Better image quality under mediocre to poor lighting than other cameras I have used with a Small Sensor.
Decision to buy this camera based on the VERY useful flip out viewing screen, plus having a viewfinder when needed.
Even though this is a back up camera to a DSLR, I do not hesitate to use it where the bigger camera is obtrusive, and expect good results for internet and small print usage.
Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
This is a great camera if you are starting to experiment with photography. It almost all of the features that a DSLR will have, without the price tag. Best thing is, if you love it and want to expand on to pricier equipment, this camera will still serve as a great travel option as it is very compact. Several great photographers I know have mentioned to me that this is the camera they carry with them while traveling when they do not want to lug around their camera bags and lenses.
Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
Not easy trying to replace my classic ( $1000.00) PowerShot Pro-1 with L glass and SLR features. The G-11 comes close. Very compact and easy to use. I get about 500 shots out of the hefty proprietary battery and the recharge is fast. The image quality is very crisp and pleasing. The zoom is a bit limited in range, and the shutter lag can be annoyingly slow during flash use. Otherwise a great camera for a reasonable price.

The ease of Canon G11 made it fun to use! I'm a huge Canon enthusiast, I enjoy that it fits my skin as well as my Canon 50D, I love that the programs are the same. The Canon G11 is a must have for those spur of the moment shots when you want to just snap & giggle and have fun!

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
Background:
I shoot a wide variety of subjects such as portraits, landscapes, sports, architecture, still lifes, macro, weddings and other social events.
I shoot film (35mm small format, 6x9cm medium format and 4x5 inch large format).
I also shoot three types of digital cameras: an APS-sized SLR, a compact, and a point & shoot. I use the SLR and a large inventory of lenses to shoot just about anything. I use the compact primarily for shooting candids, travel shots, still life, and close-ups; however, it also serves as a backup to my SLR. I carry the small P&S in my pocket so that I am never without a camera.
I purchased the G11 as an upgrade for my two aging Canon G5 digital compacts.
Comparisons:
My Canon G11 works well with other cameras in the following situations:
1. Theatre--The G11 (and the G5) and my digital SLR are very compatible for shooting theatre. When I need to shoot quiet scenes, I use the silent G11. When I need to shoot beyond the focal length range of the G11, I use the SLR.
2. Golf--While standing within ear range of the golfer; the SLR while standing farther away.
3. Landscape--For shooting test shots and the medium format film camera for taking the actual shot.
4. Still Life--For shooting the test shots and the film camera for taking the actual shot.
5. Action--For general shooting while the SLR shoots the long shots.
6. Pinhole--For shooting test shots, then the medium format or large format pinhole film camera takes the actual shot.
7. Weddings--G11 shoots the available light candids and the digital SLR or medium format film camera shoots the posed flash shots.
8. Backup--G11 serves as a backup to my digital SLR, my film SLR, or my medium format film cameras.
9. Action Events--G11 set up in one location to capture motion picture; G5 set up in another location to capture still shots at intervals, digital SLR used to take action shots.
My G11 is better than my digital SLR when I need to...
1. Shoot quietly.
2. Shoot overhead shots.
3. Shoot at ground level.
4. Shoot at waist level.
5. Shoot close-ups using a tripod
6. Shoot still life using a tripod
7. Shoot without drawing much attention.
8. Shoot movies (my SLR does not do movies).
9. Shoot with image stabilization (I do not yet have this feature for my SLR).
10. Carry a light photographic load.
11. Compose using the LCD.
12. Keep my digital sensor free of dirt, dust, and debris.
13. Avoid vibrations due to mirror slap.
14. Blend in with the tourists.
My digital SLR is better than my G11 when I need to...
1. Be prepared to shoot any type of subject.
2. Project a professional image.
3. Shoot fast moving subjects.
4. Shoot with a high firing rate.
5. Shoot with longer focal lengths.
6. Shoot with wider focal lengths.
7. Shoot with faster lenses.
8. Shoot with a fisheye lens.
9. Shoot with lenses that have less optical defects such as barreling.
10. Shoot hand-held at eye-level
11. Shoot long timed exposures.
12. Shoot with perspective control.
13. Shoot with more depth-of-field control.
14. Shoot in the macro reproductive range of 1:1 to 12:1
15. Shoot with a radio controlled remote flash unit and the camera flash provides the fill light.
My Canon G11 is better than my Canon G5 except when I need to...
1. Shoot with an f/2 lens.
2. Shoot at ISO 50.
3. Use an interval timer.
4. Use 52mm filters.
My Canon G11 is better than my point & shoot camera except when I need to...
1. Shoot without thinking.
2. Carry a small photographic load in my pants' pocket.
3. Be totally ignored as a photographer.
Comments:
The only reason I cannot give this camera a perfect rating is that I am reserving that rating for my ideal compact camera. The G11, however, does come close to my ideal. My ideal is a Canon G11 that has been ergonomically designed, has interchangeable lenses, has a rangefinder for focusing manually, and has the manufacturing quality of a Leica MP 35mm rangefinder.
If my ideal camera does not spring into existence soon, I will probably buy a second G11.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
The G-11 is a very good camera. But, the lag time between button pushing and the camera reacting/shooting the image is considerable, especially in low-light. You really need to be pre-cog at times to get the image you want. Also, if you need the automatic setting, it does not work in RAW mode.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
There are times when I need a small camera which can fit in a coat pocket when I don't want to haul my bulky equipment. I still want the option to enlarge photos without noise if I come across a great opportunity. I also want an optical view finder for situations where the LCD is hard to see (when the sun is behind you). The G11 fills that nitch. There are dials for ISO & exposure adjustments which are much quicker that working through an LCD menu. There are some adjustment buttons on the rear of the camera which can be acidentally pushed. You will have to be conscious of that.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
As a former event photographer, I had a lot of small and medium format equipment piling up. Now that I use photography as documentation (for my personal/professional use), I decided I didn't need to have the myriad of supplies. Sold everything and got this camera (very recently)so I'm still checking everything out. Overall, I'm incredibly happy with it...relatively intuitive which is why I like Canon; better quality and features than my micro Elph (which I still look forward to using as my pocket-sized device); and I think it will be perfect for documenting my artworks for my website and print, travel, and the baby that we are expecting.
My only complaints thus far: buttons on back (upper right-hand side) are easy to accidentally press with the right thumb as you grip the camera. AND the strap that is included might as well be a razor blade (very sharp edges that I don't want anywhere near my skin...so I bought a neoprene stretch strap and will also consider a wrist strap that fits with an adaptor).

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
Out of all my canon point and shoot cameras I will choose the G11 if it is a important picture and I have to get it right. The ISO from 80 to 800 is very good, I even have alot of keepers at 1600 iso. I use a wrist strap instead of the neck strap, thats just me though. The control dials are so easy to use on the fly. I never thought a compact point and shoot camera could produce such great photos. The G11 just has a good heft and feel to it, this is not a light or little camera by no means. I am getting 400 to 450 pictures per charge. The 461.000 megapixle tilt/swivel LCD screen is bright, very clear and very versatile(takeing pictures of the grand kids at thier eye level with out getting down on your knees)... The G11 has a very good sharp lens, the shot to shot and flash shot to shot time is very good, agian this is coming from a point and shoot world... From using a bunch of canon cameras before I felt the G11 was easy to use. I mostly take pictures of bear in the Smokey Mountians (cades cove)and I love chaseing the grand kids around taking thier pictures.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
I wanted a camera that was not too big to carry around, but had lots of features. Although the camera is too big for my pockets, it is still small and lightweight enough for me to carry on vacation. It is easy to use and takes great pictures. It has lots of easy to use features and is as close to having a SLR without the size. This camera was recommended to me by two pro photographers. I'm glad I took their advise.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
My first digital was a Canon G2, and I later used a G5 (I prefer the G2). Meanwhile, moved to DSLR, but found the need for a compact again so purchased the G11. It's very good, but I'll admit to some disappointments that are the result of the compact size more than this particular camera. First, while the zoom range is great, there is significant barrel distortion on the wide angle. On the other hand, if you zoom in just a bit to try to eliminate that distortion, your aperture closes some. So that's the other problem: zooming closes aperture so if you want to get a little artistic on a portrait by zooming close but keeping a wide aperture to get bokeh, you are limited some. ISO is quite good up to 1600 (although best to stay at 800 or below). 3200 can be used too if that's the only way you're going to get your shot, but it won't generate a professional quality photo. 50 ISO is nice to have. The screen is great, but I like to use the viewfinder too, and it only shows something like 75% of the frame, so that makes it almost non-usable. Macro is very good, and the image quality, especially in good lighting, is excellent. RAW capability important, but for some shots I really only want a medium-quality JPEG so it's nice to have that option too. Wide format shots kind of nice for landscapes. Video is not bad either. I like the looks of it too. Bottom line: a very good compact camera, probably the best of its kind, but can't, of course, replace a DSLR (ideally, one would like to have both). It is nice not to have to lug around a lot of gear and one can take some very good photos with this.

I am a foreigner.Sorry for some misunderstanding.
Great image quality, great build quality BUT, feels and souds as a cheap plastik, you have to be very caoutious when grab and hold or using camera to avoid pressing buttoms in accidentally with your holding hand, you feel camera is not stable in your hand and camera do not find focus after you used tele-zoom, just after you switched off, and on again. Buttoms you can turn around (ISO speed dial, mode dial, esposure compensation dial)is too hard not smooth enough. The same problem with turnable LCD monitor.
Unfortunately, I am a bit disappointed.

I take the G11 wherever I go. It's small and portable enough to keep with me at all times. I am able to capture all those photo opportunities that I used to miss. The G11 provides most of the versatility of my Digital SLRs without lugging around my gear bag. I'm shooting more than ever and the quality is remarkable.

Can set on auto and get great pics or set it up to be creative. Fast on for first shot. Nice video with large display. A great value.

This camera is worth every penny. You got what you pay for. Excellent image quality and easy to use. It is quite compact that I bring it every where I go in case I see something that I like. I would recommend using a tripod (Monfrotto 785B - also worth every penny and compact) and Canon remote control, RS60-E3 (eliminate camera shake when use with a tripod). With this combination, this camera takes excellent photo in indoor, low light and at night. This is the photos I took using this camera [@] . This is the photos took using this camera by other G11 users [@] .

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
Great little point and shoot, but there is a loss of a few features such as Remote Capture, a few less megapixels, and a smaller lcd screen.
The upside is that the Noise reduction has been improved from the g10, and the lcd is now on a tilt and swivel.
The low range of apertures is expected in a Point and shoot and the lens lacks any significant telephoto zoom. There is a telephoto adapter however that is not a good substitute. The wide angle capabilities are unexpected but the 58mm in conjunction with the filter results in unattractive vignetting (also interferes with the auto-focus on macro mode)
The manual focus is also what would be expected from a point and shoot and the viewfinder crops out some of the image that would be visible in the live mode with the LCD.
This is the perfect camera for someone just getting into photography or someone who wants a compact little backup for shooting friends, concepts, travels, or just the odd snapshot.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
Bought just before trip to Costa Rica. Fairly intuitive to use, so I had few problems adapting to the camera. The "camera shake" warning comes on more frequently than I would have expected, so I wonder about effectiveness of Image Stabilization (frequent suggestion that a tripod should be used). Plastic mount of tele-converter has sloppy fit to camera. It is of limited value (raises normal lens from about 140-mm. equivalent to just under 200-mm. equivalent--not enough for animals/birds in the wild). With digital zoom, teleconverter got in close, but pictures are grainy. Viewfinder too small and provides no information--impossible to know how your shot turned out without having LCD open. Slow to download: a quick series of shots is possible only by using the multiple-exposure settings. I do like the possibility of 3-shots at different exposures or different focus. Fast start up. Expensive case (extra charge) is hard leather: strong, but really meant for belt--unlike typical DSLR case worn around neck. Extra battery expensive.Nice quality feel overall. Like fold-out LCD, esp. as it can be turned in to protect screen.Bought this for trip, not wanting to buy an expensive DSLR OR carry big camera and several lenses. Wish now I had gone for a medium-priced DSLR. I spent over [$]for this outfit, which is more than some of the cheaper DSLRs and close to medium-priced "enthusiast DSLRs". Disappointed especially in limited range of built-in zoom--you can't get nice shots of birds or monkeys in the jungle at 140-mm equivalent. Still, I enjoy having the camera along with me--I enjoy all kinds of things encountered and do like the possibility of a small camera that is sophisticated enough to give me nice images. Automatic or Program work well, but the options of shutter or aperture control and manual-focusare nice to have, too. I may not have had enough time to work on this, but I found manual-focus to be hard to use.

This is an unbelievably good camera. I bought it not expecting the clarity and versatility that it has. It seems that no matter what photos I take, the results are fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about this camera. It is a bit larger than a point and shoot, but with the results you will get, you won't mind carrying it around. Excellent Camera! Highly Recommend!

I'm a beast,
The camera is the beauty.
For what Canon has packed into this model and at the price it simply can't be beat. I bought this camera for a backup to other equipment and like I read other places it is becoming my primary for casual and pro applications. Clear, concise screen, the ability to use RAW the format file for storage along with jpg, it's compact size (just pop it into you coat pocket and your can go out for a walk, drive or use it at events). Above all do buy the largest storage media card your wallet can carry and enjoy this beauty.
I am still learning the various settings but it is ready to go with preprogrammed settings and they do an excellent job.
Any doubts? Give this beauty a chance to prove herself to you.
I use mine everyday and the not-so-good photos are operator error, the remaining photos are excellent.

Camera fulfilled purchase mission: easy to carry, easy to use, good quality image indoors and at night, relatively inconspicuous.
Flip out viewing screen very efficient to work with in dim light.
Automatic flash exposure good - photographing a white dog indoors.
I have not seriously looked at results in full sun; I use a larger sensor DSLR during normal daylight outings.
Image Stabilization seems mediocre.
Attached photographs straightened, cropped, and downsized - but otherwise as the camera saw it.
Point & shoot with camera flash.

I have a Canon 30D and 450D - but this is the camera I use the most. It's very easy to handle and the manual mode is so cool, as you can see how the pics gonna be on screen.
I can bring the camera when travelling without the bulk of an SLR - It's great.. I could be a little bit more pocketabble and the video should have been fuld HD 1080p - I think thats a marketing - I wonder when the perfect camera will arise? I considered the PEN and GF1 - but these are still too large for my taste.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
I bought the Canon G11 for its compact size. I didn't want to sacrifice the quality of my Canon 20ES with 3 L series lenses. I was not disappointed. The picture quality is outstanding. Every feature of this camera is 1st class and for a price of 1/2 of my bigger lenses a huge bargain. There are places like 4-wheelin in the canyons of Utah that my large SLR is bigger than I wanted to carry. I just couldn't be happier. I also took some anniversary pictures (that adorama pics processed for me) that turned out just outstanding. My daughter commented "Dad that camera sure takes good pictures" Well nuff said. I have been buying from Adorama and also used Adorama pics for years. They are a pleasure to work with. Thats what separates them from other companies. The way they treat their customers. I just want to say thanks Adorama!!

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
I own several Canon DSLRs but G11(and, before that, G2, G3, G9)is my fun but serious toy. It serves as my simple to use, user-friendly, light-weight back-up camera, my travel companion and my living room family and portrait photo tool. The G11 body is also my well-priced, small, dependible and most convinient and descrete party-photo camera. It also takes brilliant macro photos when mounted on a tripod and time delay shutter function is used. But,in order to extract all that value from it, I do resent having had to pay Canon $225 (Canadian) for an external flash, expensive spare batteries ($50 Can), leather case ($ 50 Can.) and an expensive telephoto lens ($175 Can.)plus an adapter ($30 Can.). At that combined price, I would have been smarter to purchase the new DSLR, Canon 7D with all its speed and focusing accuracy. Plus, I think Canon has made enough money from its G series. Its time for Canon to invest in a larger sensor - like its competitors have recently done. If not, then customer loyalty to the G series is at risk. Still, for the price of the body alone, this is a great camera and I'd recommend it to a friend.

This is a great camera to take with you all the time, especially when you want to travel light, or you're not out for a dedicated shoot or photowalk. You'll be prepared for a photo if an opportunity presents itself.
Great image quality for such a small sensor, and little to no noticeable noise to ISO 400. Reminds me of the old Olympus Stylus cameras I used to carry with me all the time.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
I am only comparing this camera to the Canon G10, which it replaces. There are long reviews available online concerning image quality etc., which are largely academic to me: both the G11 and G10 are capable of producing excellent images with certain limitations, with the G11 having a clear advantage at ISO 400 and 800, and being better at producing emergency shots at higher ISO. The differences are obvious in prints made after proper image processing.
The G11 has several significant ergonomic improvements over the G10, which make it worth it for someone who works in reportage style. In addition to the articulated LCD screen, the body shape has changed to improve access to the Review and Shortcut button, the Exposure Lock button falls more readily to hand, and the power button is smaller and recessed, which makes it more difficult to hit accidentally. The new Quick Shot mode is an excellent addition which allows for quick access to important controls for shooting through the optical viewfinder (like a traditional rangefinder or a DSLR). All in all, these are all improvements for the kind of photography at which this camera excels, and they come at the cost of resolution at low ISO and a slightly smaller control dial. A fair trade to me.
In my opinion, many camera buyers underestimate the importance of ergonomics in their choices. For me, the small improvements to G10's interface are enough for me to replace that already excellent camera with the G11. If you are looking for huge smooth prints, action-stopping speed, or tiny size, this camera is not for you. If you need a small unobtrusive camera for street photography, photojournalism, or travel photography in which you are more interested in people than in stunning landscapes, and one that integrates with a Canon SLR system, this is probably the best camera available for you.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
There are buttons everywhere and I couln't pick the thing up or hold it without pushing one. It has the typical small-sensor issues of highlights burning out. Canon should put a larger sensor in a larger body and turn it into a real DSLR substitute for those long days when you're trying to save weight.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G11 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 10 Megapixel, 5x Optical / 4x Digital Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer System:
Here's the Cons: soft touch controls on back of camera make it easy to change settings unintentionally, smallish body for medium size hands, optical viewfinder is limited but works in a pinch, costly
Here's the Pros: extremely versatile, great low light capabilities, auto settings finally work under many different situations, articulating lcd screen, can fit into a loose jacket pocket, solid feel to the body
Here's my opinion of the resulting photos: I shot a test series on tripod during a sunny day and found that the resolution was nearly equal to a DSLR at low ASA settings (up to 200 asa) this is not to say that the resolution at max blowup is as smooth as a larger light sensor found in a DSLR, at 400 to 800 asa, a reasonable 8x10 can be expected. Using the flash resulted in slightly overexposed shots, easily corrected in post shot work.
In the night, handheld shots were impressive at 800 to 1250 asa set by camera in program mode. The image stabilisation of the lens worked well. When looking into the dark corners of the shots, purple fringe and the like were well controlled. Colors in night shots were rendered accurately.
All of my test shots were done under JPEG fine, large settings. I haven't explored the raw file side of the camera yet, nor the accompanying software. Please be aware that Canon has not provided a RAW plug in for photoshop at this point in time.
I still haven't explored the majority of options that the camera offers. I've written this review earlier then I thought I would because Canon has gotten the hint and built a camera with less pixels but better photos with higher ASA speed. Consumers can talk a lot but we know that we vote with our purchases as to which cameras help us to get the shots we want.
I own a Canon 40D, Canon Powershot 710IS, Panasonic FZ30. The last 2 I call my 100 ASA cameras. I finally have a 800 ASA P&S camera with the G11!
