I moved from the 24-70 f2.8 L Series to the 17-55. For me, this is a much better complement to my 70-200 f2.8 II than the 24-70 was. I've given up a bit on the long end of lens (only 55mm), but picked up significantly at wide end (17mm) and the weight reduction is nice. It's a great walk around lens that takes ridiculously sharp pics that are easily on par with the L Series lenses. The build quality doesn't measure up to the L lenses, but it's solid enough for me.

This is better then an L series zoom lens, it might not be constructed in the same casing with a red stripe but it kicks the hell out of them when it comes to taking pictures. I returned 3 copies of the 24-70L before giving up on it and buying this, that lens has huge problems and you cannot get a sharp picture with it. Those who say their's are tack sharp probably don't know what tack sharp means. Also sharper then the 17-40 and the 16-35 which are great lenses but this is just sharper. This lens straight out of the box took pictures that you could never have achieved with the garbage the 24-70 was spitting out.... Great purchase, worth the money, for an all around lens for photos and video you cant beat it for the price.... low light f2.8 and IS, stop reading reviews and just buy the thing already, you wont regret it...

I bought the lens mainly for low-light indoor shots and night work outdoors. However, it has quickly become the lens I use most often on my 50-D, which came with a Canon 18-200 mm lens (which I also felt was a great lens)
This lens is rugged (survived a drop with no damage) and is super sharp, even at 2.8. Love the constant 2.8 aperture. Very professional quality, might as well be an "L" series.
My main gripe is that Canon refuses to include a hood, which cost me an additional $60. When is Canon going to compete with Tamron, Sigma, etc. in this area. Including the hood would definitely improve my impressions of Canon's marketing. policies.

Much better than the cheapy kit lens. First real digital camera for me (making the transition from film). Super optics, fast focus, wide aperture. Nice! Only gripe is I wish Canon could come up with a way to use smaller filters. 77MM for this size lens? Those things aren't cheap!

I just recently purchased this lens with the T2i in store. I am a complete novice having only used point and shoots prior to this. I could immediately see a difference with the kit lens, but this lens took my pictures to another level. Most of my shots are at home, inside of the baby. Compared to the kit lens, I see faster focus and do not get as many blurry shots given the low lighting in our condo.

The more I am learning about exposure and the creative usages, I am see what a great lens this is for me. I have not tried any L series, but then again I have only been doing this for less than a month.

If you can afford it, I say get it and skip the stuff in between. Other than its size/weight on the Rebel body, I am very happy

Best workaround lens for crop body. It has quick and accurate AF. Works great in low light. I use it for portraits, close-up, landscapes and night photography. My only problem with this lens is 55mm is short for me.

I really thought this was a must have lens but after using it for a month or so I'm just not impressed with the clarity of the shots. Maybe I'm too used to my 50 & 100mm primes? This is a great lens and I absolutely love mine. Cons are it's size and weight. Also, when looking through the view finder, there is vignetting. This worried me at first but then I realized that it has yet to show up in any image I've taken with my Rebel Xsi. Buy this lens with confidence if you want IS in this focal range and a fast aperature.

I love this lens! It makes a great duo combined with the 70-200mm f/4L IS (I use these lenses on two 1.6x bodies). I effectively have an equivalent 28-320mm range with f/2.8 in the mid-range focal lengths. I don't miss the 55-70mm focal gap.

I didn't think that I would fall in love with IS capability in a lens of this rather short focal length. However, I did! The great IS combined with the constant f/2.8 aperture makes this a very viable low light lens.

In comparison to my 70-200 2.8, the ef-s 17-55 is cheaply built, not very sharp and lacks contrast. I bought the 17-55 when I was young to photography and it was affordable at the time. Today, I'd like to encourage everyone to save their money and buy L lenses. You will be much happier with the better glass and you will end up buying fewer lenses. The 17-55 accumulates a lot of dust inside the lens as well.

The Canon 17-55mm 2.8 is a great all-around lens for the 1.6 crop cameras (most). The 2.8 aperature makes focusing fast and you can obtain some great bokeh. The IS makes hand holding easy even in lower light situtaions. I have shot about 1000 pictures with the lens and am completely satisified. It's not inexpensive, but I think it is worth it!

After shooting with this lens a bit, it's obvious not all "L" image quality lenses come with the red ring. This is a fantastic lens, capable of image quality to match Canon's fine L series. Build quality is better than typical consumer zooms, but not quite up to L standards. For the price, Canon should have included a lens hood. Get one if you're going to buy this lens.

AF is fast and IS let's me get another couple of stops. Only slightly soft wide open, but even one stop (f3.2) produces sharp, sharp images. Color is excellent, only marginally not as warm as my L lenses. Nothing that can't be addressed quickly in post processing.

This lens is not for point and clickers, but if you're serious about photography, it won't hold you back.

If you want just one lens for all around shooting and can't afford an L series, then get this lens. I upgraded from the kit 18-55mm IS that came with the Xsi and am so glad I did. I have access to 85mm f1.2L, 24-105mm f/4L other L series prime lenses (I work with photographers everyday, I'm an art director). All of them pointed me to this lens as a great upgrade. They all agreed the next step would be an L series. But since no L series lenses exist that are anything close to a wide angle for a 1.6x frame like the Xsi, this was the one to get. The closest option was the 24-105mm, but at a 1.6x conversion on the Xsi that lens would have been more like a 35-160mm (not wide enough). It's fast, the weight was a bit heavy for the Xsi alone, but I added the battery grip and the whole setup is now well balanced.

The IS motor is a bit noisy. I sent the first one back and the replacement was just as noisy. I learned to get over it.

I took the lens to Kauai (see photos). It was the only lens I brought. I did consider the 10-22 EFS, but that is junk at f3.5-5.6. Not something you take to Kauai when you spend thousands on the trip.

All in all, it's the only lens I use everyday. I do have a 100mm f2.8 macro I use for special occasions. I am now saving for an 85mm 1.2L and then a long prime. Eventually I will upgrade the body to a Mark, at which time the Xsi and this 17-5mm will make a great resale.

Pretty consistently sharp images throughout the range. A bit of field curvature on the 17mm setting, and shows a hint of false chroma near field edges near limit of zoom - 55mm setting

Overall, an excellent low-light performer, and a definite upgrade to stock/kit zoom lenses.

My first use of this lens was a wedding in very subdued light. As I wasn't the primary shooter, I didn't want my flash to disrupt the routine of the pro, so I shot nearly all natural light. I was able to get clear shots at 1/10 second with IS and 2.8. It was great!

For the money, it seems like it wouldn't have been too much of a stretch for Canon to include either a lens hood or a lens case, or both. They do it with other lenses of comparable quality...

I upgraded from kit 18-55mm IS lens to the 17-55mm IS 2.8f because of it's 2.8f rating and focus range.

This is not an L series lens, but it can hold its own. Optically sharp with some softening at edges at extreme ends of it's range (but you'll find that in most non-L series lenses).

What you gain in weight you gain in image quality (glass) and a fast lens (low light capabilities). This lens will be my general use lens until I upgrade to full frame sensor. I use it on Xsi with battery grip and it balances out well. If you have a rebel xsi or xti without a battery grip you may find this lens making your setup unbalanced and heavy fronted.

The only CON is that the IS motors that engage when you press the shutter button half-way down is a bit noisy. You can actually hear the motors going. It's a whisper, but not what I'm used to with the 18-55mm IS I just sold (although it could be that the IS on that did not work?) That said, I sent back the 1st 17-55mm I ordered new thinking something was wrong. The 2nd one I got made the same noise—I figure it's just a noisy lens. Which doesn't really matter because I don't use it in situations where I need total silence.

I say if you're in need of a good general use, fast, great quality lens and you own a REBEL, this is the one. I had others steer me towards a 17-40mm f4.0 L - but I wanted a faster lens (2.8 with IS makes is a nearly a 1.2!) for the weight and wanted a truer wide angle on a APS-C sized sensor. The 17-40 would actually shoot like a 25mm-60mm on a REBEL so it wouldn't be 'ultra' wide angle. You would save nearly 500 dollars if you bought the 17-40, but you'd lose wide angle and the optics are not that different between the two.

There are comparable Sigma and Tamron lenses, I can't vouch for them...

This is the last lens I purchased of the four lenses in my bag but this is the one I use EVERY time I'm inside. It is has a very fast f2.8 and excellent image stabilization allowing you to take clear pictures of at extremely slow shutter speeds as long as your subject isn't moving. I hesitated to buy this lens because of the price and I was hoping to get more zoom but there isn't one made like that that is this fast AND has IS. My recommendation is to just get this lens first and then get a bigger zoom for outside like the Canon 70-300 or 70-200 f2.8L.

This has been an excellent replacement for the slower 18-55IS kit lends that came with my Xsi. With active kids, the f2.8 is a must-have. It's a bit pricey for a non-L lens, but the quality is super-sharp, approaching L. The IS with f2.8 with the 17-55 range is a powerful combo. It's the default lens that stays on my Xsi all the time. Also, fairly lightweight and the black no-red-ring lens is unobtrusive, even with the hood. Love it!

Now I know why I own my Canon 40D, it was to use this lens. It's incredibly well balance with the 40D, focus is lightning fast, the 17 - 55 range is perfect. I also own a Tamron 11 - 18 and a Tamron 70 - 200 for when I need those ranges. This lens will be on there on a daily basis. This is a terrific lens. Sharp at all focal lengths and focusing distances. Good color and good contrast. The stabilizstion almost takes the worry out of shutter speed. If I brace myself, I've been able to get acceptable handheld shots down to 1/4 second. This lens is on my camera 90% of the time.

I bought this lens to take pictures of kids in natural lighting conditions and have been very pleased with the results. It is really a fantastic lens and gives me results on par with my "L" lenses. The IS allows me to shoot hand held at 1/8 seconds at the 55mm zoom ratio and I get better than 60% quality results. Some Light fall off at the corners at the extreme wide angle zoom is the only noticable problem I have seen in any of my pictures.

Great lens but I agree with every one else that for this kind of money Canon should give a lens shade and pouch as part of the package.

Were it not for some odd vignetting, this would be the perfect lens. It's fast, razor sharp, has IS, and has made my life so much easier!! But I get the strangest vignette on some of my pictures when I'm shooting at 2.8 and 17mm - there is a black shadow across the entire bottome of the frame. . .fixable in PS, so I'm not too worried.

I purchased this lens as a replacement for the kit lens on my Digital Rebel XT. I use it for low-light photos - mostly inside shots of my baby daughter, and for outside action shots. The F/2.8 is a key feature in the decision to purchase, along with the IS.

Regarding the zoom ring - when you turn to zoom in our out, there's a point in the middle where it gets "tight" and sticks a little. Once you're on either side of it there's no problem.

I purchased this as an upgrade for the kit lens that came with my 30D. I also use it on my 40D, which has quickly become my primary camera.

Reputable reviewers elsewhere say that this is as sharp as L glass but not rated as an L because of the EF-S limitation. I think the L's tend to be a little beefier as well. This lens is certainly well built, but it's not quite the same as the L's I've owned/handled.

There is no doubt about the image quality of this lens -- it's spectacular. It takes a lot for me to really get excited about a lens, and this one really did the job. It was well worth the investment.

EF-S lenses can only be used on Canon DSLR's with APS-size sensors. They do not create a large enough image circle to cover a full frame sensor. That was my only hesitation in buying this. Although I am way out of the price range for a full frame body, this lens is a big investment and I want it to last a while. Even if I do move to a full-frame body, I seriously doubt that I'll be putting away my APS cameras.

upgraded from 17-85 IS. Gave up range, gained speed and IQ. I am spending a lot less time PP my images. Its very sharp, throughout most of the zoom range, a little less so at 55. My tamron 28-75 is actually a little shaper at 55, same aperture. Focusing is fast and silent. Its prone to dust. some say having a filter on it decreases that. after 4 weeks , I already had a couple of specs in there.

Okay. If you are looking for a wide open, walk about lens and willing to spend for 2.8 and IS, but not want to be limited to the 16-35, this is your baby. L glass in a lighter casing. Having to get the Lens hood separate (and you need it) is really insulting when you are paying ~[$]for a lens.[...]

This is a great everyday lens. It is fast at 2.8 and with the added image stabilization makes for hand holding at low shutter speeds. I would reccomend this lens as your walk around lens for the Canon Rebel XTi.

Somewhat heavy but excellent quality lens for both closer photodocumentation as well as medium range images under lower natural light and flash illumination. Quite crisp, quiet, fast. Seamless interface with the manufacturer's platform 20D. Lens makes the camera. But it comes at a price.

I used this lens the last two weekends for youth basketball photos. I liked that I could shoot individuals & entire teams from the same spot. I decide to buy this lens rather than the 24-70 f/2.8 to get that extra wide angle capability. It leaves a little gap between this lens & my 70-200 f/2.8 but I can't see where that would ever bother me. I do think Canon could afford to include a hood instaed of trying to charge $50 extra for one. (I bought a Chinese knockoff on Ebay for $22 delivered - it works fine.)

You should see the photo I took at another photographer's son's wedding rehearsal. One-thirteen of a second, F2.8, iso 3200. Very little light in the room since they were showing a slide show. But I had to try a shot since my photographer/friend and his wife were standing near the projector, holding each other and watching the screen. Sure, it's got some noise, but I got the moment, and the coolest part is you can see the band of light coming out of the projector AND their expressions.

This lens is definitely L-series quality glass. I believe Canon is reluctant to designate the "L" for the EF-S line for marketing purposes. However build quality is still respectable just not tank-like as in the "L"'s. For a walkaround lens, I wish I had a few more mm's at the long end but that's just being greedy. This lens almost has it all: fast, sharp and Image Stabilized but for a grand I expect the red band. That being said, I am very happy with this lens.

I work with a wedding photographer who said "Don't use your tripod. Let's see what the lens can do". The church was large and dark inside. I shot at 1/8th of a second with the stabilizer on, and I was very happy with the photos. Printed at 4x6, no client would notice that the shots were hand-held. The one drawback is that a photographer must learn how to shoot with the stabilizer. If you shoot too fast, you'll take pictures before the stabilizer has locked on your target.

I've been using this excellent lens for several months, now, and I couldn't be happier with it. I have really been impressed with the photo quality. In addition, this is my first image stabilized lens, and it is outstanding. I ran several tests in low light situations and was very happy with the results. In fact, I was astounded.

I use this lens most of the time.There is quite a bit of dust noticable in the lens but it has no effect on picture quality. I own two Canon L lenses. This is sharper than the L lenses. It is worth the price. Highly recommended.

Fantastic all-around lens. Distortion-free; as sharp as any prime, 2.8 f-stop great for low-light and out-of-focus backgrounds; image stabilization really works. There are times when you simply do not have enough time to set up a tripod... and yet with this lens you can get away not only with usable shots, but actually great ones!

Huge difference over kit lens. Well worth the money. Able to hand hold with tack sharp results in dark theater.
