Comments about Fujifilm Fujifilm IS-1 Visible Plus IR Sensitive Digital Camera Starter Kit with IR & IR Cut Filters:

I bought this unit to test my interest in near IR photography. It's extremely easy to use for any experienced photographer. The ability to autofocus using a so-called deep IR filter that cuts off visible light is amazing. My test shots were 9 meg jpgs. Processing took approximately one minute per image. I'll likely sell this camera and move on to a dedicated Fuji IR DSLR. But this camera is the best entry point for IR photography that I know of. Highly recommended. See the many online reviews re. the "hotspot" issue (which is not a deal breaker). [...]

Comments about Fujifilm Fujifilm IS-1 Visible Plus IR Sensitive Digital Camera Starter Kit with IR & IR Cut Filters:

The camera itself deserves 4 stars, but the kit deserves 3. (My SLR collection: Fujica STX-1, Canon EOS ELAN IIe, Fuji IS-1. My Point-and-Shoot: Canon S200, Sony Cyber-shotU, Canon SD1000, Canon Powershot SX100 IS.) The camera: Fairly intuitive operation, especially for those with photography background or using the old classic SLR where you have to set everything. I enjoy the control over camera. If you have been using a point-and-shoot and want to change to the IS-1, be prepare to take sometime to learn the basics first. It is not the fastest camera, only 1.5 frame/sec max, but OK for sports. Dual memory slot means low cost but fast CF card can be used, and don't have to buy xD card. And the lens zoom range is good of many tasks, unless you want the 1200mm telephoto, but then you already know what you want. Unlike the newer S100fs, it runs on AA, so no need to buy special battery pack as spare.

The IR function means filters are necessary. The kit comes with a B+W UV/IR cut is reasonable. Check white balance everytime when you change scene. It will help getting perfect picture. The kit also comes with a B+W IR filter, but for some reason it doesn't screw on. I exchanged for a 2nd one and still doesn't work. (Adorama's customer service need some improving here.) Borrowing a Hoya IR filter, I found this camera does give good IR sensitivity. The IR image shows up on viewfinder/LCD after a short delay. Focusing sometimes will need a few try. I am still learning the art, so please see other Pros' IR experience with this camera. So far, I am pleased with the black and white photos I got.
