Is the HB 63 supposed to be secure?

Yes, the HB 63 lens hood is supposed to be secure, but it, and the lens cap, are both poorly designed. You have to take extra precaution to make certain that they are secure when you put them in place.
It is also disappointing that the lens, as it turns out, is "grey market," which means that Nikon will not repair it if it is damaged. I found that out after I fell with the camera and damaged the lens.
After many years of doing business with Adorama, I was surprised that the company had not forewarned me about the implications of "grey market" products.
I am also disappointed with the lens because, unlike any other Nikon lens I have used in 40 years of using Nikon products, this one has a lot of darkness in the image corners when the lens is at its wider focal lengths.
I'll think a lot before I buy any other Nikon cameras or lenses.
