Comments about Nikon Nikon D3000 DX-Format 10.2 Megapixel Digital SLR, Lens Kit with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR Lens ,1 Year Nikon USA warranty:

A friend of mine, new to cameras, bought this camera and sent it to me for inspection. Here follows my review of it.

As an experienced photographer, I find this camera to be extremely poor. For starters, the body feels very uncomfortable and unlike other Nikon bodies I'm used to (Like the D300S and D90). The scroll wheel is in an awkward setting relative to thumb placement, and overall I had a hard time using the camera intuitively and comfortably on manual settings.

For a beginner photographer, however, I think this is an excellent camera. The Tutorial mode, made to gradually coax the user from a "Green Box Automatic" setting into a Manual setting user, is something all other entry DSLRs need to incorporate. Additionally, the graphical interface, including graphical representation of aperture, I think suits beginners more than simply giving them numbers like "f/3.5".

In short, for anyone who's had experience with SLRs or DSLRs, I'd recommend they skip this camera and instead get the D5000 or even the D300S. For anyone completely new to photography/SLRs/DSLRs, this is a great camera to look at.

Being an entry-level DSLR, the overall rating was made with a beginner in mind.

This camera is simple and easy to use for beginners but for more advanced photographers you will outgrow it within about... Ten minutes. The viewfinder is small and therefore close to impossible to focus manually. I use a 50mm 1.8 non af-s so in lowlight situations I can shoot with ISO 100 but i still have insane amounts of noise at 100 preposterous. Will definitely be upgrading soon but staying with nikon because they definitely didn't screw up the ergonomics.

I had the D40. sold it and bought a D80, LOVE IT. Shooting events it's great. My wife liked the D40 and was mad when I sold it. My D80 with the vertical grip (2 batteries) is to heavy and bulky for just the backyard, park etc... I bought the D3000 for her and for my second camera for shooting MMA. D80 with a 1.8/35mm prime lens for the action shots and the D3000 for the fighters with their hands raised at the end of the fight. Now she uses for around the house, backyard, sledding. She takes the pictures, downloads them all her self LOVE IT!!!

Unable to see through viewfinder, very fuzzy, and with no live view for backup camera was completely useless. [...] upgraded to a D5000 with 55-200 lens no problem. Great pics with the D5000 so far.Maybe other D3000's worked out, but not this one. This camera was for my Daughter ( I have a D90 ).

This is the first SLR camera I have owned. Very easy to use right out of the box, but I have been learning in full manual mode, S mode and A mode. These modes are a little bit more difficult but overall you have much more control over the quality of your pictures. I hope to have this for awhile or until I upgrade to a higher quality Nikon SLR.....CHA...ching....hey you get what you pay for. Great camera for the bucks...period!!

Bought D3000 after considering D40 for many months. Returned it in a week. High ISO performance was disappointing, and I prefer shooting in natural light. Also, while new "Guide" mode is enticing for beginners, I guarentee you will not use it after a brief acclamation period with the camera. If you're price conscious - get a D60 or D40. I did and I'm totally satisfied now.
