Comments about Macsense Macsense GNC-38 Geomet'r Real Time Geotagging GPS Receiver with Y Cable, for the Nikon D300, D3, D200, D2Hs, D2Xs, and Fujifilm S5 Pro DSLR Cameras:

Adorama had a great price on this so I bought it to use on a trip.

Pros: Acquires satellites very quickly, usually around a minute for a cold start and then in just a few seconds from a hot start. It didn't seem to matter if location since last use changed by thousands of miles.

Attaches to the hot shoe with Velcro. It is all too easy to catch the cable and rip off the unit. As long as the cable is secured to the port, the Velcro will enable the unit to release and just dangle with no damage. If the connection end were left free, it would be easy to lose the unit and not know it.

Switch allows the unit to be turned off and on easily.

Works in airplanes at 30,000 feet, although it takes longer to find the satellites.

Camera display shows GPS and blinks until satellites are acquired.

Cons: Switch is a push on/off type switch with a rubber cover. Tends to move sideways and not activate. Easy to bump the switch and either turn it off or on and not know it. I am not sure how long the switch will last. A better design would be a slider switch that would be less prone to being changed by bumping.

Does place a fairly heavy drain on the battery if left on all day. I needed to charged my battery every day if I used it 4-6 hours a day and shot 500 frames.

I returned this item when I found that it records GPS information only in a folder containing your photos, NOT in the metadata for each photo. So, when I'm traveling around, for every city I visit in a day, I'd have to create a new folder in camera so that the different GPS data could be stored. I found that feature unusable except in very limited circumstances such as when I'd be in a single place all day long.

The embedded gps data is great!! The accompanying software is clunky and needs help, but the GPS unit itself has been bulletproof. This is one of my most used gadgets.

I really enjoyed this GPS unit, but alias it quit working after only a few months. Unit was never wet. Unit received no physical damage. It just will not work. I see the dim red light first flashing and then turning solid red, but that all that happens.

This device is very simple to use.(on-off switch. no buttery) The Y cable is handy to use with two 10 pins device. only if to have some additional hotshoe to hold two device, that will be perfact.

I take my D-300 hiking nearly every weekend and on road trips, and it has been difficult on numerous occasions to determine where I took a specific shot. Now, that's not a problem.
