Incredible camera package. Fast focus, quick startup, very user friendly. I will definately use this from casual family type photos to using it at work for web photos and enlarged prints. I like the small size but I wish it was bit larger (believe it or not). Read about Nikon digital cameras at[...] He gave great insight into operation and recommendations. 6.1 megapixels produces incredible images. I was considering a D80 package with same lens combo, but this package saved me quite a bit and now I am searching for some more accessories to buy from Adorama. Their service was fast and easy. And they do have the best prices (beware of all the 'discount' camera stores in NY - they sell gray market stuff).

I replaced my Kodak Z812 point and shoot with the D40 so I wouldn't miss those great action photos our 2 year old grandson gives us.With this camera I can just keep shooting. I also love the 55mm/200mm VR lens a must have. We are also going to Disney World and with this camera I know my night photos will turn out fantastic. Another nice thing I am so impressed with is the sharpness of the pictures, they are so crisp. Great battery life, but I did pick up a spare to keep with me to play it safe. I also picked up a Lowepro Micro backpack to keep my camera in. This backpack has room to store my camera with the 18mm/55mm lens, also my 55mm/200mm VR lens, cables, charger, extra battery, filters,SD cards, cleaning brush and cloth, and my Z812. Keeps the hands free and fits nice on my back.

Excellent kit for this "entry level" DSLR -- The longer lens is the recommended VR version (vibration reduction)... This combo gives a lot of bang for the buck if you don't mind changing lenses... I've gotten a lot of nice nature shots and found the 55-200mm quite versatile... Would give it 4.5 stars if I could

(If you're on Flickr, see at SCSheola)

Only thing is, if you get more serious and want some of the older Nikon lenses, many of them are not fully compatible w/ this model. Just something to consider... I added an older Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro lens and it won't autofocus on this model (although for macro you don't usually use AF, but this lens can also be used for portraits, etc.)

I finally replaced 2 Nikon film cameras (FM & EM) +lenses with the D40. Adorama gave me a fair price for my used equipment & applied it toward the new D40 Kit + 55-200mm VR lens. I am impressed with the quality and sharp images I'm getting. I've used 35mm cameras for 45 years (semi-pro doing weddings and H.S. & college newspapers/yearbooks & family/travel) so now I'm in the learning curve switching to digital. I'm really glad I switched. This camera has a lot more capability than I thought, much better than my previous cameras.

I love taking pictures of my gorgeous and sexy wife for future viewing, and maybe an amateur contest or two, and this camera works great. There are enough manual features to be creative but also takes great pictures in the auto mode. I added the remote to my order and I'm glad I did because now I can be in the action shots as well...without having to ruin the moment.
