Nicely sharp, not as much so as the more expensive Nikkor wide-angle zooms, but significantly cheaper, so I think the value proposition is certainly there. I just used this at a wedding with a D700, and while there's some mild distortion at 18mm, it still takes nice event/outdoor photos. The construction feels a little weak compared to some of my other Nikkor lenses with more metal and less plastic, but on the upside it's lightweight for the construction. I bought this used from Adorama for basically a DX-lens price, and as I shoot film as well it's nice to be able to use it on my film body. Recommended as a first wide-angle zoom.

For the money it cannot be beat. It performs as one would expect from a lens of this type.
