This is a great starter setup. I had limited knowledge of DSLR capabilities and so I went with the kit lens. the 18-55mm lens is great especially with the Image Stabilization, but for travel purposes, I quickly realized that I would need a compact lens with more zoom range. I went with a Tamron AF 28-200mm XR lens and have had great success. The best advice i can give is get the kit if you are new to DSLR's and experiment. What is good for one photographer is not always good for another. This kit has a great range of possibilities and the price is superb. The only way to know that this camera was refurbished was the packaging and the stickers that said refurb on the camera. There were no scratches and everything works flawlessly. As far as a lens upgrade I would suggest to buy the kit and sell the lens later if you feel you need an upgrade.

This is my first Canon and now I know what I have been missing.Sleep mode that is instantly ready to shoot,using very little battery and capturing every possible shot,birds will not wait for your camera.I'm still discovering new features as I shoot and learn.I truly enjoy this camera.
