With a growing inventory of photo lenses, batteries, chargers, and so on, I needed a way to protect and store equipment that I wasn't carrying with me. The best thing about the Domke inserts is that you can mix and match to suit your equipment. Its modular, and therefore easy to store on a shelf or in a box or bag, and when on the go, you can just pick the insert with items you need, pack it into your camera bag, and be off. I searched the internet for a while before I discovered these, and I'm so glad I did. Could be a little prettier maybe, but function scores big.
I wanted a camera bag to discreetly carry a modest amount of equipment (D80, attached zoom, flash, a couple small lenses and accessories). My problem with most camera bags, is they look too much like camera bags. I added this Domke insert to a medium-sized canvas shoulder bag (an M51 Field Engineer bag from an Army surplus store) and now carry my gear to events without drawing attention. The included dividers offer a lot of potential arrangements but I added another small divider from another bag to stack my flash on top of my 50mm. The padding is minimal but adequate if you don't make a habit of dropping your bag from heights. The foam pads can be removed for an even slimmer solution with soft sides. By removing 2 pads, I was able to place the insert in a bag only 5" wide.
