I bought a Canon factory refurbushed copy of this camera. First, out of the box this camera appears to be as new and fresh as a non-refurb. Best of all, it has been individually and carefully tested by Canon. Basically a new camera at a great price .... perhaps better than new in that any QC issues have been taken care of.
I have tested this cam for AF, and can say that as far as I can tell it performs perfectly. In other words, I can to my satisfaction attribute any OOF's to me. The camera is far more sensitive that the 5D I traded up from, but far more capable as well. The learning curve was not to great, and many new doors have been opened.
My images have improved as a result, and while the 5D is a great cam as well, the IQ from the MkIII is superior in many ways. PP options are also improved: images respond better IMHO, especially to sharpening, and overall are better.
Yes it is heavy ... and noticable. While I'm OK with weight, I'm thinking of getting a small body as for travel ... not just weight, but when you don't want to stand out too much ... your gear that is.
Any Canon lens owner looking at the D700 should look at this cam as well. And if you don't see the new 5D Mk II as fitting your needs regarding AF, you might also take a look at the Mk III.
I cannot even begin to tell yo how fast it is. I got it today, put on my old 70-200 2.8L IS lens and took it to the beach where my brother was skimboarding. Several times when I wasn't paying attention, I caught my brother doing tricks. I would throw the camera up to my face and just squeeze the button. I thought sooner or later, after a few frames, the focus would catch up to the incredible 10 frames per second. I took a bit over 600 photos... I knew lots would be out of focus. Imagine my surprise when I arrived home, popped the CF card into the computer, imported the pics into lightroom and found... 3 OOF. My god... that is simply amazing!
I use both Nikon and Canon... have gravitated more towards Canon over the past few years. Even with the new D3 out, I still think the 1D Mark III is tough to beat. This camera is simply amazing.

I use this camera in very harsh conditions, it never fails me. The images are clean and the colour perfect, which cuts down time wasted processing the raw files.
The camera is blindingly fast. There are so many custom features that its a problem setting up in the beginning,, but a blessing when you get used to it. This camera has a steep learning curve.
I wouldnt recommend it to anyone but an advance amatuer or pro. Its a lot of camera to deal with and requires knowing exactly what you are doing.
Its not a toy for happy snaps
Exceptional machine!! Fast, accurate focus; low noise, very solid build, brilliant colors. Overall exceptional image quality. I have been shooting 20D and 5D and have experienced no problems moving to the 1DMIII. Very similar controls. I am not a pro so I might not have the critical eye (or needs) of a pro shooter. 10fps is almost frightening the first time you press the shutter :-) Very excited about ISO auto adjustment in custom functions, this should really help in fast paced shooting in changing light to reduce camera shake. I am still working my way through the manual, there are so many opportunities to customize this camera to specific situations. I have shot mostly with my 24-105 f4.0 and it is a great compliment to this camera. Looking forward to some action shots with the 70-200 f2.8 IS, that should be really sweet. The 16-35 f2.8 is not quite as ultra-wide as on the full frame 5D but still a very nice wide angle (about equivalent to 21mm on the 5D). At this early stage of the game I just could not be more pleased with this truely fine camera.
I waited until I felt that the problems surrounding the MK III would be settled....Now I am a very happy camper! You won't be disappointed.
This is an awesome camera with solid construction and very intuitive controls. The picture quality is superb, fits in your hand like a glove and it also loves the fast 2.8 lenses.
there is no camera better suited for wedding photography, it's fast, durable, water resistant and with the new highlight priority mode does not overexpose the highlights, which is really usefull for the white wedding dress.
This is an outstanding camera - came from the 1d/20d/5d and the 1dmk111 is in a class bt itself
A bit expensive, but well worth the money

Accept facts. If you want to make friends with the Mark III, you HAVE to go through the AF menu and personalize it to match your needs. If you do so, the camera is phenomenal! With low light, fast action photography, I'm not thrilled with the performance of aperture or shutter speed mode, but using manual settings gives one incredible photographs. I cannot image any camera available being comparable.
If you are not a very serious photographer, don't buy this camera. It will frustrate you. But if you are willing to engage in the learning curve of the new AF system, this camera is worth far more that its current price.
Used for NCAA level sports photography.
Pros; Awesome speed, solid construction, excellent battery life and battery size.
Incredible AF system (once I began to understand how it differs from the Mark II N).
Very customizable (almost to a fault).
Cons; The ongoing AF debate has cost me a lot of time testing the new AF System to see if I have a defective body or if I'm doing something wrong with the way I'm using the camera or setting it up. If this issue didn't exist I'd rate it 5 stars.
Nonetheless the technology is very impressive.
This camera body is lighter than my Canon 5D with battery grip. I love it's speed and fast focus. Although it would fire sometime without getting the proper focus in low light situations. The larger LCD is definitely a plus.

It is a great camera pictures are great.
Has so many features that you need to go through a learning curve and pay close attention to all the features available. The live video feature is particularly interesting.I am not a professional, but the camera controls seem intuitive and easy to learn.

First of all, I've had the camera for only a little bit over a week.
The Mark III is one of the best cameras in the world and probably one of the most complex. It has 57 custom functions that should be reviewed by any serious photographer to ensure it is set for your style of shooting, subject and environment.
At first I was overwhelmed as my previous camera was a Canon 20d. This camera is capable of so much it's insane. If you take the time to learn it, it will reward you.
I've shot a fast moving 5 year old on a playground as well as Single A baseball and it has performed incredibly well in AI Servo High speed fps mode, contrary to many of the articles written on the web. I should also mention, I was using it in 95 degree heat. Previous web articles reported autofocus issues in those situations.
The focus navigation system can be tricky at first, as two dials are necessary to navigate. However, with a little practice it's easy to quickly get to the desired one of 19 focus points.
Exposure, White Balance (AWB), and image quality are outstanding. The HighSpeed 10FPS is for real. Pack a large memory card, as you will rip large amounts of images quickly. The viewfinder is extremely bright. A real pleasure to use and quite exciting. Biggest drawback is that it's heavy.
I love this camera, and though I've only owned and used it several times this past week, it has greatly exceeded my expectations of a digital SLR and lived up to all the positive Canon hype that proceeded it.

Image quality is superb. Focus, well, I'm still experimenting with that one to determine if it's me or the camera.
I just covered a 2-day pro sport event right after receiving the camera in the mail + it was great camera to test in real conditions. It quickly became the primary camera for covering the event.
-The many user selectable settings for the AF came very handy. It took some fiddling around to get the right settings however.
-Somewhat of a con is the missing of a directory switch from the image review quick button. You have to go the menu, go to right tab, select dir, exit and then go back to the image review. The same to go back to original directory.
