CAMERA PKG. WAS BEST BUY!!
So far the camera is great, only issue has been the red-eye flash function, but probably user error.

Everything is O.K until you compare with real good camera such as Pentax K10d.
A great combination of quality camera with easy use and fantastic kit lenses that are a great way to develop your passion for photography.
One of the best value camera combinations going around.

I use the camera for fun and for work. It is easy to use and takes great photos.
took her out of the box, charged her up, and took some pictures of my first grandchild. i'm 65, bad eyes, and set in my ways. the camera had me almost at first click. my son talked me into it, smart kid.
Photography is my hobby. For my range of uses, from family to flowers to travel, etc. this is a great camera at a good price. It has all of the main features that I use of the more expensive models. The menu is very easy and fast to use. The only limitations for me is the slow recycle time for the flash and the lack of reasonably priced longer focal length lens.

image stabilization feature is wonderful - all lenses, even ancient ones, benefit from this. The 4/3 mount allows use of many, many lenses with fairly inexpensive adapters. Olympus themselves have great optics in their lenses, but you don't need to stop there if you have the adapters....
The camera contains so many features, it's always fun to discover them.
Full-time live view is also way cool.
This camera is awesome.

As you can see in the other reviews this is a great camera. Any other camera with the same features are going to cost much more and the 510 sacrafices nothing. If this is your first DSLR get the 2 lens kit and you'll have some good range for very little expense. All of the features are first rate and Olympus has a quality build with a good feel. Enjoy!

I am still learning all the "perks" about this camera. Being an Olympus advocate, I'm sure that once I master all the options this will be a huge addition to my photography skills.
The camera is really good and I would recommend it to anybody. The flash blinks a couple of times before it actually takes the picture, that is the only thing I have found to not be great.

Compact without being too small. Good ergonomics, commonly used controls are easy to find & use. Well balanced. Excellent image quality. Both kit lenses have excellent resolution and contrast.

This is my first DSLR and I find it very easy to use. I needed to read the manual few times in teh first week, but after that I'm using the camera in "manual" mode all the time and getting great results! thanks Olympus for such great product!

I spent two months researching digital SLRs in this class/feature set/price range - and the Olympus 510 came out on top. I'm thrilled with the results and have recommended it to everyone I know.

This camera is simply great all around. I've used Olympus cameras since the E-300 (stolen), followed by an E-500 (borrowed), and now finally my own E-510. This is by far the best camera of all of those, and shows great development and innovation by Olympus.
First, get the 2-lens kit. Just get it. The telephoto lens is a lightweight gem, and when else will you be able to get any lens for less than a hundred bucks? A no-brainer.
Second, this kit (both lenses, and the body) is ideal for most shooting. You won't need any other lenses until you really exceed the limits of the 2 you've got, and you will know when that happens, and it's not easy. They're excellent lenses, and that's the main reason to get this camera.
The other main reason is the dust reduction. No other system is as effective as Olympus' Super-Sonic wave filter. You simply never have to worry about dust, period. You can change lenses in dirty environments 8 or 10 times a shoot (I do, at football games) and still never get a spot of dust. It's just a non-issue, and this advantage cannot be understated -- it's a real deal-breaker for me, one of the reasons I stick with Olympus.
But there are other reasons too -- every lens in the Olympus lineup is excellent. They probably have the best lenses available in all ranges. I have the 50mm f/2 Macro which is simply perfect glass, there are no faults. Amazing portraits and macros from that lens. The lenses that come with the E-510 are also extremely lightweight and small -- you've never seen a smaller, lighter 300mm-equivalent telephoto than the 40-150 f/4-5.6. It's amazing. That light weight and portability turns out to be a real advantage. After all, if you can't carry your camera with you, how are you going to catch those great photographs?
Detail is perfectly captured on the 510, perhaps better so than most 10MP DSLRs. 10MP is a perfect resolution I think. The 510 also allows you to completely turn *off* noise reduction in-camera, which gives you unparalelled detail in your shots, with a slight but smooth film-like grain (optional - turn noise reduction to "Low" to get rid of it and make the camera like any other DSLR). Noise is extremely well-controlled throughout the range of sensitivities -- ISO 100-800 are usable without a second thought and ISO 1600 is lovely too, a great improvement from the previous noisy E-500.
Hmm.. what else? The screen is great (though I've heard complaints, I've NEVER had a problem with it), the controls are perfect (extremely fast and easy), the viewfinder is good, the color is accurate and amazingly real (beautiful "Olympus color"), battery life is great, capture speed is fairly good... pretty much zero complaints from me on anything.
Now the two killer features of this camera, Image Stabilization and Live View. IS in-body is a godsend. It really does work, without a doubt. I use the 40-150mm at 300mm equivalent focal length at 1/125, 1/80 shutter speeds and can still get a good keeper rate (~75%). Some will be blurry of course, but at those speeds on the E-500 I would not get any keepers. So yes, it really works.
The live view is useful when you need it, and you won't realize how useful until you actually do need it. I've used it for macros where getting my eye to the viewfinder would have poked my scalp with thorns, for wide over-the-head shots where I could roughly see the framing (very useful), for getting perfect manual focus on tripod shots or with manual-focus lenses (using a live 10x zoom)... it's extremely useful, and not in the way Point-&-shoot users would use it, but in the way photographers need it. A great tool.
So I think I've said enough. I think Olympus is the most underrated and overlooked camera maker out there, when in actuality they have a great digital system that should be fairly considered. This is a great, well-rounded camera with amazing features and no show-stopping problems. It's a perfect photographic tool for me at least, and I think it'd be great for anyone, both as a first camera for beginners, or as a lightweight addition to a pro kit. Take a serious look at Olympus, because they've stepped up to the plate. :)
Yosemite, 2007. Perfect, accurate color.
