A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations rather than a gear system to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Quick Switching from AF to MF

Works fine but feels cheap
This is a genuine Nikon USA lens with 5-year warranty. It is Made in China. The lens is light, feel like cheap plastic. It looks like the 18-55mm kit lens. Manual focusing is tight. The front and rear lens elements are smaller than I thought for a f2.8. C.f. 35mm f1.8G, it does not have a feel of an almost $300 fixed focus lens. Other than that no complain. Having a reproduction ratio on the barrel is a plus.

I considered some of the more expensive zoom micro lenses offered by Nikon, but decided to take a chance on this less expensive 40mm prime lens. So glad I took the chance. I am using it on the D7000 body and it works perfectly. Auto-focus is great but I prefer to use the manual focus for extreme close-ups. The clarity of the pictures is terrific and exactly what I was hoping for.
The 40mm 2.8 macro goes wonderful with the D5100 with the drop down monitor. This makes it very easy to put this camera on or near ground level for great angles not normally seen. This lens is lightweight with a high quality lens that cannot be beat for this price. It is just that simple.
i am very much a beginner, but I bought everything Nikon brand. No regrets with this lens. I've taken many pictures of bugs with this lens, and I'm usually surprised at what a wonderful job it does.
This 40mm micro lens performs as well as other micro lenses three times the cost. The photo of the flower below was taken with a Nikon D7000 camera body at the following camera settings: a shutter speed of 1/250 of a second, an aperture of f/8, an ISO of 900, Auto White Balance, and Matrix Metering.
I recently purchased this Lens for the purpose of capturing small objects at close range. Right out of the box the first few images that I took were astounding. Although it doesn't have zoom feature, it will however focus automatically and I knew this when I purchased it. Some of the sample pictures inspired me to acquire this lens in which I have no regrets. At close range it is very important to utilize a tripod and remote shutter release to avoid or reduce camera shake causing blurry captures. Here is are a few photos using a Nikon D-7100.
OK! I didn't go into the store with the idea of coming out with this lens. Micro photography is way outside of what I normally focus on. This lens is just for the heck of it and to have fun. I have messed around with it several times and although I am not into micro photography I can tell you it has caused me to see things differently (to some degree). A good switch up every now and again is good for the eye. If you are stuck in landscape mode this might be the right tool to bring the fun back to your photography. It isn't the cleanest lens but it does the job. Go ahead and get out of your rhythm and try something different.
I do a lot of macro work and I wouldn't be able to shoot what I love without this lens.
This lens is incredibly sharp. When used for macro work the images you can capture with it are just amazing. You can heavily crop your images as much as you want and you won't loose detail until the file literally starts to pixelate! I love using this lens for macro. You just have to keep in mind that since this lens is only 40mm you will have to watch just how close you get to your subject. I wouldn't recommend this lens for insects but for everything else this lens is just amazing. It will also double as a portrait lens to. This lens has a focus limiter switch which limits the lens from traveling though its entire focus throw. This is handy when the lens isn't being used for macro work. I'd highly recommend this lens if your looking for a small compact macro/portrait lens. It really is a great buy.
This lens lets me add some macro, portrait, and low light capability at a resonable price.
I purchased the lens to replace a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D (which had produced very soft images) with my D7000. Love the size and weight of the lens. Focuses quitely and quickly. More importantly it produces very sharp images. Even wide open the image quality is good, and stopped down one stop gets much better. The focal length lends itself to be a "normal lens" mores so than a 50mm when using an APS sensor. I am very happy with the lens plus you get the ability to get close up's. Consider the cost and it is a no brainer
