I bought the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 last weekend and was highly disappointed. The motor is loud to the point of distraction when you're in a quiet room. The AF works SOME of the time, and the viewfinder "skips". (Picture banging your fist on an old TV set and the picture jumps.) [...] try out the Sigma 17-50 and the 24-70. Both of those are sharp, sharp, sharp! Quiet motor as well. I exchanged the Tammy for the Sigma 24-70.

I really wanted to like this lens because of the dramatic cost savings from the Nikkor version. After shooting several hundred photos over two weeks in various environments, I examined the photos, tweaked my camera settings, and then gave up. My photos just weren't as sharp and crisp as when I used my other lenses. I was intending to use it for 90% of my photos (indoors, little kids, low light) but the image quality wasn't there. I returned it.

excellent shapness and good VC performance. It is a great bargain at the price. So far I have used it for landscape and museum pictures. It's imaging is a definite improvement on its non-VC predecessor, which I also owned.

Perhaps others haven't been so happy with theirs because the output from Tamron isn't that consistent; but for once I have rolled the dice and won big time. This lens is incredibly sharp, even wide open. Focus isn't as fast as my pro lenses but it's still very good. The vibration reduction is insanely good, yes it's a bit loud compared to Nikon's VR system, but still...clear shots hand held with the shutter open as long as half a second...unbelievable!
I no longer miss my Nikon 17-55. Between the two I prefer this one much much better...I absolutely love it!

I so wanted to like this lens. I wanted a f2.8, medium range, lightweight zoom, but on my copy of the Tamron less than 10% of the 200 or so test shots were in focus and only barely so. No f-stop selection on this lens could get as sharp as the Nikon 18-55mm non-VR kit lens which cost 1/4 of the price. Wide open, the lens was useless.I probably got a lemon since I've seen good reviews here and elsewhere. Make sure you test the lens as soon as you receive it. For me, once bitten, twice shy -- gonna stick with Nikon glass.

This lens came out in September and I bought mine in October. It is a bit heavy. I use it as a replacement for the kit lens that came with my Nikon D70s and also on my D80. It works to perfection. Zoom is stiff but totaly usable. I took over 600 pix in the last month with this lens and they are very shart and true to color. The lens actually works better on the D70s when using fill flash because the D70s will sync the flash up to 1/500 shutter speed. Great lens - Thanks TAMRON.

Bought this lens verses the non VC version to try out the VC in low light conditions, I have shot 2 weddings in the last month where I was dealing with low light and a no flash requirement, lens worked like a charm, pictures looked great (note: used this on the second wedding 9/26 after receiving it on 9/23, you could easily see the difference in the photos, all the lenses I use are F2.8 or better and this is my second non-Nikkor lense, I plan on using it again and will be taking a closer look at Tamron products
