Sometimes seems a bit slow to acquire a satellite connection. I traveled to some remote areas along the Vietnamese / China border and didn't acquire a satellite connection for an entire week.

Use mainly when traveling.

When initializing the unit, it is slow. It does not work in slot canyons or tight places where rock abounds.

A GP-1 destroyed my D90. Don't buy this thing. It doesn't work well. It takes forever to acquire a signal. It sucks battery off your camera. And the connector sticks out of the camera like a knife in it's entrails. The temptation is to leave it plugged in and your camera turned on. But in your bag, it becomes a deadly weapon that will break the inside of your camera in heinous and disastrous ways.

Don't go within 1000m of this thing. Worst product Nikon ever made.

Comments about Nikon Nikon GP-1 GPS Adapter for D3, D2XS, D2X, D2HS, D200, D300, D700, D90:

I purchased the GP1 about a year ago. it works well, but is slow to lock if you have traveled very far between uses, (a plane trip of several hundred miles or more). Once locked it stays locked. The cable is a pain to use. A hot shoe arrangement would be much better. It was very good to use on a cruise that I was on recently since the landmarks are not always easy to identify later when view photos. I think it is a little over priced and the documentation is sparse.

Comments about Nikon Nikon GP-1 GPS Adapter for D3, D2XS, D2X, D2HS, D200, D300, D700, D90:

This product has not worked for me with the transparency others have experienced. On a magazine shoot in the middle of the Oklahama prairie last week (shooting D700) it took two or three minutes to get a fix. Even then the tag didn't stick to the image. This is probably operator error, but the abysmal documentation won't help anyone. The cable is a nuisance and a direct interface throught he hot shoe (which I've seen on competitors) would be a great improvement. I think the price might be unjustifiably high, too. If I can get it to work consistently my opinion will change, but for now I wouldn't recommend it.

Bought one unit that seemed to work but I lost it within a week hurrying to a shuttle launch.

Bought a second unit for a trip to Alaska. It is very slow to acquire lock, sometimes not at all. It couldn't lock on the train to Denali, possibly due to the gold tint on the car roof. D300 Battery drained in 4 hours.

10 pin cable pulled apart at strain relief. I will find out how Nikon treats that when I ask for warranty. Don't know if it relates to cslow lock and battery drain.

Only challenge was trying to get the plugs into the ports as they were a bit snug. Had to go outside of the cement villa to get it to work, but it picked up a signal. Wish there was a stand off post to raise the GPS above the pop-up flash. Quick geo-tagging the pics in picassa.

The Nikon GP-1 works much better than I thought it would. It has found the satellites in as little as 3 seconds. However, it is usually more like 30 seconds. If you leave the camera on, it will find the satellites by the time you take the lens cap off and unlock the lens.

It does not work in all buildings.

The interface to google maps in Lightroom 2 works great by double clicking on the GPS metadata field.

Based on some reviews I was a little apprehensive of ordering this unit. However I am glad I did, it acquires position data quickly and greatly exceeds its specification accuracy of 10 meters. Based on my tests it is within 2 meters about 80% of the time. I wish I could select the position units and Datum, ie, UTM vs Lat-Long and NAD27 vs WGS84.

Came with no manual. While I was downloading one, my son plugged the cable in backwards. Destroyed the USB board and cost me 280 bucks to get it repaired.Took a while to lock on, but pretty quick there after. Fun to see the maps and where the shots were taken and the process is a snap... especially during those senior moments.I love it!

Comments about Nikon Nikon GP-1 GPS Adapter for D3, D2XS, D2X, D2HS, D200, D300, D700, D90:

This product works, with the following limitations:
1) Initial acquisition takes around a minute (or less).
2) If you enable power saving by automatically shutting down metering, this unit takes 5-10 seconds to reacquire GPS signal.
3) If you disable power saving, this unit and the metering system will drain your battery a lot faster.

Even with this limitation, I still use the GP-1 since I am too lazy to tag pictures manually.

Having read the instructions and followed them with a test shoot, I took the GP-1 to Nantucket. It worked well on my Nikon D90. Key points are these: 1) set the camera to not powersave, 2) leave camera on (hey, your battery can recharge and you have a spare, right?), 3) takes a few minutes to get going in the morning but once that's done, it's good all day.

Took an eternity to find its location when first used, but works fine now. The cable is too long and constantly gets in the way. A 10 pin pass-thru port would be nice to allow existing accessories to operate with this in place. Compass direction and some other basic GPS data points would be an added plus.

Comments about Nikon Nikon GP-1 GPS Adapter for D3, D2XS, D2X, D2HS, D200, D300, D700, D90:

I placed an order for a GP-1 before the first units arrived in the US. This review therefore applies to an early production model.
I installed the GP-1 on a Nikon D90 and I’m extremely disappointed with the results.
1. The GP-1 has a really tough time figuring out its position. When I first connected up the GP-1, I was at home in my apartment. It couldn’t find its location. I figured the problem was that I was indoors. But then I went outside and walked around for about 20 minutes with the camera turned on. It still couldn’t find its position. I figured that maybe, the problem was the buildings around me, so I tried getting a fix on a traffic island in the middle of a wide street. No luck. Then I took my kids to the park. No luck. The park had a few trees, but even so, it should have been able to find its location. Then I tried going up to the roof of my apartment building. Finally, after setting the camera on an air conditioner for a couple of minutes, it found its location. But then when I picked up the camera and walked around the roof a bit, it lost its location!
2. The GP-1 takes about a minute to locate itself every time the camera is turned on (if its able to locate itself at all). If you turn off the camera between shots, this means you’ll have to wait a minute (or more!) before location information is recorded. After the initial start up time, it takes about 5 seconds for the GP-1 to re-locate itself before a photo is taken. You need to press the shutter half way down, wait a few seconds and only then take a photo. This takes a lot of the spontaneity out of photography. One of the reasons I updated to a D-SLR was that I couldn’t stand the shutter lag on my old point and shoot.
3. The GP-1 sits a bit awkwardly on top of the camera. When it is attached to the hot shoe, the built in flash on the D90 cannot open and the camera cannot be fit in the case I have. This should not be a problem if you carry your camera in a big bag.
4. The cable connecting the GP-1 to the camera is nice and thick, but it sticks out to the side quite a bit and the connectors are quite delicate. You have to be careful not to insert the cable in the wrong orientation.
5. The GP-1 comes with a clip to hold the receiver to the camera strap, but the clip is made to fit Nikon straps. If you have a wider strap (I have one by Op/Tech) the clip won’t work (at least not without some modification of either the clip or the strap).
As I said at the beginning, I’m extremely disappointed. I still haven’t succeeded in taking a single picture in which my location information was recorded properly. I suppose I could have taken photos of the air conditioners on the roof of my building (before I lost the signal), but that really didn’t interest me.
GPS receivers from companies like Garmin and Magellen are so good, that I had forgotten that some instruments have a hard time doing even the most basic of tasks. Nikon has a lot of work to do on the GP-1 before it comes close to doing what it’s supposed to do.
