Comments about Tamron Tamron 18 - 250mm f/3.5-f/6.3 XR DI-II LD Aspherical (IF) AF Zoom Lens with Macro, for Pentax Digital SLR Cameras - U. S. A. Warranty:
I've only had this lens a little while. It has the best zoom range on the market (18-250mm, equivalent to about 27-385 on a 35mm camera). It's also small and light for such a large zoom. It seems to be pretty sharp, but I've never owned a professional quality lens to compare it to. The only cons are 1) that the maximum aperture is 3.5-6.3. Now, 3.5 isn't bad, but 6.3 is. If you have a polarizer or other light-reducing filter, you may have too little light to shoot with. I think, however, that it's a worthwhile tradeoff for the zoom range. I like not having to switch lenses. Con 2)It focuses slowly if you're trying to catch moving wildlife (such as a flying bird or insect). All in all, I'm very happy with the lens. I recommended the Sony-mount version of this lens to my brother-in-law, and he's happy with it, too.

I used this lens on my Pentax K10D for 3 weeks in the Baltic and found it to be an excelent lens for travel. No need to pack several lenses. I purchased a 1.4 tele extender for it for my upcoming trip to Yucatan. That should cover all the bases.
