Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with HB-26 Hood - Black Finish - Gray Market:

You'll definitely hear it when it's focusing, and the auto focus doesn't too much care for low light levels. But the image quality is good, and the lens feels fairly sturdy. It's super sharp at 150-200mm and pretty good all the way out at 300mm... Totally worth it for the price.

My husband purchased this lens for me at Christmas. The camera I have (Nikon D60) does not have the ability to auto focus this lens. So, I had to send it back. [...] I did purchase the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200 f/4-5.6G IF-EDI am thrilled with this lens. My only comment to new users of SLR is to be sure you know your camera and which lens will work the way you want it to. [...]

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with HB-26 Hood - Black Finish - Gray Market:

This lens will scratch your itch if you just want to get longer telephoto reach than your 18-105 VR-G kit lens with the Nikon D90, and for a really low price. The D90's AF motor handles this lens just fine. It definitely is a lot softer lens than the tack-sharp G kit lens, especially beyond 200mm. You can hand-hold it and still get some nice shots at the far end of the range even though it is not a VR lens. However, a tripod or monopod will give you better stability for action shots. This is an outside-use lens, not for indoors unless you have tons of light and serious flash and high ISO. I would also recommend using a polarizing filter outside, it helps the color saturation but not the sharpness. Overall, I would say this lens is worth the low price if you can trade off the tack sharpness of the five hundred dollar VR-G lens.

I love doing Portraiture, this lens made my portrait shot amazing! Even though this is the cheapest long-range telephoto lens cost around 140 US$, you are still gonna get a great picture by properly using it! If you don't have enough budget for Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR which is cost around 530 US$; Just buy this one, or save for a much better lens like a VR lens.

I wanted a cheap zoom I wouldn't have to worry about on hikes. I had tried other brand lenses on my D80 and you'd have to wait all day for them to focus. For a cheap lens it is very quick and does the job I bought it for. I am very happy and I didn't need to spend almost 600 to get the same zoom. If you like the outdoors this is the perfect lens.

I was amazed with this lense. I expected, because of the low price, it would be mediocre, but some of the BEST pictures I've ever taken are with this lense. The clarity is exceitional, and better then the 28-200 lense I've been using. I am so enthusiastic about my pictures I've been able to take with this lense.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with HB-26 Hood - Black Finish - Gray Market:

I really like this lens. I am used to professional grade lens that are minimum F2.8. However, I needed a zoom for taking a few personal shots at an airshow. With my D300, you could not tell this was not a pro-grade lens. It was fast and with daylight, the shots came crisp and clean. I am sure the Nikon 70-200 2.8 would have made better shots, but at 8x10, I doubt you would be able to see much of a difference under my shooting conditions. If you are in the business at shooting zoom, then consider the more expensive lens as the lens construction is not the same as a pro lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with HB-26 Hood - Black Finish - Gray Market:

I bought the import version of this lens seeking to get a little more range for sporting events over my 18-200mm DX VR lens on my D80.

This lens may be the deal of all Nikkor lenses along with the 50mm 1.8! It is lightweight and not nearly as cheaply made as the price might suggest.

An argument against this lens is that that it's not fast enough for without VR and its f5.6 maximum aperature to work effectively at 300mm. I was able to handle these limitations by simply increasing the ISO on my D80 to use a faster shutter speed.

As others have noted, the lens gets somewhat soft at 300mm, but it's really not that bad.

This is a very light and crisp lens. It replaced a Tamron that was slower to focus, heavier and softer. This Nikon has no VR and its not heavy like a pro lens, but its also very inexpensive and consistently produces crisp images -- perfect for Little League baseball games and alligators in the middle of the lake!

As long is the sun is shining, this lens is an excellent long range sport photography lens. If you are used to 35MM film lens, remember, this lens is equivalent to 450mm on most Nikons. As a side note, be careful when Adorama suggests a filter with your purchase. I wrongly assumed that the were suggesting the correct U/V filter size and they sent me the wrong one.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with HB-26 Hood - Black Finish - Gray Market:

I wanted a telephoto zoom just for fun, cheap since as I mostly do portraits and landscapes. I use this to mess around and play with telephoto. Sharpness is decent, daylight focusing is so-so, but forget about low light focus. Of course there are better lenses out there, but for the price, it's hard to beat.

This is a great lens for the price. At less than [$ for Nikon its hard to go wrong. It is hard to hold steady at longer focal length. I took it on recent cruise to St Thomas and the shots I got of my kids in the water from the beach were great.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with HB-26 Hood - Black Finish - Gray Market:

It's funny how some people claim that this lens doesn't feel like old Nikons, etc. I bought this as a disposable, for everyday use spare lens and let me tell you; even if it feels plastic or not like an old lens, it can take a beating. I've taken it traveling, use it where I wouldn't take an expensive lens (like poor neighborhoods, beach, etc.) and still it does give really good quality without the worries of losing an expensive lens or been mugged for carrying a super expensive piece of hardware on you.I hear others complaining about losing sharpness at 300mm and slow speeds. Hello, it's a tele, it should be used with higher speeds. Don't blame it for not having proper support. If you’re shooting with low light pay $1600 for an f2.8 with VR. Remember, with this 70-300G you’re just barely paying around a $[...]. That’s cheap for a brand name lens.Bottom line, this is a great product for the price. I just don’t get any better than this. Best of all, you get really good quality and if it gets banged, stolen, etc. No big deal, it's inexpensive. If you're super concerned about vibration or slow speeds, then expend 4 times more for the VR version or 10 times more for a bright f2.8 with VR.

Nice starter tele for the budget minded. I only need a long lens once in a while and I've been very happy with this as long as it's stopped down to F8. Good sharpness for such an inexpensive lens. Auto-focus speed while not blindingly fast is acceptable.

Surprised awe struck by nikon's lack of interest and feduciary responsibility. Buy the camera wheres' the len. Took me 36yrs to get a nikon. After the military, the family, kids education and finally a digital I could afford I end up with a 70-300 and a Tokina 12-24.Unbeatable lens for the price but still waitin (one year) Will probably go for 105vr a real lens I can get here.

This is an excellent lens. Given its price tag, I do not hesitate to take it with me everywhere I go. Therefore, it is with me all the time.

Its image quality is very good for usual static subjects under good lighting conditions. Don't expect it to track focus of a seagull in late sunset though...

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with HB-26 Hood - Black Finish - Gray Market:

It's sharp enough when stopped down to produce publishable results -- I've even used it in a pinch to photograph for a worldwide news agency. Not recommended, but it worked!

AF is not a whiz and build quality is on the lower end for a Nikkor, but overall, it's a useful lens to keep handy. Weighs nothing, fits into any bag or even the back pocket of your pants, and will get you to 300mm cheap.

On bigger bodies (even a D100/D200) it's too light to balance the camera properly. But for casual shooting and travel with a D70 or a D50-class camera, or a smaller film SLR, its price/quality ratio is truly outstanding. Keep in mind: it's not an ideal lens for sports shooting. Just not fast enough.

I was pleasantly surprised at the performance of this lens. I use a 70-200 most of the time. The 200 isn't long enough for most bird shots and other animals in the wild. This lens for its cheap price takes a great picture.

It is an excellent compliment to my Nikkor18-70 lens. I still have slight doubts about the robusness of the construction compared to my old 'indestructible' Nikkors, but I have to be honest my doubts are completely unfounded. A Nikon D70 plus 18-70 and 70-300 lens seems to me the perfect package, which I now have.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with HB-26 Hood - Black Finish - Gray Market:

I've had this lens for a handfull of months now. I bought it to supplement the 18-55 kit lens that came with the D50. The primary consideration for me was the mm/price ratio.

As far as zooms go, it has a slow f-stop and requires a good chunk of light. It works fantastically outdoors on lightly overcast or brighter days. Focus is slow and hit-or-miss in imperfect lighting.

I get some noticable purple fringing on occasional shots. It's not commonplace, and can be repaired in software if the shot HAS to be salvaged.

The image begins to go soft once you get close to 300mm. I haven't seen any distortion worth mentioning.

Camera shake is an issue. The slow f-stop can results in some low shutter speeds. At 300mm, you're at 5.6 wide open. Any movement is apparent in the photo. Nikon just released the VR version of this lens. Maybe this holiday season I'll have a gift for myself :)

I've found this to be a great lens for me, a beginner. It's an excellent companion to the wide-angle zoom that came with my camera.
