About Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Mirrorless

The Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC Lens for Micro Four Thirds Mount is a manual focus, manual aperture telephoto prime lens with a focal length equivalent to 170mm in the 35mm format. It is ideal for portraiture and other telephoto applications. Its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is very effective in low light situations and provides shallow depth of field focus.

An aspherical lens element aids in the reduction of aberrations and UMC multi-layer coating minimizes flare and ghosting and contributes to overall sharp imaging. The lens offers a minimum focus distance of 3.3', its filter thread diameter is 72mm and included with the lens is a bayonet-type lens hood that deflects unwanted light and protects the lens from damage.

What a bargain!

I've always wanted an 85MM lens for my Olympus DSLR but there simply hasn't been anything in that focal length. Now there is the m4/3 75MM f1.8, but it's close to $1000 with a lens hood. I was worried this lens would be soft or cheaply made, but even wide open it is sharp enough. Shooting at f1.4 I wouldn't expect any lens to be razor sharp (except maybe my Pan-Leica 25MM), but this is more than sharp enough. My main purpose in buying this lens was for portraits, but it's great for other purposes as well. It's well made with nice smooth focusing and a solid feel. It's a little big and heavy on a m4/3 body (I have an E-M1), but I thought it balanced well and was never aware of its weight or bulk while shooting. I have much bigger and heavier lenses that I use on the E-M1. The five stars take into consideration the price of this lens. I'm sure the Zuiko 75MM 1.8 is better, but I wonder if it is 3 times better. I doubt it.
