The DCR-150 has one purpose: allow the camera to focus closely (~8 inches) at any focal length. Thus, when used with superzoom cameras like the Panasonic FZ50, you can get high magnification macro pictures. Like all macro filters of its type, you'll only be able to focus in a very narrow range of distances around 8 inches.
There is no degradation of image quality using it; the images are razor-sharp.
You'll have a narrow depth of field, but that's unavoidable when doing macrophotography and not the fault of this lens. You'll want to find enough light to use the maximum f/number your camera supports, since you'll need every mm of depth of field you can get.
The universal snap-on adapter is wonderful, letting you attach and remove the lens quickly.
Raynox also makes the DCR-250, a similar closeup filter that will focus at ~4 inches rather than ~8, if you need even more magnification than the 150 provides.
Highly recommended; an inexpensive way to count facets on bug eyes and pollen on bees and all sorts of things.
