money. I trust them enough I purchased the brand-new one before I got the credit. The new one is a jewel of technology. It is solid, smooth, silky, and works flawlessly. You and I have read many reviews on this workhorse and I have little more to offer, but I will say my other go-to lenses are the 17-35 f2.8 and original 70-200 f2.8 VR. I also got an 85 mm f1.8 that I love. The 17-35 lens is more interesting at times and provides enormous opportunity for creativity. The 70-200 has a wonderful reach and great bokeh. However, the new 24-70 has a sharpness, and contrast that is amazing. It focuses faster in low light than the others, but it can struggle also. It is heavy, and with the HB-40 on, it is long. No matter, I biught it as a tool, and I am using it daily. It does not dissapoint.

A superior, versatile lens.

from Sammamish, WA, USA

I've been a Nikon user and a fan for years. I recently purchased a Nikon D810. This is my go-to lens. I like everything about it.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
Carl A  This is the most versatile lens I own. I should have purchased this lens long ago. I also have the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 and the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8, but since receiving the 24-70 I use the other two much less than before.
Michael J  What is the difference between this lens and the wide angle lens of the same specifications?
JOHN R  I am not familiar with the wide angle lens with these specifications however this is the best lens of the six lens that I have. The first thing that I was aware of is the improved quality of all my pictures that I took with this lens
Shopper  I am assuming that this lens will work seamlessly on a D7100 body, yes?
CHARLES P  The 24-70mm lens is my "GOTO" lens for 80 present of the general newspaper work I do. Great lens. Works on the D7000 and D7100.
