About Nikon SB300

Nikon SB-300 AF Speedlight
Take control of the lighting around you with this compact Speedlight for D-SLRs and accessory-shoe equipped COOLPIX cameras. Find new inspiration: use the 120° tilting head to bounce the flash off a nearby wall or ceiling (bounce flash), eliminate unwanted shadows on your subject (fill-flash) or illuminate a poorly lit scene with a soft, balanced light tailored to your shot.

Lighting simplicity
The right lighting can transform an everyday shot into an extraordinary memory. Even if your camera has a pop-up flash, an external Speedlight provides capabilities and control that every shooter can appreciate so much more than simply illuminating a dimly lit scene. The compact, lightweight SB-300 AF Speedlight makes it easier than ever to harness the power of a Nikon Speedlight. With its simple operation, excellent performance and approachable price tag, theSB-300 AF Speedlight belongs in the camera bag of every D-SLR or accessory-shoe equipped COOLPIX owner. Take control of the lighting around you.

Soft, balanced lighting with fill-flash and tilt capabilities
With the SB-300 AF Speedlight, you'll enjoy a flash that's soft and balanced for excellent color, skin tones and lighting throughout your entire composition not just on your main subject. Use it in bright situations to fill in unwanted shadows (fill-flash), or use its 120° tilt capability to bounce your flash off the ceiling or a nearby wall for even softer, less direct lighting on your subject (bounce technique).

Lighting tailored to each shot
Nikon's i-TTL (intelligent Through-The-Lens) flash coverage technology tailors the characteristic of the flash to the shot. An imperceptible pre-flash fires milliseconds before the main flash to gather information about the scene shadow areas, subject distance and reflectance. Your i-TTL capable camera and the SB-300 AF Speedlight then work together to achieve the best exposure and white balance setting possible, all in a fraction of a second.

The Nikon SB300 is popular because customers like the following qualities of the Nikon SB300: Easy to use and Lightweight

Nikon SB300 Features

  • The flash head can be tilted up 120° for excellent bounce flash performance: When shootingindoors, light from the flash can be reflected off walls and ceilings for softerlighting of the subject and more natural photos.
  • A compact and lightweight design that is extremely portable: the compact and lightweight, extremely portable design makesit possible for users to enjoy more creative lighting expression just about anywhere. Furthermore, the SB-300 can be powered by AAA alkaline batteries or AAA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries.
  • Simple operation: Developed for use by even those using an external flash for the first time, simply turning the SB-300 on enables flash photography. i-TTL flash control provides automatic control over flash output level for optimal results under a variety of lighting conditions.
  • Guide number: 18/59 (ISO 100, m/ft)
  • FV lock function: with which flash volume is determined based on monitor flashes and saved so that composition may be changed while maintaining the flash value (not supported by D5200, D5100, D5000, D3200, D3100, D3000, D60, or D40-series cameras; among COOLPIX cameras, only supported by the COOLPIX A)
  • Flash color temperature information communication: transmits flash color temperature information to the camera for optimal white balance control when a digital-SLR camera is used.

When you need just a little more light

Very light Perfect for travel Easy to use It's not designed to replace my SB-910

Small and powerful

First off, I actually prefer popup flash on my camera - it's easy to turn on and off, and it gives the most natural fill light in my opinion. This flash to me was brighter than my sb600! It was too harsh. It did turn on off and recycle quickly. It does not rotate or allow you to do anything other than fire flash from 2 inches higher than the popup. I needed wide angle lens coverage and this fixed that, but it was too bright so I returned it.

SB300

By

I absolutely loved my SB300 speed flash. All my pictures came out super crisp, and really brought new life into my photos. Unfortunately Christmas night a year and a couple days after the flash had been purchased it stopped working completely. Very disappointing, all my other Nikkon equipment has held up so well.

Great little flash

By

I bought this flash for my Nikon P7100 compact so that I could use bounce flash. It only tilts for a horizontal photo. It doesn't swivel for a vertical photo. When I want to shoot a vertical, I shoot as a horizontal and then crop it as a vertical. It works very well. I also use the SB-300 as a travel light flash. I throw it in my bag instead of my bigger heavier SB-600.

Questions about this item:

donna jean m  I'm looking for another flash to put at an angle to eliminate shadows behind my subject in the studio. I was a medium format pro and no longer use film I retired so I thought, but customers keep hounding me to shoot them. So I am trying to get back into this part time, but when I shoot theres this one shadow I can't seem to get rid of. it's behind the subject, and my studio lights don't help with dslr. so would this be the answer to my needs without spending a fortunate?
MICHAEL E. H  Donna, I do not shoot portraits but was looking for a more powerful flash than the one the camera supplies. I was impressed with how much light this flash produced. Of course, I do not know how you are going to mount or use this. Anyway, this flash has done a good job for me.
donna jean m  I purchased the sb 700 for the camera, but there's this shadow to the side of the subject and nothing I seem to do works..someone said try my speedotron I have a brown 3 light but I don't think I can connect this to the nikon d610? I'm waiting to hear from speedotron, but I was thinking putting this on a portable stand and shine it at a 45 degree angle and that would eliminate the shadow? sorry I didn't seem to explain myself well
