what a lens! the 400 mm setting is why you buy this baby. take a look at this picture - you can't do this with a $350 kit lens.

Using the D200 I was about to sell both lens and camera due to slow focussing while taking bird pictures. On my new D700 the lens is very responsive and it became my favorite wildlife lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
Unbelievably sharp! I work out so the weight does not bother me. The only con I could think of is that you have to be at least 8 feet away from your subject to focus, but I knew this before I bought the lens. It does take up some room in your camera bag, I had to upgrade from the Mary Farace to the Joe Farace bag. Plenty of room now for all of my lenses. 95% of the time focus is lightening fast without any searching.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
This lens is a trade-up from a Sigma 135-400mm Zoom. Although it is a little heavy and the focus is slow I am pleased with the image quality. The weight and slow focus is easily compensated for by it's accuracy and sharpness. I haven't had the lens long enough to put it through any real tasks but I think I'm going to enjoy having it take its place among a contingency of well appreciated lenses and other preferred equipment.
Because of the weight and slow focus I don't feel confident that I would be able to use it for action or sports photography. I think for wildlife I might be limited by the amount of available light for the same reasons although I think it will do a great job with remote compositions and landscape photography probably using a tripod or monopod.
The A-M Mode Switch Ring I found is a little too close to the manual focus and zoom rings. I found myself out of AF not understanding why until further inspection. This may be a non-issue as I become more intimate with the lens and it's operations.
With the aperture wide open it does provide for a nice bokeh. Oh and did I forget to mention... No lens creep. That's a double plus in my book...

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
This is one of the sharpest long Nikkor lenses I have ever owned. Good sharp focus thru entire range from 80 - 400 mm which is very unusual. It's a bit heavy, but with a grip or tripod, it's manageable for sure. Super strong construction. I don't know if it is bullet proof, but it's a far cry from the plastic kit lenses offered by Nikon. I have bird and other wildlife photos that are outstanding and all hand held. The VR - even version one - is really super. I highly recommend this for any wildlife photographer or for sports taken in the bleachers. Just do a little weight lifting before you buy it.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
The pros and cons of this lens are well documented. I was somewhat hesitant to purchase due to the reviews that talked about slow focusing speeds. My own experience is that the lens is pretty darn quick to focus with my D300. It occasionally does sound a bit industrial during focusing as it is not an AF-S lens. Give it a good target and it pulls it in. Lightweight compared to my 80-200 2.8 For wildlife photography at the enthusiast price range it's probably the best lens in the Nikon lineup.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
I get a lot of use out of this lens. The large zoom range and the clear images it yields make it one of my favorites. I use it mainly with a Nikon D3 or D300. I get excellent color out of the D3 and this lens combination. I've used it on a full manual Nikon FM2 35mm film camera, a D40, D90, D300, D700 and D3 all with excellent results. I appreciate the compact form factor. The VR works well and lets you use this lens handheld at 400mm. As shaky as I am I use a tripod for extended telphoto sessions. It's well worth the cost. If I had to choose between only a few lenses, this would be one of them.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
The 80-400mm VR has been around a while now and is probably due a refresh, but the 4-year old copy I use is still going strong.
The lens is surprisingly compact with the rather large lens hood reversed, it fits in a space every bit as short as the 80-200/2.8 ED and maybe slightly more narrow.
Two notable weaknesses with this lens, however: #1, the VR is an old school version and it seems to jiggle instead of float like the new VR systems. It actually sometimes makes images MORE blurry than they would have been even in broad daylight. Weakness #2, the lens is DARK. Unless shooting outside, its borderline useless inside without a monopod - and that's only if the subject stays pretty still. Of course, it is a bit much to expect it to perform like a 400/4 prime.
It does track fast for sports. I've never had a problem on a football field, but I decided to use it once with ceiling-mounted strobes in a basketball arena and it had trouble keeping up... but that's likely because it is a dark lens and the camera couldn't autofocus fast enough.
Zoom reach is a bit long, but not too bad considering the ground this thing covers.
This was the first 400mm zoom I ever used and after I got used to its quirks, it has been a really great workhorse of a lens ever since.
I easily recommend it but just barely. If Nikon released an upgrade, enhanced the VR fuction, and maybe made it have a constant aperture - even at f/4 - this would get my perfect score. As it is, it needs a refresh.

In the early spring and into the summer, I spend most of my spare time working on a raptor nesting program. I look for the nests of various birds of prey, (hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls) gps their positions and photograph the adult and young. To better get a good image of these beautiful birds I bought the Nikon 80-400mm lens. I haven't been disappointed. I get good sharp hand held photos, thanks to the VR capability. It is a little slow on the focus but nothing to stop me from getting some great shots of bird sitting and in flight.

I too have had trouble focusing with it on my D80. It would frequently cycle for the airshow pics; I missed several shots as a result ;( Tips from others may help eliminate this issue. It's not too heavy, I shoot mainly w/out a tripod. The beach and ferry photos turned out quite well. Buy yourself a bigger case, I got a new Tamrac #5273; it's a tight fit w/ the D80, NK80-400 and NK18-135 lenses. The old case is now used to store the 2 flashes.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
I rented this lens for a bicycle race recently. I really wanted to rent a 70-200mm, but those were all booked so this was the back up lens. This lens did a great job of getting real sharp on slow moving or stationary objects, however it had a hard time focusing on the racers. I enjoyed the reach of the lens - 400 mm is great for nature or details on buildings and such. While the lens is not fast on the focusing or in regards to f-stop, it was able to get some good sharp photos.
I found the auto focus would frequently search a cycle before locking on, but if you prepared prior to the action, it was not impossible to get a good shot. All and all, a good lens for shooting nature, architecture, or other more stationary subjects.
I can't say enough about renting lens prior to buying them. If you can do that, it sure helps you decide what you like and what you don't.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
This lens at a 1.5 factor gives you a wonderful 120-600mm range which works well for most wildlife photography without spending gobs of money on fixed focal length lenses. It would be nice if it was a little faster. Have not noticed any ghosting but still recommend use of multi-coated filters. I also like the VR system on this lens, two stages to choose from. Like any lens it takes getting used to. Higher ISO's can make this lens shine.

For a zoom lens that you can carry the weight and still have a versatile lens this is about your only real Nikon choice The VR works really well for the first generation. I use the 18-200 kit lens with my D200 for the scenics. Slow to focus in low light at 400mm. Usually have to go to manual.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
The VR is quite effective although this is not an "action photo " or "spots" lens . When panning from a tripod , monopod or shooting from a vehicle -- IT WORKS. The lense requires reasonably good light , and it is heavy - but that "goes with the territory " with any f4 long lens.

When I first got the lens- I liked it- But, after using it more I love it. I was actually able to get shots of my daughter on stage in a musical & wildlife shots look like they were a foot away instead of 30ft. Now - when you want to get a pic that is close to you & you cant back up- well you miss the shot- but that is what my 18-200mm is awesome for.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
I have used many budget AF tele-zooms, Tamrons, Sigma’s IF, etc. this one is much faster and more accurate, especially if you use the AF-limit switch. It always focuses right on target. Knowing it is not an AFS, I have not idea why people are complaining about the AF speed. The only drawback is the tripod mount, there is no 0’ and 90’ stops and to remove it takes time. Don’t be afraid of what people said, it is a great lens. Low distortion and very sharp. Just get it!

The first thing I did was accidently drop this lense mounted on the D300 on the concrete - neigher was damaged - but I don't recommend doing it. Fun lens for children sports, zoo shoots and wildlife - easy to frame the shot and really good focus. It wasn't cheap, but it really is fun to shoot with.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
I have had this lens for 4 months. We live on the Mississippi River and I have wanted to photograph the many eagles in the winter and an upcoming Alaska voyage. For eagles in daylight with D300 it focuses rapidly and accurately, but a much better job with VR off, not in the panning mode. I could easily obtain sharp focus handheld. No loss of speed at 15 degrees F. For a less than $3000 price, about as good as I can get for a 400mm lens.

I understand what the fuss is about, but it's because those people have unrealistic expectations. You cannot beat the money value for the versatility of this long telephoto. Keep in mind, it's best used outdoors or with good lighting. Not having AF-S means nothing, who cares. However the sometimes shifty focusing is the only thing I would complain about, ut it's understandable with such a long zoom and there's ways around that. Use the limit switch and use single point focus zone, easy enough? I just shot with this lens on the Beach during Spring Break. I have gotten over 500 AMAZING high quality pictures with no problem. The reach of the zoom was awesome on my D80, and with 10.1MP, you can crop 50% and still get great print quality at 5x7. I shot moving subjects, still subjects, portraits and candids from 7 feet to over 100 yards. ALL GOOD! I plan to take this lens to a Formula 1 race next because I now trust it so much.

Whoever said this lens has a learning curve wasn't kidding. [...] I had a real problem getting sharp images, even on a tripod, with a cable release using mirror lockup. [...] take off the tripod collar, and use it hand held. The VR is OK (this was Nikon's first VR lens and it's not AFS, it AF). I have the best luck shooting small birds at 20-50 feet and have gotten some very nice images. Oh, also, I get the best shots when I stop it down to f8 or f11. If I had it to do over again, I'd rent this one and the 300mm f4 and then make a decision for one or none and wait till I could get a 400mm Nikkor. Hope that helps someone.

This is my primary lens for wildlife photography. Please understand that the lens has a learning curve. This makes it more fun to use. Lesson one- on a Nikon D80 don't use AUTO mode with this lens or half your shots will be out of focus. Instead use P mode. Then almost all your photos will be in focus.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
Before buying, I had mixed feelings since the reviews varied from 5 star to 1 star. After all, it was what I hoped for. You can get sharp pictures out of this lens as long as you follow the rules. Specifically, shoot at a shutter speed of 1/focal length or faster, i.e. 1/500 sec. at 400 mm. With VR on, count only on a 1 stop gain and leave the rest as a safety if at all possible. And finally, my monopod mounted shots with VR on turned out fantastic.
The focusing is loud and slow compared to my other 18-200 mm Nikkor but very acceptable for non action photography. When the focus limit switch is engaged focusing is actually quite decent. At the longer focal lengths, the limited depth of field makes for easy manual focusing too.
One thing that keeps confusing me is that the zoom and focusing rings are swapped compared to my 18-200 mm zoom.
I was also a little suprised with the lens size - the online pictures without a reference don't give the right idea. It definitely does not fit in my back pack.

Purchased this one for my wife for travel based on my experiance with the lens. Overall great product; VR does what they say it will. Very versatile; ok with extensions. Old style TC will fit, but goes manual and can be difficult to get good results. I use for intermediate nature work, flight, general when I want to avoid the weight of the bigger guns, i.e. 200-400. VR off for tripod use a must.

This is another fantastic lens by Nikon. There is so many uses, with some limations, as with all lens. There is a small learning level, as with most lens. I take this lens with me when ever I go out, carring it in it's own case. I also have a mono pod with me for more difficult shots, VR works great. Can be used hand-held, but really needs a tripod or support. Mounting ring has markers for horizontal/vertical rotation, but is visual only - no indent. Auto focus works well, but is slow and a little noisy. Auto Focus has a range limiter switch, though, for faster focus.Images seem sharp to me, but then, I've never used $6000 lenses. I think it is a good lens for the money.

I'm overall very pleased with this lens...if I wasn't, I would have returned it! The auto focus is better than I anticipated. I heard from others it was dreadfully slow. But I feel it does fairy well when used with my d200. My biggest complaint about the lens is when you zoom from one extreme to the other a lot of twist is needed causing the need to twist some, and then release your hand and re-grip the lens in a comfortable position. Most of the time I have a 1.4 TC attached to it (Kenko pro 300 DG)
for more reach. The VR really makes a huge differance with freehand full telephoto shots being sharp most of the time.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
I've really enjoyed this lens. For what it can do, it is reasonably priced and reasonably small and portable. It is a bit slow to focus and I'd love to have wider apertures available, but I also realize that it would cost twice as much and be twice as heavy if it were an f/2.8. The VR is fantastic and I can get good shots at 400mm handheld even with relatively long exposures. I haven't had a chance to play with the new 70-300 VR, but I imagine that it will put a lot of pressure on this lens at half the price and much smaller and lighter (plus AFS).

I am very satisfied with this lens. It;s build quality and results are very good. This lens is easy to use, and takes very good images. Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens (Vibration Reduction) with Hood & Soft Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:
Expensive, big and heavy. Ssllooww autofocus. Sharpness is pretty good. Bokeh is not bad - far better than the 18-200VR which, for me, has very harsh bokeh. I use this lens for wildlife and like it. I don't think this is the best tool for fast moving objects although I did get some great surfing shots last month.

Great for daylight, slow moving subjectrs. NOT a lowlight lens. NOT a sporting lens. Very good images when properly used.

I have had good luck with this lens. Mostly I use it for wildlife captures and landscapes/outdoor images and a little sports photography. Lens seems to perform well- not much vignetting or optical distortion.
Biggest complaint is that the AF feature will use up your battery- it is a lot of glass to be moving around, so always carry an extra battery.
As with any telephoto lens, I always want it to be one stop faster and 100mm longer. It does make a nice companion to my 80-200 f2.0 zoom.

The lens is very fast, focus is precisely, and the vibration reduction is ideal.

I have used this lens for almost 5 years and found it well worth the cost. I look froward to Nikon's next generation of VR technology.

This lense replaces several of my fixed lenses and zooms. I hate to travel with a big bag. This lense and a wide angle zoom is all I need. I shoot my best pictures with this lense. It's expensive but well worth the price.
