New fast telephoto zoom lens AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II for use with digital- and film-SLR cameras. A number of unique Nikon technologies have been adopted for this lens, including the use of seven ED glass elements, Nano Crystal Coat, a vibration reduction (VR II) system that provides camera shake compensation equivalent to increases in shutter speed by four steps, and a Silent Wave Motor (SWM).

This fast telephoto zoom lens provides the excellent performance and superior image quality demanded by professional and advanced amateur photographers.

With release of this lens, Nikon has structured an incomparable NIKKOR zoom lens system that also includes the current AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED and AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED for complete coverage of focal lengths from 14mm to 200mm with support for a maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire range.

The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II offers excellent performance throughout its range of focal lengths, from the natural rendering characteristics of mid-range telephoto positions to the compressed perspective of telephoto positions. The lens makes the most of a wide variety of scenes, from portraits to staged events as well as sports photography under nighttime lighting, press photography, and scenes that require soft rendering of out-of-focus portions.

The use of seven ED glass elements provides the ultimate in rendering characteristics for capture of images exhibiting excellent resolution and high contrast. The additional use of Nano Crystal Coat effectively suppresses ghost and flare for clear images. Adoption of the Silent Wave Motor (SWM) allows for smooth and quiet autofocusing that makes the most of camera autofocus subject tracking systems. The lens also provides superior operation with three focus modes M, A/M, M/A for manual focusing or manually fine-tuning focus acquired with autofocus by simply rotating the lens' focus ring.

The vibration reduction system (VR II) provides camera shake compensation equivalent to increases in shutter speed by four steps*. Two vibration reduction modes are available.

NORMAL mode: The vibration reduction mechanism reduces ordinary camera shake. Panning is also supported.

ACTIVE mode: The vibration reduction mechanism reduces extreme camera shake, such as that which occurs with shooting from a moving vehicle.

Fast, quiet, and amazingly sharp.

I've had this lense a few months after it came out couple of years ago. Have taken thousands of photos with it under most lighting conditions both indoor and outdoor. The lense itself is built like a tank. Although, it look nicer (compaired to its counterpart in another brand), but there is no doubt how solidly it look and feel in your hand. Both the focus and the zoom rings are smooth and fluid with just the right amount of resistance. Autofocus is superfast and very quiet. Image quality

Image quality is very sharp at all focal lenght with great bokeh. Yes, it is heavy and pricey but I guess that's the price we all have to pay to get a good pro quality lense. I hope Nikon would reconsider redesigning the lense hood. It looks cute but doesn't serve it's purpose at certain angles.

DO NOT BUY FROM ADORAMA

The lens itself is awesome, there is no disputing that. However I would highly recommend you purchase this item elsewhere. I ordered a new one from Adorama and received a USED lens. The Nikon box was very beat up, and the lens was missing the tripod foot. Completely unacceptable given the price. They will refund the money of course but why not buy from somewhere else and save yourself the hassle later on? Oh, did I mention they ruined Christmas? By the time I received the lens customer service was closed. Adorama, you guys realize you have west coast customers right? Being unable to call and get help after 2pm my time is seriously bad service.

Nice lens might need a new bag now

By

Lens has been good so far. I use it for mostly sports photos for a newspaper. Only problem is its a bit longer than my last lens, so I might need to get a new bag.

Great Lens!

I dreamed of this lens a long time before I pulled the trigger. If you are sitting on the fence like I was, pull the trigger, you will not regret it! The night shots with existing light are out of this world.

Great lens!

By

Awesome lens! Very sharp in all focal lengths. You can tell a big difference in sharpness with the vibration reduction. Excellent for low light shooting when you can't get too close to subject.

Best lens you can buy

By

I was renting this lens for 98% of my shoots, and I finally bit the bullet and picked up one of my own. It is the BEST lens out there! The only downside is it's weight, but I can live with that. Although I will say it feels a bit heavier now that I'm paying it off ;)

Not recommend for who lives outside US

By

I have recently purchased this lens and was working good. After two weeks of its purchase the Auto Focus funcion stopped working. I have made many communication with Adorama and are not taking any responsibility to fix the problem. This was purchased through web and shipped to Qatar where I am residing. I have been told by Adoram to directly contact with the manufacturers in US for fix the problem. However I contacted the same shipping company to ship the item to US and they confirmed shipping cost and re-import tax will cost me almost half of the original lens cost. Adorama is not at all helped in this. I will not recommend for purchase of such item if not living US

Great (big) lens

By

Optically, this lens is a wonder. Image quality is essentially perfect, the VR makes hand holding a reasonable option for this large lens, and focus is instantaneous. Nevertheless, with a heavy heart, I ended up returning the lens and buying the f4 because the f2.8 was just too heavy and cumbersome for travel photography, my primary intended use for the lens. Also, I had to return a couple of used f2.8 lenses that I tried before I ordered the new one because they mounted loosely on my D800. The new one did not have the problem.

The perfect purchase

By

I found the auto focus to be very fast and accurate, loving the VR. The perfect portrait lens!

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

Questions about this item:

Shopper  will this lense work on my D80? Is this more lense, than camera?
PAUL A  Yes, it will work on your D80. Keep in mind that the D80 has a crop sensor, so 70-200 will feel more like 100-300 (which you may want). The D80 is also about eight years old, so it might be worth it to step up to a newer body (and full frame, if you're considering dropping this kind of money on a lens). A D700 can be found used for a bit more than a grand, and it's a workhorse. IMHO, the answer to your second question is thus probably "yes". You could also check out the 70-200 f/4 version, which is half the price and only a bit more than half the weight.
Shopper  Is this lens compatible with the D7000? Thank you!
ANH P  Yes it is...
Shopper  What is the piece on the bottom for?
RICK M  That is a tripod foot. It can be swiveled or removed.
