I really wanted a wide angle lens to do portraits and landscape and macro photos. I was a little reluctant to purchase this lens because of the low price. I am so happy that I purchased it. It was exactly what I wanted.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Check out any compact sensor DSLR these days and you'll find a lens with these specs. There's a reason. Light, compact and versatile, this 18-55 will cover just about anything in day to day photography - travel & landscape, and event and portrait.

My D40 came with the non-VR model which I have on long term loan, and even though I enjoy my 18-105 I decided to supplement it with this refurb. Other than packaging and the 90 day warranty there is nothing to suggest this lens is anything but perfect. Function is flawless, and I don't expect any issues in the future.

At 2/3 the size and heft of my larger zoom this lens makes for a package that slips in my pack more easily and competently covers all the basics. Focus is quiet and nearly instantaneous, and VR adds just a touch of sharpness when I've had that 4th cup of coffee or light is marginal.

Yes, you can ding it for the plastic mount or lack of speed, but don't be too quick to jump off this fine "stock" lens. You may find you come back to it. I did.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is a super lightweight lens. It lends itself very well to travel photography for most people. I only take my expensive gear out if I need to. If not, I grab this inexpensive lens, my inexpensive 55-200mm (also very light) and a D90. This kit is small, lightweight and versatile compared to my D3 and the glass/metal Nikkors. The only reason I did not give this lens a 5 star rating is the lens mount. It is plastic and seems rather weak. I understand this reduces weight over a metal mount which is one of the lens' strongest selling points. [...].I have found the lens to be acceptably sharp at all but the the widest apertures. By acceptable, I mean a print size up to 8x10 with minimal cropping. Everything gets soft when blown up too big. Low light is so-so. You are not going to get great low light performance with any 3.5-5.6 lens, it's simple physics folks. If low light is critical, you will have to shell out for a faster lens with 2.8 minimum.Auto focus is fast and accurate. VR is not necessary unless you have a tendency to be a little unstable or shoot with long exposures. At the focal length of 18-55mm, camera shake is not usually a problem. When you get into the 55-200mm range, VR is a good option since the longer lens and it's light weight will cause any camera/lens movement to show up in soft images.Overall, I like this lens and would recommend it. Just be extra careful with the lens mount and you should get years of great service from it.Have fun!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

The original kit lens prior to the VR version was a good quality lens. Surprisingly for a kit lens it offers some pretty sharp photos. You will not be disappointed in this little kits lens. It is easy to carry and is a good all around lens to keep on the front of the camera. It offers a limited but very useful range between 18 - 55mm. You can go superwide and catch some decent ladscapes or family type pictures. But you can also use this a knock off macro lens in a pinch. It delivers superb quality images at very close range. A really good lens. Not particularly fond of the lack of low light capability for this lens. It does fine, but not fantastic. For all other uses, this baby lens is OUTSTANDING!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Ok lens if bought refurbished from Adorama for [$] and used on a 10 MP or less body. This lens is OK for up to 8x10 prints, poor thereafter. This lens just does not resolve detail well. As you would expect, the 18-70/3.5-5.6 AFS DX is better, so is the 16-85 VR. Don't believe Ken Rockwell's hype, this is no wonder-lens. AF not the best in low light, VR isn't bad. 12 MP bodies will readily reveal its IQ shortcomings. Watch out for the plastic mount, it won't survive much abuse. Wouldn't trust this mount on an overseas trip (bumping, etc.). I have had two of these lenses, one new, one refurbished, both yield identical results. If you need a mid-range zoom and are remotely critical of IQ, stay clear of this one.

The only difference between this and new is the box.

This is a great all around lens, giving the full format 35mm equivalent of a 28-80mm zoom lens. This covers the moderate wide angle to portrait focal lengths within one inexpensive lens, without the expense and trouble of carrying and changing multiple lenses.

The major drawback that I see is the relatively high maximum aperture, although this is only an issue in low light.

I would recommend this highly to anyone who cannot afford the high end lenses.

I received a non-VR lens with a kit. I've used it recently on an extended trip back east, Washington, D.C. and Virginia. This non-VR lens worked well and I was very satisfied with the results. Combined with my D40 it made a grest travel combination. I purchased this VR version becasue I have some other VR lens and wante that feature on the 18mm-55mm lens. I expect to do some overseas travel and want light lenses to travel with. The photos I've taken with this VR edition have been as good as the non-VR. My wife dropped her D40/18-200mm lens on a trip to Turkey and lost the automatic focus. An emergency back up lens is not a bad idea to have if it is small and light so I plan to carry the non-VR lens in addition to this new one..

The lens delivers everything I could ask for at this price point. The refurbished lens looks and works like a new one.
As far as use it focuses very fast, the VR works great, and the color and skin tones are very pleasing.
The plastic lens mount is not my favorite, but seems to work just fine. Just don't pick up the camera by the lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I've had a similar lens (w/o VR on my D40), and was trying to save money by buying the refurbished model. The lens itself is great, but it comes with the cheapest looking generic cap I've ever seen. It's like a thin piece of plastic and barely stays on. Any differences from a brand new model should really be specified in the description.

This is my second purchase of the same model lens. I use the camera and lens for work. More than once, my Nikon D60 and this type lens tumbled from the front seat of my jeep to the floor with never a problem! I'll try to be more careful with this one, but in my opinion, the occasional drop, thump, or bump will go unnoticed by this lens. Don't worry about the refurbished moniker, everything I have bought [...] that was refurbished has been just like new!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I bought this lens as an upgrade to my dated 18-55 non VR kit lens that came with my D50, and it is a vast improvement. VR is truly an amazing thing. I can make sharp hand held shots at f/3.5 in medium indoor lighting at as low as 1/6 second (1/2 with monopod). With the non VR model I could do no such thing, and could maybe only go as slow as 1/30-1/40. I see only 2 stops being advertised as useful gain, but in real use I find it to be much more than 2 stops, especially with a steady hand. Even at faster shutter speeds, the sharpness is further improved over the non VR 18-55 lens, in the range of 1/30 up to as high as 1/125. Even at those speeds the non VR would often pick up hand shake.

I have no complaints with this fantastic lens. It does its job well.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

While the lens is cheap plastic (you can feel the parts slightly bow under your fingers if you squeeze the lens), you can't expect anything different for the price.

The lens is a fairly quick and sharp auto-focus. Bokeh isn't unacceptable and it's nothing that can't be fixed in post if you get an oddly sharp blur from some reflective piece of metal. Under usual daylight and dawn/dusk conditions it out performs anything that I or most people could really squeeze out of it. Under these lighting conditions a better lens wouldn't result in better photos.

The greatest drawback is how slow it is. 18/3.5 is acceptable since you're so wide, but 50/5.6 is infuriating. If you're considering this lens you probably aren't swimming in cash and so also aren't using a camera that can reasonably shoot 1600/3200 ISO. All of this means that if you want to do anything in low light (twilight or indoors) that will require the 35-55 mm range you'll have to use the flash to get sharp photos. 1/15 and 1/30 are painfully common figures when I'm inside with friends hanging out, and neither of them are suitable for photographing people who are acting normally and aren't posing. I can't reasonably use a flash because no one wants a flash going off in their face every minute or so. If you have a nice flash you can reliably bounce off the ceiling (SB-600?), go for it. But I think if you've dropped 200$ on a flash, you probably have cash to spare for a better lens.

Value is performance over price. With that in mind, this might be the best value lens ever. Just keep in mind that's in large part because price is so low.

Don't worry about the whole refurbished deal. Mine was in perfect condition.

This is my first lens on my first SLR. Based on my vast experience this lens will be perfect for anybody looking begin working with a SLR.

The VR helps out a lot in low light, and the bokeh - again, this is judging from my sample size of 1 - is good.

I bought mine refurbished, with no complaints.

Refurb lens had sticky zoom and focus at first, and wouldn't switch from Auto to Manual focus. Fine after a bit of use, although the autofocus is definitely slower than my non VR 18-55. The VR is the reason for this lens. I do a lot of available-light food photography, and this is perfect. Especially at the price.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

PROS (* indicates the ones that are very important to me)

Image Quality*--I am very pleased with the image quality of this lens. I have not yet had time to conduct tests in a controlled environment but my preliminary field tests indicate that this lens will give me the high quality images in outdoor sunlight, under studio lighting conditions, with the built-in flash unit, and with external flash units.

Vibration Reduction*--This is my first lens for my Nikon with this feature.

Focal Length*--18-55mm is a very usable focal length range. This range is good for the times when I only want to carry one DX digital SLR body and one lens.

One Lens Set Up--Normally I carry a compact digital camera when I need to carry a light photographic load of one lens and one body. However, if for some reason I need to shoot with an SLR, I can take the battery pack off my SLR and use this light-weight lens.

Two Lens Set Up--Normally I carry a 20-35mm f/2.8 and a 80-200mm f/2.8 when I carry only two lenses and a DX body. If I need to carry a lighter and less expensive photographic load, I can substitute the 18-55mm for the 20-35 and substitute the smaller and lighter 75-150mm Series E for the 80-200. As an added bonus, the 18-55mm and the 75-150mm have the same 52mm filter size.

Filter Size--The 52mm filter size is perfect for my filter inventory.

Close-Ups--Even though I did not buy this lens with close-ups in mind, it is comforting to know that at the 55mm focal length, this lens can fill the view frame with an object as small as 6cm.

Price*--Less than $100 for an auto focus zoom lens with vibration reduction was too good a deal to ignore. Plus, the low price makes this lens the one to use in a situation where a more expensive lens may be damaged, lost, or stolen.

CONS (* indicates the ones that are very important to me)

DX lens--This is the first DX lens that I have ever purchased and will probably be the only DX lens that I will ever own because I prefer FX lenses. I prefer FX lenses because I want all my lenses to work not only on my DX cameras but also on my Nikon film cameras and my future FX digital camera.

G Lens--I avoid buying G lenses because I cannot use them on my older Nikon film cameras that need the aperture ring to set the f/stop. This is only my second G lens. The 14-24mm f/2.8 was my first.

Bayonet Mount--Plastic! Now I have nothing against plastic. In fact, I would rather have a thick tough plastic than a thin weak metal. However, I have heard too many horror stories about plastic lens mounts breaking.

Aperture--f/3.5 to f/5.6 is too slow for a maximum aperture. Also, I prefer a zoom lens with a constant f/stop rather than a variable one.

Lens Barrel--The lens barrel does not rotate during zooming but it does during focusing. However, the barrel rotates so little that you can still screw a flower petal type lens hood into the 52mm thread.

Manual Focus--The small focus ring makes it very difficult to focus manually. I found it easier to focus if I tightly screwed in a lens hood and twisted the lens hood instead of the small ring.

Lens Distance Scale--None

Lens Depth-of-Field Scale--None

Vibration Reduction--I hate that little thump that happens when you press the shutter button half way to focus and then remove your finger because you decide not to take the photo.

Durability/Reliability*--This lens does not feel like it was built to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. Plus, the vibration control and the built-in auto focus motor are two additional moving parts that can break. However, the price of this lens is so low that if anything breaks, it is just as easy to replace the lens as it is to repair it.

Comments:

Many of the Cons I listed would have been major issues if this had been a high-dollar lens. Since the price of this lens is so low, and the performance of this lens is so high, these Cons can easily be overlooked. In fact, I thought this lens performed so well for the low price that I bought a second one so I would have a back-up to my back-up lens.

Bottom Line: I highly recommend this undervalued, future cult classic lens.

I expected this lens to take a backseat to the 50-200mm I purchased with the camera. I thought a stock lens would be junk. But quite the opposite! This little lens has shocked me with its ability to take great shots, its versatility and high quality pics. It has handled 80% of all my pics. Great lens for taking shots of the kids - quick and responsive. City shots are a snap, tall buildings, water fountains, flowers beds, all automatic. We went down to San Antonio's riverwalk, and I never changed to the larger lens.

I feel that this lens always focuses my pictures in a soft focus. It doesn't feel as crisp as it should be when shooting shallow DOF. Although, the autofoucs feature is fast and reliable. This is important to me because I have trouble focusing manually so I need something that's going to focus what I want.

Great lens that came with my D5000. It works well for indoor, outdoor, and even night shots. Vibration reduction works well, allowing night shots with shutter speeds as low as 1/5s without a tripod. The wide angle is nice for indoor shots, where you just can't step back from the subject. Outdoors, autofocus is instant, and it's always right on. Haven't had a blurry photo yet.

I have to say though that the whole world seems to love and use these 3.5-5.6 zooms and I'm growing sick of them.
Next I'm getting a fast 35mm (equal to 50mm on digital camera)to up my shutter speeds and increase my depth of focus a bit.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

The low cost of this lens is totally out of synch with it's high level of performance! The lens is sharp as a tack, consistent focusing, excellent color resolution and a pleasure to use. It may have a plastic base but if handled with care that will not be a problem. This lens may be the biggest bargain on the market today!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is a great lens useful for many purposes. Sure, you could go with a much more sophisticated, expensive piece of glass, but this lens weighs next to nothing, and costs next to nothing. Thus, take it anywhere because it's light and don't worry about expensive cases, lens coats, etc. because if you break it, just buy a new one. Compared to some more expensive lenses in the same relative focal distances, there is little to nothing to have qualms about - fast autofocus, accurate AF, little distortion, which can be easily fixed with PS or DxO, and it's light. The downside is it's somewhat fragile - it's not built like the 2.8 AF-S lenses at all, I am very careful with all of my equipment and I broke one of these lenses handling it. However, with a little more care, this lens will give you no problems. Highly recommended for all users.

Everything works great on this refurbished lens. I love having the VR feature because it gives me an extra f-stop or two (needed with most lenses for indoor shooting.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This Lens has a smooth zoom, with settings that are nicely spaced, they don't bunch up at the ends.I don't find the switch from auto focus,to manual to be troublesome,in fact manual focus is quite easy, with one finger. With the D90 it is rarely necessary to switch to manual. The VR really works, especially for hand held closeups of flowers. This lens focuses crazy close. It is tack sharp, and convenient to use. It's fast enough, I've had no problem on cloudy days, photographing people. It's a great, inexpensive, walking around lens. The refurbished version I bought is pristine, just like the D90 that I also bought refurbished. I just ordered the 55-200 VR to go with it, and then I will have all the zoom range I will ever need.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm -" 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I use this lens to fill the gap between my Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and Nikon 70-200 VR f/2.8. I was not a heavy normal zoom user until I tried this refurbished copy because it was so affordable. It is sharper than my 18-200 VR, lighter and I am not afraid bring it around on my foreign trips because it does not look so fancy. It is a great supplement to my light kit (D80, SB-400, 50mm f/1.8 and 90mm f/2.8). I actually use this more than my 18-200 now because it is so much sharper and with better color rendition IMHO. It is not the best when it comes to construction, but for the publishable quality it gives for the price I got it, I could not complain. When I'm shooting my wife's fashion products, I find that this little gem actually delivers sharp, detailed Net-publishable images with accurate colors with even just at times an SB-400 to supplement it. I use it together with my 70-200 VR, 90mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.8 for this purpose. Overall, this is an unexpected but nice surprise of a lens for me.

I received a DOA lens. The apeture lever was not engaged to the iris. Therefore apeture was stuck closed down to F22/36 (min. opening). [...] I've used the lens itself and if you get one that works, its a fine lens. The VR gives me only one extra stop on this lightweight lens though.

Cheap construction but seems to hold up well. It would be nice if it wasn't a G model. An aperature ring is surely needed when using an extension tube. Overall the lens is a great value and good to keep with you at all times.
