My "Wow Factor" Lens
Of my little stable of lenses, this 50mm is my favorite for portraiture and general use. (I'm sure there are other lenses which pros prefer for portraits, but with the pro price tag attached.) It's roughly the same field of view on a DX camera as a 75mm short telephoto. Personally, I think that would be a quality that makes it good for portraits where you're looking for a little softness, but that's me. The large aperture allows excellent depth of field control as long as you're mindful of it and know what you're doing. This lens produces beautifully-blurred backgrounds that really make your subject stand out. For the less-experienced photographer, you'll simply be astounded at the difference versus the typical f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. And it's an absolute lifesaver when you're somewhere dark and no flash is allowed. If you do any nighttime photography whatsoever, or plan on it, do yourself a favor and put this lens in your kit right now. I used this lens almost exclusively when shooting graduation photos of my step-daughter and her boyfriend, the latter of which was very reluctant to participate (typical guy) until he saw the results. We ordered a digital album online for her graduation, incorporating all kinds of pictures, and people raved about the photos I took with this lens. My wife says the best picture of her daughter that she's ever seen was the product of my trusty 50mm. I hesitate to say this would be my choice for the "if you could have only one lens. . ." question, but that's only because I shoot a lot of wildlife and often need the reach. Let's just say that if I could have only one prime lens, it would be either this or my 35mm f/1.8 DX. The 35mm might be a tad more versatile, but none of my other lenses, including this one, seem to produce the "wow factor" of the 50mm. For indoor photos, tight spaces, and group shots the 35mm is a better choice, but if you've got room to move, the 50mm can't be beat. I haven't tried the new AF-S model, and while it might have a leg up on features and ergonomics (the manual-focus override would be nice), it's hard to imagine it being much better optics-wise.

Nikon ought to be ashamed
This is not a low light lens. Simply put it fails at producing sharp results at anything larger than f2.8 Thats bad, really bad because the cheap $100 cannon equivalent (just the f1.8 nevermind the 1.4 USM L) is razor sharp at f2.4 and costs a fraction. Even with a full frame camera, D700, I am disappointed with this lens. My old circa 1970's Minolta 58mm is sharper at 1.4 than this lens is at f2.4, shame, shame on you Nikon. I shoot concerts indoors and rely on a fast aperture but also a sharp product, exposure really doesn't matter if the images are fuzzy.

Ever since I purchased the 50mm f/1.4G, it has become my everyday lens for walking around. It is small and light so doesn't weigh me down. I can get shallow depth of field to focus on the eyes of my subject sharp and crisp while letting the rest soften out of focus and the background smooth in bokeh. The autofocus isn't as fast as the other Nikon primes I have, but it is fast enough that I use it photographing indoor sports using available light. I've had this lens for almost two years now and is one of my most heavily used lenses. I am pleased with the images the 50mm f/1.4G captures no matter what aperture I use because the results are clear.
The clarity of this lens is breathtaking, the speed is nothing but mandatory. This lens has by far exceeded my expectations.
Beautiful booked, very fast lens. Except for the slight vignetting, this is a real performer. I think, an ED glass could have made this lens best in the lineup.
I work for Nikon ( lucky Me ) so I get to take home almost everything they Produce. Hands down I find myself Coming Back to this lens , Great Low Light ( might have to use manual ) Unbelievable sharpness, and its to die for when using Aperture mode . I Love it !
Writing a review on a lens like this almost seems like writing a review on the Golden Gate Bridge - doesn't everyone know about it? Apparently not. Amongst many of my more serious photography friends, none own this lens. They covet the same ones I want (and now have - like a 24-70 or 70-200 f2.8) Truth be told, those are the lenses I saved for first - and then I bought this. I got it today and have been playing with it all night. It is small light and feels sturdy. Adorama sent me the wrong lens -the f1.8 - at first and it felt like a very cheap lens by comparison. This one has more metal and a little more heft. I bought this for the f1.4 aperture. I wanted glorious bokeh. I does not disappoint. (See below) It focuses lightning fast, and will get very close. I am very glad I got it. The photo below is shot at f1.4 iso 400 and is an HDR with 6 images. It is processed in Nik and Lightromm and Photmatix.
I use the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens to photograph famous paintings around the world in dimly lit museums. This lens provides excellent resolution, even at f/1.4, with little distortion. Below is a photo of Vincent van Gogh's "The Mulberry Tree" that hangs in the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. I used a Nikon D700 camera body, a shutter speed of 1/200 of a second, an aperture of f/1.4, an ISO of 1000, Tungsten White Balance, and Center Weighted Metering.
Sharp, fast focussing, excellent low light performance, perfect on my D4 and D810, no worries about tripods and flashes!
Great lens, it reminds me of my old film camera. It seems that no mater what i take the quality is unmatched.
Purchased this lens because it's a great prime lens / focal length for general purpose use and specifically to improve results for indoor basketball under challenging / artificial lighting conditions. Score! Other lenses have come and gone but this one stays in the bag. 50mm / FX is "right" for a lot of situations -- so everyone should have at least one -- and this is a fundamentally very good performer for the price point -- stills and video... Nikon covered the bases nicely here. The photos are beautiful. Build quality is A OK in my book. If you need a Nikon 50mm for FX you won't be disappointed with this one. Spending 3x as much will not produce better results for 99% of us. Improve your technique instead and pocket the money. Camera bodies will come and go. Glass holds value. This particular lens will always have a place in the bag.
I was very much looking forward to this lens, but after some use, I am somewhat disappointed in it. While it is great in low light situations, and I love using it indoors, it yields very soft images with low contrast. Especially when used outside. When shooting wide open at f1.4, some chromatic aberration is seen, which is very frustrating. I primarily use it for photographing newborns inside. I will say, however, I do use it a lot for video on my D300s, and am pleased with it's performance in that respect.
