Outdoor use works to keep the sun off lense. Offers protection for lense
The EF-S 17-85mm is not an L lens so it does not include the hood when you purchase the lens. There are generic alternatives to the original Canon hood though.
I'm very pleased with this Lens Hood

It is really a mute point... Would have paid extra for it with the lens, did pay extra for it separately. However, there is something galling about the hood not being included with the lens.
This is a simple item that works as intended. It does not require a prolonged review.
If you have a EF 17-85 by Canon lens and shoot outdoors then a must have is the canon lens hood. Unless lens flare is what you are after there is no quicker alternative to shooting outdoors for portraits, sporting events, and landscapes. The lens hood is difficult to maneuver around for manual focus and zoom when screwed onto the lens in the "wait for later" position. For fast action shots that might slow you down. Otherwise it is a must have.
Using this lens hood definitely has made a difference in glare and occasional "spottiness" that sometimes appeared in my pictures. The petaled design makes it lightweight and easy to use. I know of others who had bought generic lens hoods, who have not been nearly as satisfied as I. I would purchase the same item again.
The product is easy to use, but makes the camera somewhat more bulky.
