This lens feels solid in the hand, has nice smooth bokeh, focuses quickly and quietly, grabs all the color you could hope for and does it all even when the light starts to fade.I no longer have any excuse not to take great pictures every time :-)The only real complaint is that it's just adding insult to injury when you make someone pay extra for a Lens Hood when you are paying $1K+ for a lens - shame on you Canon.[...]

I previously owned a 28-70L 2.8 and I was usually up the wall trying to take shots in confined areas this lens has opened up new opportunities for me and I was surprised with the great image quality. I am keeping this on my 60D full time.

Best walk around zoom for a crop body Canon. I really can't tell the difference between my refurbished lens and brand new. There are no marks what so ever and the glass is perfect. The lens was well packaged and included the factory manual.

I read many pro's and contra's about this lens, and finally purshased one. Was surprised with the significant chromatic aberrations in my copy, particularly at 55 mm (in conjunction with 7D). Any aperture, any distance to the object, they are just TOO significant, at least 1-2 pixels around the center and 3-5 pixels at the corners. The in-camera JPEG converter successfully eliminates these, but once you are dealing with RAW on yourself - be prepared to deal with this pain.

Needed a little more wide angle for my crop body, so I sold a Canon 24-105 F/4 L for this lens. While not as well-built as the L, it's also not quite as heavy. Plenty sharp, as others have commented on. My main purpose in this post is to applaud Adorama for providing good selection of refurbished gear, with an outstanding warranty and replacement policy. My first copy of this lens front-focused, which I could not adjust out since my XSi bodies do not have micro adjust focus adjustment. I returned the lens with Adorama's prepaid shipping label [...] Buy refurbished from Adorama with confidence.

Probably Canon's best walk around lens. Certainly has the best specs. In my opinion, my Copy seems to shoot a tad wide. Nice at the 17mm end but a little wide at the 55mm end. Tend to have to get a little close to the subject for a head and shoulder shot. Think of it as more of a 25-80mm in the full frame world. Reviews say there is some barrel distortion at the wide end, if there is, I haven't noticed it all that much. What I have noticed is some moderate vignette at the wide end fully opened under bright conditions, easily fixed by stopping down a little. (But why would you shoot wide open under those conditions anyway.) This lens is both crazy sharp and fast for a zoom. With IS and wide angle views it tends to make this a very hand holdable lens. The build quality could be better. My copy tends to grab in the middle focal range when using the zoom although I haven't noticed any zoom creep. Of course all that stuff about build quality has been said before. The other thing is the price, but what your getting is a walk around that in the full frame world has IS over the 24-70mm f/2.8 and is faster then the 24-105mm f/4.0 IS. Kinda of makes it worth the price. My refurb. came to me looking like a new item, so I would be at all concerned about buying a refurb.

I second the previous reviewer that there's nothing wrong with a refurbished lens. Save yourself some $ and with the 1 year Adorama warranty you're secure.

This lens is a beaut. Looks slightly dominant on a T1i but a small price for such a great lens.

For indoor, portrait, low-light outdoor shots, this is an amazing 2.8 wide-angle lens.

I own over a dozen lenses by Canon, Sigma, and Tonika, I prize my 17-55mm as one of my finest.... Regardless of it's low price.
