Plenty of manual settings and noise levels are excellent up to ISO 800. Good camera, for a 1st DSLR camera buyer, but some necessary features are missing for the more serious among us. As most of my shots are outdoor/wildlife, I believe Canon have left out some important features on this camera.
1. No matrix grid overlay to line up architecture and outdoor water horizons such as sunrise/sunsets etc. This means you have to guess the horizon level through the small viewfinder/lcd screen, which is almost impossible. (Check it on your PC) IMHO this is a important feature left out, (also Rebel XTi), which is included on most point and shoot digital cameras, including Canon models.
2. There is no dedicated spot metering system. The 7 point AF system falls down badly, when for example, trying to focus on small creatures in a canopy. Most times the shot will be blurred with the AF metering focusing on a nearer object, branch, twig etc. I know you can select locking or tracking AF modes independently, but that is far from simple and satisfactory, (by then you have missed the shot) compared to a selectable independant spot metering mode.
3. It is possible to forget and leave the camera off/on switch left on, as no light elerts you of this. The newer model Rebel XTi (Aka EOS 400D) has this important feature to remind you.
This is a great camera and takes excellent shots, with good colour rendition and low noise levels. For most photographers, taking family/close ups/sports etc. it is fine. In my case, I am a avid outdoor photo enthusiast and a lot of my finished shots have been disappointing. This is probably the first negative report on the Rebel XT, but everybody should be aware of the cameras short comings, as well as its good points.
I hope Adorama allows this review, in fairness to all opinions, as it appears that 99% of all reviewers find no fault with this model.

It's a great camera for the casual photographer who wants more lens options and control over a Point and shoot. If you plan to get really serious about photography you might want to spend a little more on a better model. I plan to use mine as a backup when I get my 5D.

I previously used the Powershot Pro 1 which had the digic 1 image sensor. I wasn't too impressed with the quality of the Pro 1 because the noise level was the same as my older point and shoot canon. When I got the Rebel XT I was thrilled with the new Digic 2 sensor. The noise level is 1/5 what it was with the digic 1. Oh, and the camera has all that I need for becoming a better photographer. It performed perfectly during my trip to Rome.

Great camera, quick shots, great resolution, many editing options.
I was very excited to find a digital SLR in the 'prosumer' price & quality range. Instead of buying the kit with the 18-55mm lens, I opted to buy the Canon EF 28-135mm IS lens. I haven't been able to purchase any other lens as of yet, so my review is only based on the camera's performance with the 28-135mm lens. The only con I have about it, is that the photos appear brighter on the LCD than the actual exposure when you view & print the photos from the computer. But, if you can take that into account & monitor your histograms, it's not that big of a deal. I love that fact that the Rebel will shoot in RAW format, and has many of the features you will find on the level up professional Canon models, such as the EOS 10D (which was my first experience using a D-SLR). I mostly shoot for hobby, taking alot of photos around the house, of my cats and flowers/nature, etc. I find that the quality of the photos is excellent. I like that you can adjust the sharpness, and color saturation; and you can also shoot in black & white and sepia with color tints. It has a lot of nice special features to play with. I have a smaller frame and found that the Rebel was the perfect size for me. My husband also uses it sometimes, and he's never complained that it was too small for him. The built-in flash is as good as any, as far as built-in flash goes. I have not been able to purchase an external flash yet, but I prefer to use natural/ambient light as much as possible anyway. I do run into some trouble in low-light situations when I don't want to use the built-in flash, such as getting slightly blurry photos, but I feel that's because my lens isn't fast enough, and not a downfall of the acutal camera. I hope to be able to purchase a wider faster lens in the future. Also,I would recommend purchasing a card reader- it makes downloading time much quicker. I also liked the smaller battery size and found that the battery life was excellent. Overall I am happy that I purchased the Rebel XT, and would recommend it to others. (I have not used the newer XTi model yet, so I don't know if it much different than the XT...)

[...]The Rebel XT was all and more then I thought it would be, the black body has that professional look. I'm still learning about all the features the XT has but in the auto mode it has not disappointed me one bit.
Images shared by: Big KielbasaGreat camera for the price. Markings are a bit hard to read on black body, especially in low light
Met expectations ,good backup camera for the price.
easy to use
Still happy with my XT and lenses after several months. Great camera for the money [...]
I did not realize just how much better this camera is than the Digital Rebel I had previously. It is very fast starting up so you can take pictures very quickly.

I love how fast the autofocus is, especially since I photograph lots of fast moving kids. I can't seem to get vibrant colors without processing in Photoshop which has been a bit disappointing. Overall, an excellent camera.

Very supprised with all the options and capabilities. Seems to meet all my needs>
The only drawback to this camera is the size of the display on the back. The 10 megapixel model has a larger one, which would be an advantage. However, this camera is probably the better value, as the 10 megapixel model is significantly more expensive.
There are a couple of features that need to be turned off the LCD screen but it get complicated.
They made it easier in the XTI (D400) model but that doesn't fix it in the XT, so spend the extra money, you'll be happier.
on automatic settings, i still have trouble with blurry action photos in low light.
This is the third digital rebel for me. I have had the 6meg and the 8meg so a natural transition into the new 10meg XTi. I bought this one because of the good experiences I've had with the first two. Love canon cameras they are quality products and have so many good lenses
available

Great digital SLR with 3 fps shooting and excellent quality. I have made great 11" x 16" photos and exhibited them. The price is amazing for the photo quality.
MORE THAN MET EXPECTSTIONS
Great camera and excellent quality - wide range of lenses and accessories add to the flexibility of this camera
I love this camera. It takes great pictures and is a manageable size and weight to carry around. I have not used all the special features but the basic features are just great! I don't always get the best low light pictures but I don't use the special features that would probably make a difference. My outdoor pictures in particular are fantastic!
Only problem is under exposure when using flash-doesn't help even when using 420 flash
This is a great camera! I took pictures of my grandson at our campsite with the only lighting coming from the campfire (1' flames) and the flash. My daughter-in-law said it was professional quality--sharp details, saw the tiny hairs on his face, and veins on his forehead! Very easy to use--just remember to turn the knob if you change from portrait to landscape, etc.

It was between this or the xti. I decided to go with this 1 and save about $200. I have shot night time football games, dances, portraits, skateboarding, and many many other things. This camera never fails me and always meets what I throw at it.
This is an excellent camera. It has met my expectations. My only compaint is that the screen could be easier to see in daylight.
I need a good wide angle lense now
I have always like Canon products and this Rebel just reinforces my opinion.
1.6 isn't good for lens under 50mm do the figureing with your lens before you buy a camera. Your wideset lens is as wide as you thought on this camera or just about all of them. Full Frame camera is years saving for most. And they can or will quit you too.

This camera gave me very good photos on my recent trip to Alaska, even though I didn't really have time to work with it before I left. The "automatic" setting came through in a variety of situations. I would still like to have the appropriate hot shoe flash to work with for better low light photos.
Great first DSLR
Very nice camera for everyone. Really delivers high quality pictures. My only dislikes are the features I'll (and most people) will never use. Canon could have spent the money elsewhere and made the camera slightly more rugged. Still I'd recommend this camera to anyone.
My first camera was a Canon AE1 that I still have and use at times and will not part with. The AE1 is well over 20yrs old and still produces good pictures.
When I first looked at the Rebel XT the
Salesman was very knowledgable when the camera was explained to me.
This camera has given me the confidence to start a Landscape Photography business.
