Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - Gray Market:

When you want to isolate someone or something from its environment and it or they are far enough away that a 50 1.4 would not be better, this is a great lens and a super price. It is a little harder to get the focus right than the current generation lenses and there is no VR so you need to keep the shutter speed up but when you observe these rules you can get a really nice shot.

I love this lens. I use it for engagement and wedding photos, but I'm often embarrassed by the heavy donut bokeh it produces. Nonetheless it is the best 85mm for the price I paid: [$]. Worth the money... and most clients wont know what bokeh is anyways ;-)

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - Gray Market:

I mostly use this for candid portraits, and I have been extremely impressed with the output of this lens. The bokeh is quite good, and f/1.8 is fast enough for most low-light situations--I have taken some beautiful pictures at concerts, skating rinks, and even just on the street. The only downside is learning the depth of field. It can be very narrow, depending on the settings, making group portraits difficult. Other than that, this lens is highly recommended.

This is my second 85mm F1.8. The first one was stolen 3 months ago. My experience with this lens has been excellent. After I bought the Nikon D700 I needed a lens for portraits. I had no doubts that it was the lens. Perhaps the 85mm F1.4 but it was too expensive.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - Gray Market:

I love taking candid shots---portraits of people at parties and social events ie capturing their essence. This is my best lens for that purpose. I cannot justify purchase of the 70-200mm VR f/2.8 Nikon at this time and perhaps never, if this lens continues to deliver bright, sharp shots so consistently.

I've longed for the 85mm/1.4 but @ 3x the price thought I'd be settling but boy was I wonderfully wrong. Incredible color, clarity, and tack sharp from 1.8 - 8f. This one is a keeper and personal necessity for the wedding/portrait photographer.

Very pleased with this lens thus far! Quality build & construction with beautiful output! After purchasing I learned that my brother (a semi-professional photographer) has had this same Nikkor lens for a couple of years and he thinks it is terrific as well. An excellent lens at a fair price from Adorama!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - Gray Market:

I really like this lens, It's great because I found that even on digital, the 50mm was a little short when I wanted to get a little tighter crop. Anyway I'm sure everything about this lens has already been said but I will add that it took me some time to get used to it.
Because the DOF is so small, it's tricky to get the focus spot on wide open. Especially with wiggly children! hehe
Stopping down of course makes this lens really sharp and gives you a buffer.....
Also, those of you wanting to use it for low light work, remember that you still need fairly fast shutter speeds to prevent blur because of the lenses lenght. I love this lens!!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - Gray Market:

This is a classic lens, for not a great deal of money that really performs. Portraits are very sharp and using f/1.8 enables the center of focus to rest on the eyes, with a nice softening effect elsewhere. Low light, or ambient light portraits are also a major plus. Even as a small telephoto used indoors, the fast aperture enables high shutter speeds, even at lower ISO settings.

Easy choice - if you have a grand burning a hole in your pocket, get the 1.4. Otherwise, get this lens and never look back. It is my main lens for concert photography and basketball. If the light is really bad, you will wish you had the 1.4 but otherwise, this thing rocks. I use it for portraits as well but there are lots of lenses that will do for that. Being in the photog pit at a concert with no flash allowed and only two songs to get your shots - this is THE lens. Buy one - you won't regret it.

Fast, sharp, light weight
By Girl behind the lensVerified Reviewer from Gainesville, FL on 11/29/2006
Pros:
Clear Glass, Easily Mounted, Lightweight, Small easy to pack
Best Uses:
Fun, Photojournalism, Portraits, Travel

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - Gray Market:

I love this lens. I've used it on a film SLR and now use it on my digital Nikon D200. It doesn't disappoint. The autofocus is instant, and very clear. Images show fine detail. The lens is fast, so shutter speed tends to be as well, giving more consecutive frames per second. I take indoor shots with this lens in existing light and have never had to use fill in or flash. It's so lightweight and so fast that I can hand hold shots at 1/15th with no blur. For the price, this lens can't be beat. I use it for just about anything, but it's best for portraits, getting in close, and low light situations. If you're into wedding or group shots, or walking around NYC, this lens won't do it. You'll need a wide angle. Otherwise, a fabulous, high quality lens.
