Due to all the negative hype that this lens used to receive, I didn't consider it a viable alternative to the F/2.8L version until I had the chance to use one in the field. It has proven to be one of the fastest auto-focussing lenses that I've ever used, and combined with its light weight and portability falls into the same area of versatility as the 300mm f/2.8L IS (possibly even more so, given its weight of just 2 kgs) It is tack-sharp and contrasty (contrary to some reports). The only feature I would like to have seen is the Focus Preset arrangement found on L Series Super Teles. It may not be an L lens, but it is in the same price bracket. That aside, it's a real little gem.

Used it on a 5D Mark 2 while whale watching and tracking polar bears on my trip in the european arctic (Iceland, Spitzbergen). Surprisingly light weight and excellent handling but yet resulting in very sharp pictures. Will never leave for a trip without it.
