This was the best purchase I've made since I bought my camera. The USM is quiet and fast, the zoom is smooth, the IS is handy, the optics are clear. Overall a great lens, especially if you can't afford the faster L series. Has a great zoom range as well, which is incredibly useful for event and wedding photography, when you don't have time to switch between lenses.

An OK lens with good image quality in the middle range. The wide end barrels badly and is very soft in the corners. Build quality is excellent and IS helps considerabily, it is a good walk around lens and better than the lower end kit lenses.

Just started using the lens and everything is great. Had it out today on Mt. Evans at 14,250 feet in Colorado. All landscape shots overlooking the Rocky Mountains were clear, sharp and great color.

My wife and I have used this lens for several years and several thousand exposures all over the world. At one point, it got dropped, in a small suitcase, from about 2 metres onto a solid airport floor and started to give intermittent faults that were repaired by Canon [$]. Otherwise, it has proved extremely reliable and durable in the rough and ready world of travelling and use in various conditions including a sand storm in Beijing. The lens is very easy to use, smooth zoom, fast focussing. The aperture is adequate for most purposes. An excellent lens for the Canon 350D or 450D giving a well-balanced combination. Overall, very highly recommended indeed.

Great lens... added it to my arsenal of lenses recently.. as a compliment to my 28-135IS lens, and 50MM lens... for my studio work.. the lens creep is amazingly annoying... and the dust inside the lens is a pain.. but all in all.. a great lens for the price... especially if you can get a used one and save a hundred bucks or so.. I've been using it pretty much exclusively since I bought it.. just have to make sure i photoshop out the dust flecks or darker shots...

I have had this lens for 3 months and there is excessive dust behind the front element. I am very careful with my equipment and clean my camera and lenses after every use. I have heard of several other people who have this lens and have had similar problems. Cannon will not cover cleaning under the warranty and it will cost $120 to $130 (estimate) to have the lens cleaned. This lens cost around [$]. I refuse to spend another $500 a year just to have the lens cleaned on a quarterly basis. Cannon needs to step up and take care on this problem. I have other Cannon lenses that I have owned for 3+ years with no dust problems. Several are less expensive lens then this one. This could be a great street lens if the dust issue would be addressed and a fix put in place.

very nice clarity, lens is slow in any low light, autofocus does not seem as good as my other lenses. Overall, very good images and very good wide angle which is why I purchased the lens.

Perfect focal length range for general use, I rarely use anything else on my 20D. Unfortunately, it won't work on my new 1D Mark III so I have a 24-105 f4L to do the same jobs with that camera. This really is the perfect walking around range especially with a 1.6 (or 1.3) factor. I rarely need to put on my 70-300.

I shot 80% of my pictures in Italy and Hawaii with this lens. Running the images through DxO produced some very nice pictures.

Bought it with the EOS 30D body, and I regret having paid for the 18-55 "basic" lens. This 17-85 is a very sharp, clean, and beautifully stabilized lens that is terrific for candids, a perfect "party lens" for kids' birthdays, etc. Should be offered as the "kit lens" rather than the 18-55!

Very happy with this lens. Have used it with a wide variety of subjects with great results. Excellent for landscapes. Also for closeups if you left your macro home. Some chromatic aberration, particularly at wide end, but this is only seen in large blowups or tight crops, and if you're shooting RAW it's easily corrected in CS2. Not really a problem. This is a good lens.

automatic focus is fast and quiet, however I prefer to use the manual focus most of the time. I find no cons. it is just as described, meets my every expectations. A great walking around lens, I love it.

The Canon EF-S 17mm - 85mm f/4.0-5.6 USM IS is the normal lens for my 20D. I use it all the time for general photography and medium macro photographing. Being an IS lens is very import in low light, low shutter speed and macro situations. It is a winner!

Great all round lens for landscape, documentary and just fun family photos. Love the image stabilization and quick response time focusing. I can focus on my composition and not sweat the low light long exposure situations. This is especially helpful in catching my granddaughter in candid shots.

Overall an OK lens for the money. Nice rugged heft and construction, but not too heavy. This was an upgrade as I did not want the base lens (17-55) that normally comes with the kit. At F/4 - F/5.6 it's definately on the slow side, but image stablization helps, and works well. We've produced good results hand holding down to 1/10th second. When viewing and zooming into an image shot at full wide I find subject focus to be a little soft. I'm not sure if this is normal for lenses in this price range, or if it's a common problem for all lenses when shot in full wide.

Has been a favorite for traveling light with a usefull working range of focal lengths. Have taken on several trips as my only lens when size and weight is important. Also avoids changing lenses in extrem negative weather conditions that can cause problems for an exposed sensor.
