Great all-around lens!

What's not to like? Mounted on my new Pentax K500 allows me to use this lens exclusively for more than general shooting. The auto-focus is fine, quick and quiet.

Better...and worse

from Virginia Beach, VA  -  Photo Enthusiast

The extended plastic tubes echo the shutter click of a K-5 as if it were a toy lens. It can feel and sound like a much cheaper lens in spite of the silent AF drive. However, I found the optics, especially when fully extended, to exceed my expectations. Unless I had plans to heavily crop or print 13x19 I would have no problem shooting with this lens for most any outdoor events (birding excepted) or indoor with extra lighting. I was delighted to find the lens lock is not needed as there is no lens creep, even jumping up and down...hope it stays that way. The focus speed is quite acceptable, precise and silent. However when at its maximum focal length the AF often fails in poor light. Until now the Pentax DA 18-135mm WR lens has been my walk in the woods companion but unless its precipitating, the 18-270mm will start making the walks. Overall I am pleased with the color and center sharpness at all focal lengths, and the zoom range compensates for the lack of solid feel that I found with the DA 18-135mm.

Questions about this item:

Kum K  Can I use the lens for Pentax KR?
JEFFREY H  Sprry I don't have a pentax kr. The lense works great on K-5
Shopper  Is it weather resistant and dust proofed?
Andrew R  Unfortunately no, Pentax does not indicate that this lens has been dust proofed or made weather resistant.
Tammy C  I was thinking of replacing my 50-200mm zoom with this lens for travelling with my pentax k-x. I like the portability of just having to take one lens for my travel photos. Is this too much lens for k-k? Would I be better off with the 18-135mm. I've heard mixed reviews online and could use some advice. I am still a beginner with DSLR. I have an 18-55 lens that came with the kit and I use it most of the time, however, for travel - where close ups are taken along with distance scenery, I prefer having the range to do both with one lens. Suggestions?
LOUIS C  I purchased this lens after using a 55 - 300 zoom which limited closer shots. I had a friend who recently bought similar lens for his Nikon and talked me into it. I plan on now taking my one camera with this lens to our Vietnam trip this fall so I do not have to take both of my cameras like I did on my China trip and Germany trip. Have enjoyed it thus far in getting closer shots as well as long range shots. Happy with my purchase thus far.
