This has been a fun camera. Small and lightweight. The facial recognition for autofocus is a useful feature.

Comments about Canon Canon Powershot SD1100 IS Digital Elph Camera, 8.0 Megapixels, 3x Optical Zoom, 4x Digital Zoom, 2.5" LCD Display, Silver:

I bought this as an always-with-me camera. I use a dSLR or film camera for "serious" photography, but I wanted something compact that I could carry with me for snapshots of friends, situational shots, and to function as a basic video recorder. I'm on a limited budget which ruled out cameras like the SD990IS.

I went with the SD1100is because it was in my price range, it takes great pictures, it feels very solid, and it produces good quality video. It won't replace your HD camcorder, but for quick videos to share with friends or to post on video sharing sites it does the job very well. The macro mode is impressive, producing high quality results and consistent focus even with the focus assist lamp turned off.

The only thing I truly miss is a manual mode. The SD1100is has a limited (but useful) manual mode that allows you to adjust color balance, exposure compensation, and shutter speed to a very limited degree, but there's no aperture control or aperture priority mode (the camera doesn't have a traditional aperture).

If you're looking for a compact P&S to use to learn photography with, skip this one and look at something like the Powershot A590IS - same price range and it has full manual mode. On the other hand, if you're looking for a good compact camera that will take great pics of family, friends, and those vacation photos with the bonus of decent video - the SD1100IS is an excellent choice.

An added bonus, you can turn off the focus assist lamp, screen (it has an optical viewfinder), and most sounds for a quiet camera to get those candid moments! Great for sleeping kids, jumpy pets, and other moments when you need quiet and unobtrusive.

Bought the camera for my wife's Christmas present. She is the main picture taker in our family. We use it primarily for taking family photos for things like vacation, birthday parties, and holidays - general purpose use.

After my daughter lost her previous camera I was looking for a good camera, a modicum of features, and a good price. I found all 3 with this beauty. Qiuck to turn on, quick from shutter press to taking the picture, and nice JPEGs right out of the camera all combine to make this Canon product one of the best cameras my family has ever owned. The included software makes it easy for a beginner to begin to work with digital images. The manual is written in a very easy-to-understand format and covers all aspects of the cameras' operation.
