Product Highlights

  • Wide aperture settings allow the Nikon 85mm to offer a consistent background blur, creating a highly addictive effect.

A good lens can elevate an amateur photographer into a professional photographer, and a professional photographer into the stratosphere. The Nikon 85mm lens is one such lens.

Learn about the Nikon 85mm 1.8G AF-S FX Nikkor Lens

Ever wonder how professional photographers achieve a crisp, high-definition image whether they’re shooting the first dance at a wedding or, say, a bowl of fruit? The truth is, it’s all in the lens. And the quality and crispness of your photography and high-definition video is about to get a major upgrade if you decide to use the Nikon 85mm 1.8G AF-S FX Nikkor lens at your next gig.

But let’s talk specifics. How exactly does the Nikon 85mm achieve portrait-style shots at the blink of a shutter? It begins with Nikon’s Internal Focus (IF) system, which provides you with the ability to seamlessly move from shot to shot, recording all the while, without having to worry about the quality of your lens’ focus. And with a mounted, effective field of view at 127 mm, you know that you’ll have exactly what you need to capture every moment—whether it’s a still photograph or an HD video that needs to capture a special moment with minute after minute of effective focus and image integrity.

The Nikon 85mm 1.8G AF-S FX Nikkor Lens is more than just a lens, because it provides the focus quality you’ll need for a range of functions, including:

  • Capture beautiful portraits, every time. Studio light? Natural light? It doesn’t really matter. The Nikon 85mm is a medium telephoto portrait lens, which means it will capture the attractiveness of your subject in the foreground with a subtle background blur. This is just as effective for spontaneous portraits at live events as it is with studio photographs and headshots.
  • Achieve a stunning background blurat will. Speaking of that background blur, this 85mm Nikkor lens provides blurred backgrounds with consistency and precision, allowing you to highlight your subject in every single photograph. How is this effect achieved? The AF-S Nikon f/1.8G will automatically resolve a background blur thanks to wide aperture settings—simply arm your lens and get ready to create soft, impressionistic backgrounds.
  • Fast, effective results. The Nikon 85mm may be a professional-quality lens, but it’s amateur-friendly. This is thanks to a few features, including Nikon’s SWM (Silent Wave Motor) with quick, accurate autofocus and the SIC by Nikon (Super Integrating Coating) which enhances light transmission and offers effective and beautiful concentrations of colors. There’s more to photography than point-and-click, of course, but the Nikon 85mm 1.8g lens does a lot to make taking photos easier on the person behind the lens.
  • Flexibility. Want to take a landscape shot in low light? Photograph a wedding, nailing every photograph? Take HD video of a sporting event? This lens can do it all, capturing the subject with stunning accuracy and precision, and blurring the background with consistency. The wide aperture allows for a natural field depth that looks professional and crisp even when taking live video.
  • Subject isolation. Need a quick photograph of Aunt Beatrice at the wedding, but don’t want to make her wait? Effects like the wide aperture, consistent and accurate auto-focus, and depth of field allow you to quickly and easily isolate a subject, providing a crystal-clear photograph of your subject every time.

Armed with an 85 Nikon 1.8g used, brand new, or even a Nikon 85mm 1.8 refurbished, you’ll be able to take beautiful landscape, low light, night, and portrait shots. Shop with Adorama and you’ll also be well equipped for weddings, video, sports, and other live events. You can be a professional photograph with this lens in hand, but you won’t need to be, as the Nikon 85 mm F/1.8 is suited for casual photographers, semi-pro photographers, and professional photographers as well. Go to Adorama for your 85 1.8 Nikon today if you want to offer the same level of quality and consistency.

Nikon 85mm F/1.8 Features

  • Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM): Enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocus
  • Fast f/1.8, compact FX-format prime (fixed focal length) medium telephoto lens: Optimized for FX-format D-SLR cameras but equally at home on any Nikon DX-format D-SLR, featuring SilentWave Motor technology (SWM) and Internal Focusing (IF)
  • Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC): To enhance the performance of its optical lens elements, Nikon employs an exclusive multilayer lens coating that helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level. Nikon SIC achieves a number of objectives, including minimized reflection in the wider wavelength range and superior color balance and reproduction

All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the nonextending lens barrel. This allows for a more compact, lightweight construction as well as a closer focusing distance.
  • M/A Focus Mode Switch: AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon's exclusive M/A mode, that allows switching from autofocus to manual operation with virtually no time lag even during AF servo operation and regardless of AF mode in use.

Phenomenal Lens!

I bought this lens a few weeks ago and it's been incredible to shoot with. It's extremely quick and great in low light. The 1.8 f-stop allows for a creamy bokeh. For a long time, I dreamed about one day purchasing the 85mm 1.4G, but now that I've purchased this one, I am extremely content.

Just got it today, looks used

This is the second one I bought. I love the first one but I ended up giving to my brother. I bought a 24-70mm to see if it can be a replacement, but I felt the 85mm still performed better. I was so excited to get this but a bit disappointed as the item looks used or at least open box - there's tear on the plastic packaging, manual is creased. I only took a couple of test shots, seems to be ok, so hopefully I don't have to go through the hassle or returning. I know there's a Nikon warranty, ju...

I know there's a Nikon warranty, just don't like the feeling I didn't get a brand new lens when I paid for one. Maybe I'm being too picky lol. Anyways I will probably try another store next time, still need a wide angle lens.

Awesome Lens

An everything lens that is the sharpest!

Really worth waiting for!

from Montreal, Quebec, Canada  -  Photo Enthusiast

I waited three months for this lens because of a special price issued by Adorama in June 2014. At one point, it was unsure if the offer would be delivered by the manufacturer but it finally came through. I saved $160 on this lens thanks to Adorama. Is it in good condition? The best. I used it immediately to take portraits and landscape shots and it certainly requires good technique but delivers top notch results as expected from all reviews of this lens. I had waited 3 years for this lens and waiting an additional 3 months for this deal was a cakewalk. Thank you Adorama!

This lens is so sharp and reasonably priced!

Great lens and very versatile

from chicago, IL

Just upgraded to an FX body and so still experimenting, but have found a terrific use for this lens on my old DX body. It works great as a semi-telephoto lens, which I use to snap awesome action pics of kids' hockey games! The arenas are often dimly lit compared to NHL games, but this lens lets me take bright, crisp pics at 1/500 of a second from behind the glass. At larger apertures, the skaters appear so crisp and colorful, and really pop against the soft backgrounds. Lens not long enough to shoot from stands or bench; guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and get the 70-200 mm f2.8 and pop that on my D610.

If only every lens were this good….

from Long Island, NY

I had heard great things about this gem, yet it has surpassed my expectations. At less than $500 it is fantastic value. I took some comparison shots with my 80-200mm F2.8D and I could see the difference on the camera monitor without any magnification - the shots taken on the 85 1.8 just popped at f2.8. Comparing later on Photoshop the difference was profound - sharpness, contrast, colour rendition and chromatic aberration were just night and day better. One would obviously expect the latest fixed focal length lens to trump an older zoom, but I was blown away by how great the difference was and the fact that I could even see it as soon as I glanced at my camera LCD. I was also pleasantly surprised at the heft, given the reviews which made it sound so delicate. It feels solidly made given the materials and is a lot nicer to hand-hold for longer periods than my beloved 80-200 tank. The focus ring, whilst not as good as that on the zoom, also has much better dampening than I was expecting. Great product, great price. More like this please Nikon!

Amazing Lens!!

from South Florida  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I am a semi-pro photographer (it isn't my full time job, but I have been doing this professionally for 5 years). I used to own the 85mm 1.4 (the previous generation) but sold it because it seemed to always have focusing issues, was heavy, and wasn't being used much. I decided to buy the 85mm 1.8 when it went on sale so that I could have a longer prime lens in my arsenal. I could not be happier with this purchase. This lens has become my favorite go-to lens for portraits. It is always on my camera now. The bokeh that this lens creates is out of this world. It is extremely sharp and light-weight. You cannot get a better value for the quality of this lens at this price. If you are on the fence, just GET IT! It will change your photography.

Sorry I waited

from Twin Cities  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I've been making do with just a single prime - Nikon's 50mm f1.4 - while covering my other needs with zooms for their obvious flexibility. But with the rebate I finally opted to order an 85, and I'm utterly smitten. Impressive AF, excellent bokeh, remarkable clarity, and the lens just feels right riding my D610 - balanced in such a way that you want to hold it up to your eye. WIth the benefit of hindsight I should have given in to the urge to buy this lens much, much sooner.

So good, I will not buy a 1.4

from Wilmington, NC  -  Pro Photographer

So good, it's hard to justify buying the 1.4g. This lens currently produces the best color & sharpness out of any other lens I have used in the nikon line up. Scary sharp! See more photos at www.photosbykristopher.com

85mm f/1.8G AF-S FX Nikkor Lens

from Boston, MA  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought this lens to use with my DX-format D40 and FX-format N80. I needed a fast portrait lens with AF and metering, hence the choice. From a very limited testing so far, I can say this is a great addition to my bag of lenses. I mostly own manual focus older lenses, they work well, but this lens renders many of them useless. Being primarily a FX lens, it offers a good set of features for a DX camera: first, despite of its relatively large diameter compared to standard DX lenses, it fits small D40 body perfectly, not blocking any essential spots like built-in flash; it has an ability of manual focusing in AF mode, and as only the central part of the image is projected on the sensor, it is free from vingetting and extremely sharp. On DX, it behaves as 127-135mm lens, which is slightly longer than an ideal portrait focal length but I found it can be used for portraits from 7-8 feet distance. At f/1.8, its DOF is very shallow, so a tripod may be needed for proper focusing. It also lacks VR feature that is more important for DX-format camera but again the tripod should solve this. Overall, this is a very good purchase, and I would recommend this lens.
