Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This lens was my first purchase after my D3100, and I believe that it's my best choice for a new lens for my Nikon. The f/1.8 is perfect for Portraits and Night Photography, the only con, is that the autofocus doesn't works in my D3100, because the lens doesn't has the motor, but it's a detail for my.
If you have patience, you must wait for the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G, with Silent Wave Motor technology (SWM) for fast and precise autofocus.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is the 2nd Nikon prime that I have bought new, and the first one from this site. I must say, this lens is fantastic. I just finished my first photo shoot with this lens, I'm currently using it on a D200 and the pictures have come out super sharp with killer color and really good Bokeh. For the price this lens is a must have for any Nikon with an auto focus motor built in. If you have one that doesn't, I would stick with the 35mm 1.8 AF-S, which will get you very similar results (I know, its the other prime I have for my D40) Or get the new 50mm 1.8 AF-S.

I find that the auto focus on this is MUCH faster with the camera's motor over a lens with a SWM built in, and I am loving that. Thanks to this mens and the 35mm AF-S I rarely if ever touch a zoom any more, although I will probably get the 70-300 eventually for sports.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is one of the best lenses in terms of value for your dollar! The lens is inexpensive and does not have VR; however, it is light-weight, small and convenient.
It is very sharp even at it's widest 1.8 and tack sharp from 4.0 on!
It provides excellent portraits (although the fix focal length requires you to sometimes move in close to your subject -- depending on your shot). Place on a tripod, and you will get one of the sharpest picture you have seen!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I have just recently started taking classes to really improve my photography and it was recommended to buy a prime lens. This is a great lens to start with; it's amazing how much better it is then any of the kit lenses. My pictures are much clearer using the 50mm 1.8 compared to my kit lens. I would eventually like to upgrade to the 1.4 but for the money the 1.8 is the way to go, especially when you are just starting out!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I really don't think you'll find a better bargain than this lens. I had been shooting high school hockey games, using either a 70-300 f4 or a 55-200 f4 lens. Since I realized most of my shooting was in the 55 to 70mm range, I wanted to give this lens a try which would allow me to shoot at an e.i. of 400- 500 instead of my usual 1600. It is a great reduction in noise, and the quality of the shots are so much better. I had forgotten how nice it is to have fast lenses.

So many people told me to get a Prime lens, but I waited. Mostly because my D40 couldn't autofocus with them. I upgraded (temporarily) to a D90 and bought this lens with it. WOW, blown away. This lens really didn't leave the camera until I returned the D90 to buy the D7000 that is on the way. It is so good, I went ahead and picked up the 35mm version too, to use on the D40 and to also have something a little more wide open on the D7000.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is a great prime lens, and I especially like it for shooting portraits. Everyone says 105mm is the optimal portrait lens, but I beg to differ. If you can get close enough to your subject and they are comfortable with you (which is how I like to work), the 50mm is just fine. I would have liked the f/1.4, but save some money and buy the f/1.8 -- you won't be disappointed!

I am shooting indoor sports at this time, with a D70, in average to poor lighting situations and this lens is perfect. I spoke with several professional photographers and this lens was suggested by all of them. It gives me great shots and is rugged. My camera, specifically the lens, was hit by a basketball during a game last week and the lens was unaffected. If you shoot anything in low light then I highly recommend this lens. It's a great lens at a great price! You won't go wrong with this one.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This lens is the perfect portrait lens for indoor and outdoor use.

50mm Focal Length
50mm on an APS-C sensor translates to 75mm on a full frame. What this means for indoor people photography is that for capturing faces and expressions of one or two people, this lens is great. If you need to capture more of a subjects' body/clothing or 3-8 people, a 30mm - 35mm lens would be more suitable.

f/1.8 - f/22 Aperture
f/1.8 is a very fast lens. Nikon makes an f/1.4 50mm as well, but I recommend this lens over it(more on that later). f/1.8 is much faster than f/2.8 (think Nikon 24mm-70mm f/2.8)and allows you to utilize faster shutter speeds. If you take pictures in RAW, this comes in very handy as it's much easier to fix exposure issues than focus issues post processing. I also have an SB-800 flash which produces amazing photos when used properly, but is heavy, bulky, and takes a few seconds to mount to the camera. With this lens, I rarely need to take the flash out. Regarding f/1.4 alternatives, depth of focus is very shallow at f/1.8 and gets worse at f/1.4. Although you have even better low light performance with f/1.4, it is more difficult to get a subject in focus. For example, at f/1.4, if your camera focuses on a person's ears, their nose will be out of focus. If there are two people posing and one is slight in front of the other, one person will be out of focus. It is better to increase the ISO setting rather than going with a wider aperture at this point. If cost isn't a concern, by all means go with the f1.4D lens (AF only not AF-S), it will cost you $200 more, but you will not be missing much by sticking with the f/1.8. Just think about a 400hp car vs a 500hp car, not too much real world difference.

AF Lens (not AF-S)
This lens focuses quickly and is quite sharp. This AF lens does not have a silent wave motor built in (not an AF-S). The biggest concern for buyers to watch out for is that it will not auto focus with AF-S only bodies (Nikon D40, D60, D3000, D5000). The camera will attach ok, but it will not auto focus. Of secondary concern is the noise of the auto focus, which is higher than an AF-S lens, but not too objectionable.

Manual Aperture Ring (D type lens)
Nikon removes the manual aperture ring on some lenses to reduce weight, reduce size, and reduce costs on some lenses. The "D" indicator means this lens has a manual aperture ring. For 99% of users, D or non D lenses don't make a difference. If you dabble in macro photography a popular technique is to reverse mount your lens (using a reverse ring mount for ~$10 bucks) and put your lens on backwards. You can then manually adjust the aperture and shutter to create the perfect macro shot. This is definitely not a decision making feature, but it was quite nice to discover this lens could take awesome macro shots when reversed.

Image Quality
I pixel peep most my photos and the images from this lens are extremely sharp. Also there is very little distortion around the edges. And vignetting is almost nonexistent. That is to be expected from such a simple design. There are only 7 aperture blades, so some lens flares show up as being seven sided polygons. Bokeh is also very nice (smooth and even toned) on this lens, especially at f/2.8 and below.

Quality
It's a $100-$130 lens, so the body is plastic and is made in China. I find when mounting the lens, it's a bit tight on my D90 body. My biggest gripe is that some stickers are peeling off (like the serial number on the bottom) which is annoying, but doesn't affect performance in any way.

Bottom Line
If you are thinking about getting this lens, just get it. At ~$125, you can't go wrong. If you are thinking about the f/1.4 equivalent, if $200 is not a big deal, go for the upgrade (why not?). If you need the AF-S lens, then you'll have to pay $300-$350 more, so be sure that a prime lens (fixed focus) is something you really want, rather than buying a zoom lens. If you're thinking about the 35mm equivalent, this is more a "face" camera. Just ask yourself whether you capture people's faces or more group photos.

Affordable and versatile enough for many shooting uses. Get it if you think you want it. This lense makes it on my camera frequently because of it's high fun-factor. It's been suggested to buy this lense over a cheap zoom lense as your first lense especially if you buy a more capable camera, so do your research fellows and have fun with your photos. Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Though this lens is made of plastic, it feels very tight and well constructed, and I have no worries of it being damaged under normal use, as long as I don't drop it. The auto focus is one of my favorite parts of this lens. It is very quick, and almost always tracks the correct way with very little seeking to find focus. It is also very lightweight, though I am not sure if that is good or bad. Bokeh performance is excellent with this lens! Like some have reported, it does make "soft" images wide open at f/1.8, but backed down to ~f/2.8 the focal point becomes nice and crisp. Sometimes a soft image is good though, so I can't really call that bad, just a characteristic of the lens. Of course low light performance is its best asset.

This lens is really suited for nearly any activity. Indoor, low light shooting, weddings and special events, landscape and wildlife, night shooting with long exposures, and with the reversing ring it becomes an amazing macro lens. I haven't experienced the macro abilities first hand but have seen the resulting pictures from other people and I am impressed.

For the price of this lens, it is a no-brainer. If you haven't already done so, place your order! Quite literally the best $100 investment I have made in photography.

This should have been the first lens I ever bought. I am selling all my Nikon zoom lenses in favor of the cheaper, lighter prime lenses and this was my first prime lens purchase.

The lens is tack sharp at all times and has a very fast response to autofocus changes. The lens works like a charm in low-light situations using the large f/1.8 aperture.

I would recommend this lens for shooting large group portraits and sweeping landscapes. The f/1.8 aperture allows me to shoot at 200 ISO up to about 30 minutes after sunset!

This is a fun, sharp lens! At 1.8, it goes just a little fuzzy, especially on the edges, but by 2.8 this thing is super sharp. Terrific bokeh as you would expect from a fast prime.

As an added bonus, if you pop on a BR-2A reversing ring, the lens makes a dandy VERY close focusing macro...cool!

I would recommend this lens without hesitation!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Most everyone loves it, for good reason. It's sharp, accurate, and makes dusk look like a bright day with the widest apertures. However, on a nikon crop sensor, the focal length is an incredibly awkward 80mm. While I love tight crops, it's far too long for general shooting. It takes great head-shot portraits from a few feet away, and even the most uninspiring backgrounds fade into glorious bokeh when you know what to look for. It's a great lens, and I'll love it for my future full-frame camera, but in the meantime, my fast lens for low light is too long to be of much use. I didn't get the 35/1.8 because I don't want to buy into too many DX lenses, but now I'm wondering if it wouldn't have been a much better purchase for my style of shooting until I can get either Nikon's fantastic 35/2 or even a 24 or 28 1.8. I had to purchase my first dslr and all of my camera gear hurriedly in a few days before leaving the country for several months, so I didn't have time to find out my focal preferences before hand, so it's my own fault, and I won't hold that against the lens. If you have an FX camera, get it unhesitatingly, as it's still a brilliant lens for pennies compared to the cost of your body. If you're using a DX body, make sure you don't intend to use it as a fast normal lens, because that's not what it'll do.

this lens is very sharp throughout its range. whereas most lens backed all the way down in f stop, get undesirably blurry, at 1.8, you can have some real fun with the smoothness of the diffusion of light in this lens. you even get a beautiful glow from directional light in the frame. I have tested and compared both the afs version for $439 and this one, and sorry to say, this is sharper.

I bought this because of other reviews and I figured that for the price I couldn't really lose. I love using this lens. It's light, fast, and fun. On a DX lens (I use it on a D90) it's a great portrait lens. Backgrounds look great, images are very sharp. I am finding that this lens stays on my camera now more than any others. It's very sharp and gives nice bokeh. Throw on an extension tube and it works pretty well for macro work as well. If you're thinking about it, buy it, you won't regret it.

What a break from walking around with my heavy 18-270 Tamron. Camera was much lighter, sharp pictures, no problems with auto focus on my D90 ( big problems with auto focus with my Tamron, very slow and will miss shots ). I bought this lens when I owned a Nikon D40 and it was very fun to use. The depth of filed is incredible. With the D40 it was a manual focus lens which was the only draw back, but when I upgraded to my D90 it was now autofocus. With the auto focus it is very quick for focusing and very sharp. Wonderful lens and no regrets on the purchase.

Sharp! Stopped down to f/2.8 sharpness is good, (f/1.8 is a little soft, but great for low light & shallow DOF). By f/3.5, it's as sharp as lenses that cost almost $2,000 like the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, which I've used for a couple years. Don't take my word for it; check out dpreview.com's lens sharpness & chromatic aberration tests on this lens, & others. The AF is fast & accurate. (It might search a little in really hard situations, but no more than any other lens). On a DX camera, this lens is 75mm. equivalent; & because DX only uses the center of the lens, it is using the sharpest part.No barrel or pincushion distortion & very little chromatic aberration. Very little corner softness; & very little falloff in the corners.Seven blade (not rounded) Aperture so bokeh (out of focus areas) is good, but not great. The best lens for the money period.

Nice and lightweight. Great deal for the price. Photos come out nice and crisp as long as you keep the aperature to one to two stops past the max but it is nice to have such a wide aperature for low light shots and sporting events in doors without using flash. Quick focus but construction seems to be a little on the weak side but handle with care and it'll last a very long time.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This lens produces very sharp images so long as you use it in the mid range of f-stops (i.e. f/4 - f/16). However, if you are considering this lens for low light applications where you plan to use it at f/1.8, the images are noticeable soft and (to me) almost unusable. I tried 2 versions of this lens and had the same result. For the price, this is a great lens. However, there is a reason that good prime glass costs way more than [...]!

I was not sure what lens to buy the 1.8 or 1.4. I went for the 1.8 and have no regrets. I could not bring myself to pay 300ish more dollars for a extra half inch of depth of field. I am very happy with my lens and the money I feel I saved at the same time. I can take a picture of a face and the eyes will be sharp and the ears will blur. Awesome lens.

This is a great lens at a phenominal price. This lens is far better than the kit lenses that are provided with your camera. Its autofocus is very fast. Overall performance of this lens is superb. The only slight downside is that it's a little tougher to get attach to your camera than other lenses, but its really not that big of a deal.

I used this for a couple of events so far and in dark situations, it is sooo fast. It's my first time using an auto-focus 50mm that opens up so much so I'm not sure I was ready to compensate my enthusiasm for the wide aperture while keeping the narrow DOF in mind. Nonetheless it's an excellent lens. It (relatively) made a lot of noise at first (probably because it was new) during the auto focusing but it's real quiet now.

I absolutely fell in love with this lens. The resulting images are so crisp and the quality and color are great. I bought this lens for lower light situations as all I had was the 18-55 kit lens and a 200mm zoom 3.5-5.6.
It works fantastic and gets some really beautiful shots that otherwise would have been different due to the flash. I have been using it on my D60 so it does not auto focus which is the only downfall I have but I plan on upgrading eventually so I think of it as an investment.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

The kit lens that comes with the nikon D60 is okay, but the aperature is not large enough for the dramatic thin depth of field. This lens solves that problem. It also makes a great indoor lens, when light is limited. The 50mm zoom is perfect for close up, portraits, or candid shots (as long as your not standing right next to the subject). The only way this lens could be better is if its autofocus would work with the D60. But of you have a D90, then it doesn't matter. The focus is so crisp, the absence of autofocus is not that annoying, plus since you don't have a zoom ring the focus ring the only thing you have to futz with.

I picked up this lens because I regard it as the best bang for the buck lens that should be in anyone's camera bag. Very fast AF. It's a fast lens. I can use it indoors and it just gobbles up ambient lighting. Takes beautiful, sharp, sharp pictures. This is an incredible lens. Again, a must have, cheap lens to have in your bag. The one gripe is that it is plasticky, but it doesn't feel cheaply made at all. 5 out of 5 in my book!

This lens is good for what it is designed for. I read multiple reviews before buying, and I am not sad that I did. It speaks for itself. The pictures will give detail that perhaps most people would rather suppress about themselves. If your subject has flaws, then believe you me, this lens will highlight it, and then perhaps you can mask those flaws post-processing. But don't let this deter you from trying the lens itself. The lens does not lie, or at least not this one. What it sees, it truly sees and gives you the naked truth, whether your subjects accepts it or not.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is one of the oldest platforms Nikon has in glass. The 1.8 f-stop is great in low light without having to run ISO up the scale. Great for picturs of the kids, small group photos (unless you have a lot of room to move way back for larger groups) or anything 50mm is suitable for - the hardest part for some will be having to "zoom with your feet" as cheap zoom lenses seem to come on every camera. This is a must have in every photographer bag.

You can't replace this lens for portraits. I carry two lens with my Nikon D50, my 18-200mm VR lens and this f1.8 50mm lens. The 18-200mm lens is extremely versatile, but cannot replace the shallow depth of field for soft flattering portraits with this 50mm lens. VR is also useless for moving subjects in low lights, such as children indoors.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I do love this lens. At first I thought it was DOA. because I got an aperture error, and the camera wouldn't do anything. This was because I was playing with the lens when I first opened it up, sorry that's just the kid in me. I moved the aperture ring off of the f/22 position.

The aperture ring is for the pro level cameras only. the D80 operates the aperture in the camera, and if the lens is not set to the smallest setting the system acts like something is wrong, the lens does have a lock, that can insure against moving the ring, nice feature for me.

Many people have ran in to this just like me, and I found the solution very quickly, go Nikonians, also rest-assured that this is a full functioning lens on the D80, I know the D40 and D40x do not operate the auto focus on this lens not sure on the D60 but I think it is ok, but that is a limitation of the camera not the lens.

In summary I love this lens. On many peoples recommendation, this is the second lens I bought, because so many people say it is the most bang for you buck, and one of the most useful lenses you will buy. And now I can say I totally agree.

Note to zoom users: get ready to walk. It is kinda weird.

My wife got this lens for me for Father's Day. I was lucky enough to get it a few weeks early. It's tiny. I don't plan to use it as a "daily carry" or "general use" lens for I have my Nikon 18-200 VR for that. I wanted this lens for special images that need to show off detail. I practiced with it tonight, on a tripod. I took some close-ups of my watch at different F-stops. 4-5.6 seemed to outshine other setting, at least for my project. Anyway, I managed to obtain one of the "sharpest" images I've ever taken, period.
It's a keeper! And best of all, unlike Canon's version, our Nikon has a metal mount.

I just made the switch from 35mm to digital.
This 50mm lens is a great general purpose lens. Since it's a fix lens, it makes you think about the composition, and yes, you end up moving around to "frame it" just right. Remember the famous words: "best wide-angle ? two steps backwards" .. This lens is absolutely amazing in capturing light where there seem to be none. You cannot "break" the law of physics, so if you want to take a shot in low-poor light, and keep the ISO low, that means long times, and you should have a tripod, however this lens makes it a lOT easier. Buy it, use it, have fun doing it !

This lens works as a great 'normal' lens on a full frame camera, and a great portrait lens on an APS-C sensor camera. It's lightweight and really fast with f/1.8 which really works great in low light, or to throw a background out of focus. These days with good zoom lenses, many people have forgotten how great a fast 50mm prime lens is! Back in the day, that's really all we had, and we did OK. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ready to give up my 24-70mm zoom, but this lens is really a great one to have. Besides the price is right!

For the price of this lens you really can't beat it. On a 1.5x crop factor camera it makes a great short-tele lens for three-quarter length portraits. The bokeh is very nice and the f/1.8 aperture is so awesome especially if you're upgrading from slow (f/3.5 and up) zooms. On the downside, this may not be the best lens if your camera cannot auto-focus it (D40, D5000, D60?)

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is a great lens! no matter cheap or costly. it is cheap because it does not have variable zoom so it does not need to maintain f 1.8 through out the zoom. that reduces it price to $134. The aperture it opens makes a 27.7mm circle (50/1.8) which aquires ample light for your photo and bokeh it also acceptably good. However if you want more bokeh just go for 50mm f1.4 or 85mm f2.8 otherwise stick this lens it will serve you very well with great sharp pictures.

Fabulous Lens for the money.I use it for low light situations, flower shots, landscapes and the occasional portrait. The only thing approaching a negative I have about this lens is the lack of autofocus on the d40 which requires manual focus. In certain situations, this can be tedious. Even so, it is a must have and the price cannot be beat.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I bought this lens to provide a lightweight alternative to the heavy but effective Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 that I've been using on my D700 full frame digital. At its low price, there was little to lose if it didn't work out. The lens has now become my preferred lens for standard focal lengths. It weighs so little on the D700 you hardly know it's there. At all but at its most wide open apertures, the lens is razor sharp, permitting a lot latitude in low light situations. Using a prime rather than a zoom has benefits for me personally, forcing me to think more about composition, depth of field, and the like. In situations where I'd ordinarily rely on my standard zoom, I walk closer or step backward. Unless you need the extra 2/3 stop of the 50mm f/1.4 (itself an excellent lens), you get a rare Nikon bargain at a very reasonable price.

I got the 50mm about two months ago. It has added a new dimension to my photos. The more softness has been added to portraits and bokeh is easily achieved. I have a Nikon D80, so it does auto-focus. That is really nice and it works well in low light thanks to the f/1.8. Drawbacks include very little sharpness at f/1.8 or 2. and well thats about the only one. Great for the price. A must have in your bag.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

As a volunteer photographer for our local opera company, I'm challenged by theater lighting and the constant movement of the performers. A tri-pod is out of the question. My Tamron 90MM f/2.8 does a fair job but because of it's macro nature, I must at times run upstairs to the extreme back wall of the opera house to get all the singers in frame. This Nikon 50MM is not only faster - providing more useable low-light shots - but more versatile relative to my position to the stage. I'm also a huge fan of mother nature and find sunset to be the optimal time to photograph flora and fauna. This lens is perfect for that too.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is a valuable compliment for a larger 70-200mm lens. I use this lens for fast, responsive, day-to-day photographic activity.

This lens does not zoom, but you can get very close to your subject, unlike larger lenses.

The short depth of field capability on this lens is incredible.

The best quality of this lens is it's ability to capture sharp images in low light situations. the f/1.8 is very fast and responsive.

Overall it is hard to beat the quality of this lens for it's price. The Warranty was the icing on the cake. I had no reason not to buy.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This 50mm 1.8f is cheap, and is one of the sharpest lens out for Nikon. On an autofocus body, the focus is quick. This will not autofocus on a lower end body like the D40. The large aperture allows use in lower light situations without raising ISO sensitivity or lowering shutter speed. The aperture also also allows a very deep depth of field and makes fantastic bokeh.

If you are starting out, make sure this is your first lens purchase.

The lens is simply the king at it's price range. The lens could be used in most area of photography, landscape, fashion, or product shots.

The lens exhibit significant internal glare when at certain angle to bright objects with aperture of f2.4 or lower. The lens is sharpest inbetween f8~f11.

The plastic lens barrel shifts around when the camera is been picked up from the lens.

The lens is very lightweight.

Good things come in small packages. I love this little lense. It gathers a lot of light for indoor shots without a flash and is very sharp. But a word of caution for you newbies. This lens does not have a built in autofocus motor. The D40 and D60 do not have a built in motor and therefore this lens does not support autofocus when used on those bodies. "AF" lenses do not have an autofocus motor "AF-S" lenses do have a built in autofocus motor and will autofocus on the D40 and D40.

I wish that I had done a little more research before asking for this as my only Christmas gift. Don't get me wrong, the lens itself is amazing. Focus, speed and everything included it would be a wonderful addition to my set-up.

Just one minor issue... it doesn't auto focus with my D40x. Apparently this is widely known in camera shops. I was a bit shocked it wasn't mentioned in the notes for the product. The white balance is also not compatible. (I tried to both measuring the white balance, which it will not do, and changing all the settings manually. Shoots outdoor light well, not so much with my indoor lighting.)

All my friends told me to get this lens. If it focused I would love it.

Using it on a D80, it's lightweight and focus fast. Sharp from f1.8, VERY sharp from f2.8. Using it for some night urban photography, close action and some portraits. It's not the most rugged design but feeling is quite good for a plastic lens and it should be durable considering its small size and weight. If you think that you would like this lens, just buy it and you'll be satisfied! The overall quality is awesome for the price.

I took this lense on my most recent vacation. It Focuses super fast and is incredibly sharp. Great in low light. I think it would be an awesome street photography lense if I shot with an FX Sensor'd camera, however, I shoot a D80 and find considering the 1.5x crop factor, it's a little to telephoto for some shots.

It was pretty tight the first couple times coupling it up to my camera body but it feels good now.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I use this as my walk-around lens instead of the 18-55mm kit lens that came with the D40. I'm so happy with this lens, I've never looked back.

This lens gives great flexibility for shooting with available light and will prove itself most useful when one finds oneself in situations where using flash is discouraged or detrimental to the photo. I make the most use of it shooting photos of my baby indoors since I don't want to shock his eyes with flash. I must say that I'm very very happy with the results. It renders very nice ambient light; colors are great; and when shooting wide-open, bokeh is superb!

The only down-side for me is that, since I am a D40 user, I can only manual focus with the lens. There's a slight learning curve for it since you have to train your eye to notice that "focus dot" on the bottom left of the viewfinder in order to ensure a sharp focus. Manual focusing becomes much easier though (and faster) after a day or two of using the lens.

Bottomline: It's a great prime lens. Couple that with a great price - the decision to acquire it becomes a no-brainer. Despite the inconvenience of having to manually focus for my D40, I have no regrets in getting this lens and am very happy with the photos I get from it. Like I said in the first paragraph, I haven't looked back to that 18-55mm kit lens ever since I got this one.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I just got this lens yesterday, and I have to say that I love it so far. The DOF and great speed of this lens is awesome. If I bump up my ISO to 800 I can hand hold shots indoors that I never could before and still have acceptable noise levels!

However, I'm using a D40x, and unfortunately this lens won't autofocus on it. Full time manual focus is difficult from f/2.8 down, especially if the subject is farther from the lens or if it's bad lighting.

I still love this lens though and I can't wait to put it through its paces.

Bottom line: can't be beat for the price :D

This is the lens that comes from Nikon with least distortion. I shoot a lot of architecture while I was travelling, and I hate the straight lines to become curves on the picture. But the problem with my D200 is this lens turned out to be a 75mm focal length, and that pushes me back far away from the object. And sometime you'll think that the street is just not wide enough.

Works well as an all around lens for film/FX. Can be used as a good portrait lens on DX.
You cant go wrong with a sharp piece of glass that costs less than a camera bag. Even if you don't use it very often, for the price, its worth having one in your bag.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I only have two lens for my camera and this is the one I use the most at gigs as I am up the front and don't want to annoy people with the flash. I estimate I have taken over 20,000 shots with it and it is still going strong. After using it so much I can change it over almost automatically and am not that fussed with getting another lens when I am happy with this one.

I recieved this lense 6 days ago and it is still attached to my camera. I purchased this to take photos using just natural light without flash and it has done just that. I've already took a few amazing shots that with any of my other 3 lenses would have been horrible and needed a flash. Here's an example of a closeup that turned out better than with my macro zoom lense.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

You can't beat this for the price. Very fast. Clear. I was planning on upgrading to the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 someday but I'm so happy with 1.8 so far that I'm wondering if I should just put that money towards something else.

I really like shooting indoors without any flash and this has really opened up a whole world of shots I would have otherwise missed. I'm very happy with this lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I've had this lens for about 10 months, and I'm always pleasantly surprised at how well it performs. It is incredibly lightweight, almost to the point of feeling cheap, but its actually well-built. It has excellent optics, and works very well as a general use lens, and really shines in portraiture. It focuses quickly on the D70, maybe a little noisy, but the sharpness, color, and clarity are outstanding. Completely worth the investment.

Hey, it's a 50 mm lens. With the 1.5 crop factor, and the abilty to do cropping later with a 6 MP image, it makes a nice medium long F1.8 lens. And it's cheap.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I use this lens often. The 50mm on a digital SLR brings you in close for great portraits. Also good for shooting details of larger objects for those "abstract" shots. Very sharp, light, quick focusing lens. At 1.8 the bokah is good and you can shoot much better in low-light conditions, as well as isolate your subject.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I have used this extensively for getting inside candid portraits of cats and kids. It works wonderfully, I bought it because I wanted any lens on sparse budget and this was the cheapest out there, but it turned out to be a must-have.
Like it much better than the kit 18-70.
