Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - White Box - with U.S.A. Warranty:

I bought this lens to use as my sort of all purpose walk about lens. For me its a pretty sharp, easy to handle lens. The VR works well hand held, and other than being a bit slower (5.6)
at 105mm its been a great lens and im quite happy with it. Also for the price you really cant beat it!

More suitable for general purpose day-to-day photography IMO. Not bad for what you pay but you still left to be desired. It is in fact kind of good compromise between quality and price. If you are seriously into photography and want longterm investment you may want to look something else though. I would recommend this to a friend but with reservation.

For about [$] this is not a bad lens at all. VR is certainly a big plus for me but a metal lens mount would have been better. Overall so far I have no real complaint about this lens FWIW, yet I have to run a real test.

A great lens to upgrade to if you are looking for something to fill a gap between the 18-55 mm kit lens and a 70-200mm telephoto lens.

I needed a lens I could leave on my D300 all day for general stuff, I do a lot of travel and take lots of pictures, I now only carry 2 lenses the 18-105 and my 80-200 f2.8, this is one great lens, that does everything Nikon claims and then some.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - White Box - with U.S.A. Warranty:

I bought this as an upgrade to my D40's stock 18-55 non VR lens, and am very happy with it. As a wider range zoom and a much cheaper alternative to the widely praised 18 - 200 VR, this lens far exceeds the poor review Ken Rockwell gives it.

Since it will live on the camera body the non-reinforced mount isn't an issue for me. Focus is quick and quiet, and the zoom is smooth and linear with a solid feel and no creep, although a plasticky "bump" at both ends. The 18-105 range is more than adequate for landscape and casual outdoor shooting, and the VR allows for a bit more flexibility for indoor low-light shooting.

It fits nicely in hand, and although it about doubled the weight and bulk of my rig it feels very nicely balanced and still fits well in my waist pack.

After 100 shots or so I'd have to say that I can't anticipate any drawbacks, and expect to leave this on the D40 body for the foreseeable future. Since the front element is large and right "out there", I'd recommend a skylight filter for protection right away.

Try it out before you rule it out!

Received this lens as part of the D90 kit. As a beginner lens this would be perfect. It is in that intermediate category that makes it somewhat versatile. If you pair this lens with a 50mm f/1.8D and a nice zoom lens, you would have the basis for shooting most anything.
