Great prime lens

By

from Charlotte, NC  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This is an outstanding prime lens. It is extremely sharp in center frame wide open and focus is very accurate. Focus speed is on par with the 24 and 85 1.4 lenses from Nikon. I believe it is consistently more accurate than the 24mm. No AF fine tuning was necessary on my D810 or D4S. The expected degree of vignetting is present wide open but this quickly dissipates as you stop down. This focal length is very good for environmental portraiture of individuals or groups. Also great as a walk around or street lens. Obviously it is heavier and more expensive than the 1.8 version but if you want 1.4, this is a great choice! I'm very happy with the purchase and Adorama was very quick in its delivery.

Bright and Optically Superb

By

from San Diego, California

This lens is perfect for interior low light situations. Below is a photo taken by candle light with a Nikon D4 camera body. The shutter speed is 1/125 of a second, the aperture is f/1.4, the ISO is 2200, with Auto White Balance and Matrix Metering.

Love this lens! I've been using the cheaper versions of the 35mm for years and was never happy with the image quality...and now this lens has solved those issues!

Great all purpose lens!

By

from Birmingham, Al.  -  Pro Photographer

I photograph a lot of different events from commercial to portraits, to newborns, to weddings and I take this lens with me to all of them. I enjoy that it is wider than a 50mm so I can easily take in more of the surrounding area (you cannot always back up) but it is not so wide making everything super distorted (just don't get too close to a person's nose and you will be ok). I shoot with a D800 so often what I will crop my camera to 1.2 in order to shrink my file size (.raw) in order to save my HD space, not to mention card space! I have read reviews saying it can be slow to focus but after using this lens in multiple situations with extremely low lighting I have not had any issues with this. It is very sharp at 2.8 and I have been very happy with the outcome and quality of the lens. I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a prime. It is worth the money and much better than the 28mm or the old 35 2.0mm. Lynn

MUST-HAVE PRIME

By

from Montgomery, IL  -  Pro Photographer

I had debated between this lens and the Sigma version. Looking back, I'm glad I ponied up the extra cash. You see, I already own & heavily use a Nikon 24mm f/1.4 wide angle lens for wedding photography. I'm a huge fan of primes. They're light, offer unparalleled image quality and a creamy depth of field. (Shallow depth of field on a wide angle is a very differentiating look. I seem to gravitate towards the world of f/2!) The one little nit I had with the 24mm, however, was distortion in the corners. I still wanted a wide angle that I felt comfortable using for large group portraits in a pinch. Not only does this 35mm excel here, but it basically shoots like a portrait lens, not unlike my 50 or 85mm f/1.4s. Much less distortion in the corners, too. I'm not at all a pixel-peeper, but when you notice someone's head is misshaped, it's hard not to argue the benefits of a mostly distortion-free wide angle. In the 2 weddings I've used it in so far, it has really done well with acquiring focus in low-light. I really can't think of a single bad thing to say about this lens. If you're on the fence and have the cash, it will make awesome photos for you. So just buy it!

Everyday lens

By

from Florida  -  Pro Photographer

I sold all my Nikon zooms (af-s f/2.8) and went back to prime lenses. The 35mm f/1.4 is now on my D800 most of the time. The view finder is VERY bright (compared to a f/2.8 lens). This lens is light, the focus is a little slow but accurate. You get the maximum sharpness of the lens at f/2, but in case of low light, f/1.4 is very usable. I find the 35mm focale much more usefull than 50mm. So now I have only primes lenses (make the camera bag quite heavy !) - 14mm f/2.8 (Rokinon) - 24mm PC-E f/3.5 (fantastic lens) - 35mm f/1.4 - 105mm f/2.8 micro - 200mm f/2.0 (best portraits lens) - 300mm f/2.8 (Tokina) - TC20E-III Most of my gear come from ADORAMA, best price, fast shipping, and great customer service. (no, they don't pay me for saying this :o)

Fantastic lens; my new favorite!

By

from Texas  -  Photo Enthusiast

I love this lens. Gorgeous and fast. I purchased it for pet photography because I needed something that would focus closer than the 50mm (this allows you to focus as close as .98 feet), that was good in low light and fast auto focus. This does the trick and I love the results. Produces beautiful out of focus areas if you are shooting wide open and beautiful bokeh. Expensive but worth it. I wasn't sure if I would use it that much since I have the 24-70mm and that lens has a 35mm focal length but that was getting too heavy for me to hold for extended periods of time one handed. This is great for environmental portraits as well. Before I got this lens, I was more into telephoto but now this stays on my camera 85 percent of the time.

Very good lens

By

from Orange County, CA  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is my go-to lens as it provides more drama than my 50 and easier to compose than the 24. A lot of fringing at wider apertures, but usually an easy fix in any good post-processing software. Lots of distortion too, again easily fixed.
