My main goal in having this lens was to photograph hawks and falcons in our neighborhood. My longest reach before this lens was 200mm and I knew the extra 100mm would give me more shot options. What's great about the lens is the sharpness and color. Both exceeded my expectations. I've also enjoyed the sharpness of the main subject with a rich blurred background. The lens has a great solid and dependable feel. I haven't experienced any real focus issues with lens creep if I'm pointing up or down. The lens hood is excellent quality as well. Some may desire a greater aperature range, but with my Nikon D7100, it's not an issue. The lens may seem too heavy for some, but I expected some weight from the length and I don't find it excessive. My "worst experience" with the new lens was having to rearrange my camera bag - so I'm really pleased. From using a 200mm lens, I knew auto focus would not always be lightening fast, but I tend to use manual focus anyway.
I have been shooting a lot with this lens, often replacing the sigma 18-250 that I began to use as an all purpose lens. Using my d5200 or d7100, I simply get much sharper photos with excellent characteristics. Quite by surprise, I processed several shots I took of the moon (using a tripod). See for yourself. this lens is awesome on my DX cameras. this is NOT a fast lens, but I still managed to catch a few turkey vultures in flight
Using this lens with Nikon D3300, it is astonishing how it can focus "on the go" taking point'n'shoot pictures of dragonflies rushing over a lake or birds flying through the air: without tripod, in focus, crisp clear. We did not think that would work without a tripod, but in daylight, it works just fine. Very satisfied as an amateur. Now, we do realize that 58mm lens opening is not a very big opening for a 300mm zoom, however, the 55-300mm spread is more than we hoped for in this price category.
Bought factory refurbished from Adorama, lens couldnt have looked more fresh and new. Great price on a solid lens.
I love the vibration reduction feature. It is a fun lens and takes great pictures.
just got it learning how to shoot i am new . it takes great shoots
Have really gotten into photography recently, this lens is definitely good pickup. It is very versatile and can be used for a huge variety of shots. I use it for sports and wildlife photos as well as landscapes and sunsets.
Ordered this lens for my D5200, and immediately was disappointed with the focusing and the sharpness of the pictures at higher zooms. I had read that the 70-300vr was a higher quality lens and I thought "I'm not a professional so I can settle for the 55-300vr." Had the lens for a day and returned it because I felt that I allowed my self to settle for something that did not serve me in order to save 70 bucks. I ordered the 70-300vr instead for many reasons including Internal focus, VR2, and the shear speed of the auto focus. Also for the manual focus over ride when in auto focus. Next time I'll do my research more thoroughly.
I've used this lens for a variety of situations and it works beautifully for the most part! It works the best in well lit areas when your subject isn't doing a whole lot of moving. The poorer the light and the more movement happening, the longer it takes to focus, even compared to other lenses. I've noticed that, even in good lighting, it has a tendency to actually focus slightly behind the subject, despite the indicator lighting up in the right spots. That being said, I use it for a lot of sports and other action photography, and I still manage to get some great close-ups after making my own adjustments.
Took some great pictures of super moon and birds in flight. Detail is superb. No manual aperture ring and manual focus ring is a bit small for my fat fingers, but I knew it would cost a lot more to get these features in a pro lens.
