Magical images

Magical images, from portraits to anything I have shot, street photos, flowers, landscapes I use it most at large apertures, often wide open , results are outstanding, I can crop 100% and still get decent images. Love the color rendition. Color aberration is noticeable when shooting bright areas that have strong contrasts, this I have not seen with more modern ED Nikon lenses. Only wish this had VR, my % of keepers shooting slower than 1/200 drops dramatically.

Amazingly Sharp Lens

The lens is perfectly balanced on my camera. It is a wonderful portrait lens as well as a crisp landscape lens.

One of the greatest Nikkor portrait lenses ever

By

This is one of the best portrait lenses out there. I fell in love with the 85mm f1.4D since the first shot I've taken with it. I started using it on a D300 and I currently use it on my D3. This lens is a gem: superb build quality (too bad lenses aren't build this way anymore), tack sharp wide open, amazing colors (although on the neutral side, not the warm side), exquisite defocus all this at a very good price. Mine focuses fast and precise, especially on my D3. I love the metal sun shade (which is terrific when you use CPL filters because you can rotate them smoother and have better control), the aperture ring is very useful if you can't control the diaphragm when in video mode (on D7x00, D6x0 bodies). I love using the aperture ring on my F100. Because it does rely on the AF motor inside your Nikon body, to achieve fast and precise focus you need a serious body. I recommend D3/D4 for perfect tack sharp photos @ f1.4. I noticed that on D810 it's tack sharp in the center @ f1.4 only if you shoot in live view mode. This is because any other AF system beside the ones in the D3/D4 aren't so micro-precise. Also the shutter-lag in the D3/D4 bodies is almost 0 and this aids a lot when shooting wide open. When shot on D8x0 and D6x0 the image is definitely sharp in the center @ f1.4 but you can't imagine how sharp it can be unless you start using a proper focusing and shooting technique - I guess this is why some folks don't get sharp images no matter what they do. I only shoot at f1.4 - it's that good! :)

What a beautiful lens. All metal construction with superb build quality. Produces crystal clear potraits in low light with wonderful bokeh. Highly recommended.

The Bokeh Queen...

By

I have had this lens on my wish list for a while, and finally went for it. So glad I did. I have always been a 70-200 2.8 guy, and still am for certain things, but I have found this 85mm 1.4d gives you the best bokeh effects specifically for portrait applications. And is much easier to carry around as well...I think a new love affair has begun for me....very solid construction...feels balanced with my D3. I've shot the 85mm 1.4G as well. It may have a slight edge in some areas, but I find those differences to be minor.

Heavy Duty

By

This is a heavy, all metal lens. Even the lens hood is metal. The drawback is I can't turn the hood around and screw it onto the lens while not using it, so risk of loss is high. Otherwise, the lens itself is really nice, takes beautiful, sharp portraits with creamy bokeh, as I expected. Couldn't beat the price from Adorama for this like new piece of gear. Great addition to my collection.

upgrade from my 1.8

I am new to this lens, I have missed some shots. It is new for me so It prob is user error. I can already can tell that it will be awesome for low light and indoor shooting professionally. I think personally it will be fun at my son's basketball games:)

Refurbished by Nikon - dissapointed

By

I bought this lens refurbished instead of used because I felt confident that a Nikon technician had gone through the lens and brought it up to "like new" specs. I was wrong. There were light scuffs on the front element and a fair amount of internal dust. Having said that, I took the lens out to a local flea market to photograph people (this IS after all, a people lens). Despite the un-perfect condition of the lens, some of the images I took that day were simply breathtaking. The bokeh is like pure cream. It was back focusing a bit but I fixed that in camera settings. I have decided to keep it "as is"...

Difficult To Remove from Camera

By

Not because of any fitting issue, but because it my other lenses seem so inferior now. I shoot in a variety of settings, and I try to make this lens work in most of those settings. I am involved in photojournalism, shooting stock images, and always taking lots of pictures of my kids. This lens obviously shines brightest for portraits, but I am enjoying using it in whatever situation I can. I opted for the 1.4D over the 1.4G mostly because of budget constraints. The big savings in cost were worth it for me. It would be nice to have the instant manual focus override, the quick snap-on hood, the internal autofocus motor so it would autofocus on my older D60 body that my wife uses, etc. But for now, I would rather pocket the money and still take incredible images. On my D7000, I was having some autofocus issues at first. After making fine tune adjustments for the lens in the D7000 menu (very easy to do), this issue has been resolved. Very very happy with my purchase. Adorama staff were great on the phone placing the order, and they shipped it very quick.

Phenomenal lens, tack sharp, creamy, melted butter of a bokeh

By

I have bought this lens originally for my Nikon D700, and it performed flawlessly. Tack sharp at 1.4, and the falloff into dream-like bokeh is quite beautiful. I also love the all metal screw in lens hood, very high quality and THAT's protection for the lens (I don't use UV filters, I think the hood is protection enough - especially this one). Construction-wise it's well built, the AF motor is a tad bid louder than the newer G lenses, but I don't mind that at all. For me it's the image quality at the end of the day. Though I was worried that when I upgraded to D800E and the D600 this lens would not be able to keep up, I was pleasantly surprised. I love everything about this lens, it's great for portraits. I only shoot it at 1.4. That what this lens was meant for. Get it, if you can find a used one, it's built like a tank, so it lasts forever, and I have a feeling it holds its used value, so even if you give it up, you are not likely going to lose much.

Love it!

I'm a portrait photographer and this lens is a must. The quality of pictures I get for my clients is wonderful. It helps me to get the shot I want through the camera, so there is less time editing.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
DAVID D  I had read numerous good reports of Nikon's refurbished lenses, and this provided a significant savings. This lens (85mm/1.4) is a FINE piece of glass, one of my favorite lenses! Still, if I had to do it again, I would probably splurge and get the newer "G" version. What I read is that it really does acquire focus much better in dim light (i.e., the very purpose of such fast glass in the first place).
Shopper  What is the warranty of a this refurbished lens? Are they like new in appearance?
MARK S  The warranty is 90 days from Nikon. If you buy the Adorama VIP warranty for $7.99 you're covered for 12 additonal months. I buy the VIP warranty with all my refurbished lens purchases and have never had a problem.
