Great Walk Around Lens

Great all around lens. Size, weight, and focal length coverage are a good compromise when you can only take one lens with you. F-stop is adequate; everyone wants a lower f-stop but then you will be spending more and carrying around a bigger, heavier lens. Auto focus is actually very quick and accurate for a Pentax. Weather sealing makes it worry free on on wet or dusty hikes - it rains here a lot. Lens has a solid feel to it. Great Pentax color. Image quality is not as sharp as lenses that co...

Image quality is not as sharp as lenses that cost twice as much (like a DA* lens); but then they cost twice as much. Image quality is still very good. I have been shooting with it for 6 months; very happy with it.

Not what I hoped for

For the price and after some of the reviews I've read, I expected better from Pentax. The tests and images I've taken so far show noticeable vignetting -especially with white backgrounds- and noticeable PF from 18-55 and noticeable CA from 55-135. The resolution and image quality is actually poorer than the kit SMC 18-55 DA II that came with my k200D. My old Vivitar zooms have better resolution and the Vivitar 75-205 close focus shows no PF and slight CA in comparison. My $5 Sears135 f/2.8 pr...

The resolution and image quality is actually poorer than the kit SMC 18-55 DA II that came with my k200D. My old Vivitar zooms have better resolution and the Vivitar 75-205 close focus shows no PF and slight CA in comparison. My $5 Sears135 f/2.8 produces equal, if not slightly better, quality images. Images at 135 are disappointingly softer than the Vivitars or Sears, but are still usable. I really expected a lot better. If it wasn't for the weather resistant construction and fantastic fast/quiet focus, I'd return it. I haven't compared it to any other 18-135 or similar ranges to be absolutely fair. I'm keeping it because it is WR and a great range for a walk around kit lens. Don't get me wrong. It still takes nice looking images, but the quality in the little details disappoints me.

Excellent Weather Resistant Lens

By

from Connecticut, USA  -  Getting Started

I bought this lens to go along with my Pentax K30 for the weather resistant feature. I am loving this lens. I can take the lens out while walking the dog in all weather. I am a "newbie" photographer, but I am interested in tack sharp photos. Despite my beginner status, I have some lovely, sharp looking photos of snow on evergreen trees and my local park. Shout out to Pentax for offering a great product, weather sealed, at a reasonable (for photography hobby anyway) price!

Excellent lens

By

from Seattle, WA  -  Photo Enthusiast

It's weather sealed, auto-focus is fast and quiet. 18-135 range is fantastic for an all around lens. About the only thing this lens isn't good for is moving subjects in low light. If it was an F/2.8, or faster, it'd be perfect but would also cost WAY more. I am very happy with this lens. This lens is really heavy. It seems to weigh nearly as much as the K5ii.

Nice Little Lens

By

from Webster, TX  -  Photo Enthusiast

I had read some negative reviews of this lens, primarily in its optics, but I've found the optics more than good enough - certainly good enough for most of the things I want to do with it. The built-in DC motor makes focusing very quiet, and it's pretty quick on my K-30. It's small and compact, with a nice, solid feel. All in all, pretty close to perfect for a travel lens. It may not have a constant f/2.8 aperture, but no zoom lens with as wide a zoom ratio as this ever will.

very good lens not the sharpest lens in the bag, but that is the only knock against it. Very good general lens weather resistant with an amazing build quality puts all but expensive lenses to shame..

Pentax SMCP-DA 18mm - 135mm f/3.5-5.6 AL

By

from British Columbia, CA  -  Pro Photographer

I purchased this lens with the Pentax K-30 as a run around camera/lens that I didn't have to worry about on the beach, paddleboarding, etc. Like it a lot, especially the weatherproofing. Easy to understand and use. I chose the white/black model and love the look of it. For sure this combination is not as sharp as what I'm used to with Nikon pro lenses/D3s but I didn't purchase it to use for my business, I wanted something that wasn't heavy and was small enough to fit in my purse at all times. I prefer dslr's to point and shoot and this is a small fun camera to use - video is easy to use too!

Great Lens for overall use

By

from SC

This is great lens. Definitely more bells and whistles than a kit lens and pretty versatile. Do I wish it was a 2.8, sure. but it is decent at 3.5 wide open and I find that slowing the shutter down a bit compensates pretty well. Takes really nice pictures.

Great walk around lens

Great all around lens. Quick focus. Decent range from wide angle to telephoto. Fast enough to freeze action and clear enough for just about any shot.

Good all around lens

By

from Aurora Colorado  -  Casual Photographer

This lens is fairly heavy making it a challenge at times to hold still especially with slower shutter speeds. Rarely I got some blurred shots but I suspect it was camera shake and not the lens itself. It is a good lens that truly does the job. I purchased it with my K-5 as an upgrade over the kit lens. It is a good fit.
