New fast telephoto zoom lens AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II for use with digital- and film-SLR cameras. A number of unique Nikon technologies have been adopted for this lens, including the use of seven ED glass elements, Nano Crystal Coat, a vibration reduction (VR II) system that provides camera shake compensation equivalent to increases in shutter speed by four steps, and a Silent Wave Motor (SWM).
This fast telephoto zoom lens provides the excellent performance and superior image quality demanded by professional and advanced amateur photographers.
With release of this lens, Nikon has structured an incomparable NIKKOR zoom lens system that also includes the current AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED and AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED for complete coverage of focal lengths from 14mm to 200mm with support for a maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire range.
The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II offers excellent performance throughout its range of focal lengths, from the natural rendering characteristics of mid-range telephoto positions to the compressed perspective of telephoto positions. The lens makes the most of a wide variety of scenes, from portraits to staged events as well as sports photography under nighttime lighting, press photography, and scenes that require soft rendering of out-of-focus portions.
The use of seven ED glass elements provides the ultimate in rendering characteristics for capture of images exhibiting excellent resolution and high contrast. The additional use of Nano Crystal Coat effectively suppresses ghost and flare for clear images. Adoption of the Silent Wave Motor (SWM) allows for smooth and quiet autofocusing that makes the most of camera autofocus subject tracking systems. The lens also provides superior operation with three focus modes M, A/M, M/A for manual focusing or manually fine-tuning focus acquired with autofocus by simply rotating the lens' focus ring.
The vibration reduction system (VR II) provides camera shake compensation equivalent to increases in shutter speed by four steps*. Two vibration reduction modes are available.
NORMAL mode: The vibration reduction mechanism reduces ordinary camera shake. Panning is also supported.
ACTIVE mode: The vibration reduction mechanism reduces extreme camera shake, such as that which occurs with shooting from a moving vehicle.

Excellent Lens. Nikon has done it again
I just received this lens a couple of days ago so I haven't been able to test it extensively, but so far the results far exceeds the previous version of this lens. I still feel that the Image Quality of the original VR lens is outstanding and it should be considered in your decision making. The VR II is a definite improvement. I have been able to shoot at 1/20 shutter speed without any visible motion blur. I am planning on shooting more weddings and events. The VR II on the new lens will prov...View full Review

I have been able to shoot at 1/20 shutter speed without any visible motion blur. I am planning on shooting more weddings and events. The VR II on the new lens will provide me the results I've been trying to get in low lighting. There is almost no visible vignetting and the corners of the images remain relatively sharp. The down side as many will state is the weight and the price. [...]

DO NOT BUY FROM ADORAMA
The lens itself is awesome, there is no disputing that. However I would highly recommend you purchase this item elsewhere. I ordered a new one from Adorama and received a USED lens. The Nikon box was very beat up, and the lens was missing the tripod foot. Completely unacceptable given the price. They will refund the money of course but why not buy from somewhere else and save yourself the hassle later on? Oh, did I mention they ruined Christmas? Being unable to call and get help after 2pm my time is seriously bad service.

I dreamed of this lens a long time before I pulled the trigger. If you are sitting on the fence like I was, pull the trigger, you will not regret it! The night shots with existing light are out of this world.
Awesome lens! Very sharp in all focal lengths. You can tell a big difference in sharpness with the vibration reduction. Excellent for low light shooting when you can't get too close to subject.
I was renting this lens for 98% of my shoots, and I finally bit the bullet and picked up one of my own. It is the BEST lens out there! The only downside is it's weight, but I can live with that. Although I will say it feels a bit heavier now that I'm paying it off ;)
This lens nails the focus with AF Fine Tune set to 0, at all focal lengths, on my D810. The images have excellent contrast and resolution, to the point that with the TC14 E-II at an effective 280mm it nearly matches the image quality of my 300mm f/2.8 AFS VR-II. (Of course the 300 is hardly even getting started when used without a TC). And the zoom + TC is tremendously lighter and a good bit smaller than my 300. It will save me lugging the big beast from time to time. These observations were made while using it on a D810. The VR on this zoom is stunning. It's just possible to get tack sharp 1/5th second handheld images at 200mm. Doing the same at 1/10th second is just plain easy. I actually selected "indoors low light" as a best use because it consistently gives me a good image inside a normally lit home, without having to add a light source. The Bokeh is very passable. Not the absolute leader but it won't offend either. I rated the build "durable" because "strong" and "rugged" sound like what you'd call a hammer. Don't buy any camera lens if what you really want is a hammer. I'm not at all worried about the construction. f/4 "Trinity"? Not quite. It's more of a duo. The 70-200 f/4 and the 16-35 f/4 are well matched in control layout and handling. The image quality and VR on the longer lens are better though. The 24-120 is the odd one out. The rings are opposite, it's front heavy, and it is lower in image quality. I had one but sold it.
As a seasoned pro, I've hung up my 70 to 20mm 2.8ED lens for the F4. It's razor sharp and over 20 ounces lighter the the F2.8....a no brainer. Incredible in low light....wish i bought it sooner!
You're getting what you paid for.
I would buy this product again and again.
I have recently purchased this lens and was working good. After two weeks of its purchase the Auto Focus funcion stopped working. I have made many communication with Adorama and are not taking any responsibility to fix the problem. This was purchased through web and shipped to Qatar where I am residing. I have been told by Adoram to directly contact with the manufacturers in US for fix the problem. However I contacted the same shipping company to ship the item to US and they confirmed shipping cost and re-import tax will cost me almost half of the original lens cost. Adorama is not at all helped in this. I will not recommend for purchase of such item if not living US
I've used this lens for 2 shooting sessions so far, and it's incredibly sharp!! Seems sharper than my 85/1.8D. And the maximum aperture f/4 is already tack sharp. The weight feels good with my D600. Well balanced, and definitely not too heavy at all. I can probably shoot all day long with it. Focusing was really responsive and fast. Did a quick series of bird-in-flight shots, almost every photo was in focus and sharp. VR seems great, although I haven't had a chance to test it extensively yet. Did a 1/30 @ 200mm, and it came out sharp, so I'm satisfied. Minimum focusing distance is around 1meter, which is surprisingly close. It's definitely not a macro lens, but it's a good close-up distance for my shooting style I'd say the only downside I've seen so far, is the lens hood. It's perfectly functioning, just doesn't look that cool compare to the 70-200 f/2.8G VRII, or 24-70 f/2.8. I'd like that bayonet lens hood instead of the circular ones.
Clear, sharp images, fast autofocus, a professional's lens.
