This is a great little camera. I've enjoyed kicking around with it! Especially for the cost of it- Under $1k for a digital SLR? And 8MP isn't a bad thing...
No, it's not the most advanced or one I'd recommend as a pro's rig, but it's a fun little camera that is very versatile. It's a great step up for the person that wants just that little bit more from their photos than you can get from a point and shoot.
Just don't get that kit lens! Buy the body by itself, spend a few more bucks and get a nice lens. Trust me. You'll have better pictures. :)
And, hey- if and when you outgrow it, you can upgrade to a bigger body. All of Canon's new cameras use the same mount and are interchangeable to other bodies.
If you put a good prime lens on it, you can take some nice landscapes or portraits. If you put a good zoom on it, then it's great for sports and vacations.
The only thing I don't like about it is it's not full-frame. It's has the same aspect ratio as film, but it's a smaller view. Hence, your 28mm lens is suddenly more like a 45mm. But, you're going to get that with any consumer SLR so that shouldn't be a deterrent if you're shopping in this range.
I will say this: I should have saved up for a more advanced camera. I could be considered an advanced armature/ almost pro and I'm going to outgrow this camera pretty quickly. So, if you've been shooting with a good film SLR and are thinking of going digital, you might want to step up to a 30D, 40D or even a 5D if you have the cash. The 30/ 40 will have the smaller view, but they are more advanced cameras and the 5D has the full-frame sensor.
But, even so, I have not regretted the purchase at all! It takes great pictures and is a true-blue Canon!

I have had my Rebel XT for 4 years now and have never had any kind of trouble with it at all.
Very fast start up, easy to use and learn controls and it takes wonderful pictures. If you want to see pictures taken with the Rebel XT there are millions on flickr.

had unreliable experiences with it being underexposed periodicly. same settings an hour later in same lighting conditions would work.
