Absolutely Wonderful Lens

This lens is absolutely the best. Pick your parameter, pick your criteria. This lens will surpass any expectation you may have in terms of performance. Low lighting, bright lighting, indoors, or outside. I've matched it with a D-600 and the results have been fabulous. This is now my "walk-around" kit. for street/people photography. My clients love what I can do with this lens as well.

Amazingly Sharp Lens

The lens is perfectly balanced on my camera. It is a wonderful portrait lens as well as a crisp landscape lens.

Nice but not so impressive

Ordered one and tested on full frame. It is such a highly rated lens in Nikon lens, so I expected more. Here are the main issues from the copy I got: 1. Front focus at f1.4, gone at f2. I know the depth of field difference. It is disappointing, maybe I got a bad copy. 2. Still see significant amount of CA, no better than my old 105mm DC. 3. Focus speed and build quality are just ok. 4. The copy I got has no "US" prefix, although it came with US warranties. Nikon is selling lens made for non-US market. Disappointing.

Good lens

I like this lens for portraits. It creates a perfect compression of the background and lovely bokeh. The only reason i rated it 4 stars is because sometimes when shooting with apertures like 1.4 and 1.8 is really hard to get a good focus area.

5% better than the 1.8g, but not mine

I already have the 1.8g version, however having tried the 1.4g, I must say I prefer the 1.8g. The 1.8g is sharper at comparable apertures, and by f2.8, I can't see any discernible differences, and neither can my wife. We're both computer graphics professionals by the way. What I do see with the 1.4g, is a metric ton of chromatic aberrations. The bokeh is nicer on the 1.4, but that's to be expected given that it's a f1.4 lens. Also, the colors are slightly warmer. Is it worth the 3 times premium over the 1.8? Nope, unless you're super rich, and must have the best. Build quality is awesome I must say. I returned mine.

Sharpest yet.

This Nikon 85mm AF-S f/1.4 G is one of, if not, the sharpest 85mm lens I own made for/by Nikon. My experience is limited with this lens. The frames shot prove it's worth. Focus razor sharp, Fast low light ability. Although the construction was designed to lighten and cheapen the product careful handling makes it a non-issue. I would not want to drop this lens. Doesn't work with my F type bodies. Over all worth every penny I spent for it. Research and compare, if you're a Nikon user you may love this lens as I do.

The Real McCoy!

I use this for portraits, HS basketball, and landscaping. I can't tell you the number of reviews I've read about a particular lens, and how it stays on someones camera forever, etc... But this lens is just so much fun! Using this lens on my D800e does in fact put my other lenses to shame with clarity and bokeh. I can easily read the lettering on a basketball shooting in the gym at ISO 640 1/250 at 1.4 even at half court. The kids love these pictures. I hesitated like many others, but had an opportunity for a portrait shoot and knew I had to have it. Wish I'd gotten it earlier, sound familiar? Wondering if there is a low light condition that can't be shot?

One of the greatest Nikkor portrait lenses ever

This is one of the best portrait lenses out there. I fell in love with the 85mm f1.4D since the first shot I've taken with it. I started using it on a D300 and I currently use it on my D3. This lens is a gem: superb build quality (too bad lenses aren't build this way anymore), tack sharp wide open, amazing colors (although on the neutral side, not the warm side), exquisite defocus all this at a very good price. Mine focuses fast and precise, especially on my D3. I love the metal sun shade (which is terrific when you use CPL filters because you can rotate them smoother and have better control), the aperture ring is very useful if you can't control the diaphragm when in video mode (on D7x00, D6x0 bodies). I love using the aperture ring on my F100. Because it does rely on the AF motor inside your Nikon body, to achieve fast and precise focus you need a serious body. I recommend D3/D4 for perfect tack sharp photos @ f1.4. I noticed that on D810 it's tack sharp in the center @ f1.4 only if you shoot in live view mode. This is because any other AF system beside the ones in the D3/D4 aren't so micro-precise. Also the shutter-lag in the D3/D4 bodies is almost 0 and this aids a lot when shooting wide open. When shot on D8x0 and D6x0 the image is definitely sharp in the center @ f1.4 but you can't imagine how sharp it can be unless you start using a proper focusing and shooting technique - I guess this is why some folks don't get sharp images no matter what they do. I only shoot at f1.4 - it's that good! :)

This lens is great for making bokehlicious images!!!

I've had the 85mm f/1.4G now for over a year and have been very satisfied with this lens. It was the second prime lens I purchased for my camera as I upgraded the gear in my bag and transitioned to prime lenses. My decision on the purchase was based on my wanting the focal length and desire for a fast lens. It was extremely useful photographing indoor sports using only available light. The focus is so sweet leaving the background bokehlicious at f/1.4. Stop down a bit to give a hint of the background or all the way to provide a sense of place without drawing attention away from the subject. The autofocus works fast enough as i photograph players on the court and most importantly for me - my dog having fun at the park or wherever we travel to. The 85mm f/1.4G is definitely worth purchasing for creating tasty images with delicious bokeh and crazy sharpness. The weight of all that glass is noticeable with it's impressive real estate of 77mm ring size. I appreciate the balance of glass, metal, and plastic that it doesn't feel burdensome to handle. I've used this lens a lot and it doesn't spend time collecting dust so I find it to be a great purchase for me.

Great size and supper sharp !

I just received this lens yesterday after a six week wait due to a back order issue, however after using it for just one day it was well worth the wait. This lens so far is the best lens of this focal length that I have ever used. Great Lens!
