This lens is sharper to my eye than the DO 70-300 which I replaced. They are very different items, but the 100mm is fine as a medium tele on the D series or Rebels which don't demand L type optics of the full frame 35mm cameras. It is totally quiet, fast tracking focus even in macro mode, the big plus for the lens. For macro you don't want any more aperture than this where depth of field is already challenging. It is very compact for traveling.As it is not sealed, keep it away from dusty sports. It moves directly to macro, unlike older lenses that required a switch. Focus movement does NOT affect polarizer alignment, a very good feature. Use a polarizer with it in national park shots or at aquariums and be impressed with results, but be sure you pick one that is a circular polarizer for autofocus to work properly.
